Carbon Dioxide Absorbing Concrete
Proposed by: - Aditi Mishra
Abstract: -
In order to serious climate change, deep reduction in CO₂ emission is required. CO₂ absorption is one of the key
technologies to control the global warming. Global warming is caused by sharply increased greenhouse gases
emission by human activities. In building industry, CO₂ emission mainly come from cement production.
Capturing of CO₂ from point source, from ambient air and reducing atmospheric CO₂ concentration by using
zeolites. It is done by taking zeolites as a rationale. This zeolite substitute for fine aggregate and cement will
continuously absorb CO₂ with incredible strength. The zeolites available in the form of powder as well as fine
aggregates. A mixture is formed by mixing sand and zeolite sand with zeolite powder. Another mixture is
obtained by mixing sand, zeolite powder and cement. Both are mixed using proper amount of water.

Learning Outcomes: -
• The project teaches us the role of CO₂ in global warming and in analysing the sources of carbon dioxide
emission.
• It enables us to learn the role of zeolites as CO₂ absorber.
• It also helps us to understand various testing such as compression testing, which helps us to find the
strength of the blocks

Social Benefits:
• It reduces the rate of emission of CO₂ while producing the cement in the industry.
• It has the same durability as well as performance as the ordinary Portland cement concrete.
• The addition of Zeolite improves mechanical strength of the cement and stops CO₂ emission thus,
reduces the greenhouse gas in the surrounding.

Plastic to Fuel
Proposed by: - Simran Sharma

Abstract: -
The project focuses on developing a technique which will simultaneously solve the plastic waste issue and
natural fuel source’s limitation. Plastics are hydrocarbons that are made from petroleum, and they can be
converted back to liquid fuel. The plastic wastes are shredded and then loaded into an airtight vessel in which
pyrolysis occurs. The plastic is boiled to about a temperature of 400 degree Celsius in the absence of oxygen.
The gas which leaves the reactor is separated and often reused to fuel the machine itself. The vapors coming out
are condensed and collected. The then obtained liquid is an oil, resembling crude oil in its properties. The oil
can be further distilled using a fractional distillation column, and we get petrol like fuel along with by products.

Learning Outcomes: -
1). The project teaches how the plastic waste can be converted into a valuable fuel, i.e. petrol.
2). It teaches recycling of plastic waste, without putting burden on our fossil fuels which are already quite
exhausted.

Social Benefits: -
1) The exponential rise of industrialization all over the world, requires support of fossil fuels at the back-end,
increasing their demand while the supply remains limited. Hence, the technology used here provides an
adequate alternative fuel, which can completely take up the place of naturally occurring crude oil in near future.
2) Plastic is the biggest enemy of our environment right now; this project takes up this plastic waste, and
converts it to fuel of great importance.
3) The fuel obtained has similar properties to crude oil and does not require special storage techniques.

Refining of used Lube Oil
Proposed by: - Aditya Singh Thakur

Abstract: -
Used oil-as it name implies-is any petroleum based or synthetic oil that has been used. During normal use,
impurities such as dirt, metal scrapings, water or chemicals can get mixed in with the oil or be generated in it
due to thermal degradation or oxidation. Therefore, the oil quality gradually decreases to a level that the used oil
should be replaced by new one. Disposing the use oil off in nature create an intense dangerous pollution. But by
proper recovery and refinement of it a lot of valuable product can be obtained. This article studies one of the
best methods of use oil refining and compares its product specification with those of a virgin base oil.

Learning Outcomes: -
It teaches us the concept of refining of oil by distillation etc.
It teaches us about the concept of liquid liquid extraction of lubricating oil using Nmethylpyrolidone as the
other solvent.

Social Benefits: - Preserve natural resources such as coal and crude oil.
Reduce dependence on base oil imports saving foreign exchange.

Vortex Bladeless Wind Turbine
Proposed by: - Siddharth
Abstract: -
Vortex Bladeless is a vortex induced vibration resonant wind generator. It harnesses wind energy from a
phenomenon of vorticity and Vortex Shedding. Basically, bladeless technology consists of a cylinder fixed
vertically with an elastic rod. The cylinder oscillates on a wind range, which then generates electricity through
an alternator system. In other words, it is a wind turbine which is not actually a turbine.
Vortex wind generators are more similar in features and cost-effectiveness over time to solar panels than to
regular wind turbines.

Learning Outcomes: -

Activated Charcoal from Rice Husk
Proposed by: Anchal Sharma
Abstract: -
Activated Carbon is an essential substance for many industrial activities. For instance, bleaching agent (in sugar
factory) and for water filtration. Most of the Activated Carbon for industrial activities is being imported from
other countries. However, there is no sufficient amount of production to satisfy the need in our country and the
demand for Activated Carbon in the market is high. So, to satisfy the demand the Activated Carbon is being
produced using solid waste Rice Husk. The purpose of this project is the preparation of Activated Carbon using
a suitable rice husk. The Activated Carbon produced from Pyrolysis of rice husk was chemically activated with
activating agent sodium hydroxide (NaOH). The chemically activated carbons were characterized by measuring
yield percentage and bulk densities. The activated carbon produced from rice husk at different activating
temperature of 650ºC, 700ºC and 800ºC exhibit a yield percentage of 48.2%, 47.65% and 45.95% respectively
and corresponding bulk densities were 0.2 g/ml, 0.16 g/ml and 0.117 g/ml respectively. Proximate analysis also
performed for precursor selection to choose the appropriate precursor.

Learning Outcomes: -
1.Help us to know how activated carbon is produced from the solid waste of rice husk.
2. In this project we came to know how the Proximate Analysis of rice husk determines the distribution of its
contents. It is noted that the volatile matter present in rice husk, contributes maximum to its contents.

GRAPHENE SAND FILTER
Proposed by: - Aditya kumar Patel
ABSTRACT: -
Graphene oxides are known for their affinity towards ionic components. Hence this property
could be utilized to remove the impurities present in water molecules. Moreover, Graphene
oxides are popular for their antimicrobial and dis-infective properties. Activated Carbon filters
are known to be very effective but they are relatively expensive and require costly pumps and
high-pressure systems to operate. Now there is a much simpler way by boosting the effectiveness
of commonly used low-pressure sand filters. Poor quality water containing contaminants can be
cleaned much more effectively in sand filers by simply by coating grains of sand with an oxide
of a common material called graphite - the substance used as lead in pencils.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: -
→ The project can be used to teach the concept of water purification by graphene.
→ How we can control the TDS of water by varying the length graphene sand bed.
→ Study about the anti microbial properties of graphene.

SOCIAL BENEFITS: -
→ We can use the graphene sand filter to absorb the heavy metals like mercury and lead
from the water, which is harmful for health.
→ Graphene sand filter will save us from future water crisis, as it can also purify saline
water from sea with some modification.
→ Graphene sand filter help rural people in order to get pure water. Since, we can purify
water from river up to 90-95 %.

PROCEDURE
1. Wash river sand with 10%HCl.
2. Dry the river sand in hot air oven at 100 degree centigrade for 20 minutes.
3. Mixed graphene oxide with river sand.
4. Now heat it in oven at 125 degree centigrade for 6 hours.
5. Cover with a layer of activated carbon so that graphene oxide does not get oxidized.
6. Now your graphene sand is ready for making bed of filter.
7. Now use some conical vessel of diameter about 7-8 cm and make bed of height of 3-4
cm.
8. Now pass the dirty water through this bed and measure TDS of water of using TDS
meter.

Fluidized Bed Combustion
Proposed by: - Mehak, Prakriti And Nidhi
Abstract: - A circulating fluidized bed boiler activates a mixture of particles and gas to
improve combustion reaction. FBC plants are capable of burning a variety of low-grade solid
fuels including most type of coal and woody biomass at a high combustion efficiency (10 times)
and without the necessity for expensive fuel preparation (e.g. pulverizing). FBCs are smaller than
the equivalent conventional furnace. By using this, we will also achieve low emission of NOx
and removal of SOx is also possible due to precipitation by limestone.

Learning Outcomes: -
1. This project will help us in understanding the designing of fluidized bed combustor, screw
conveyor and cyclone separator.
2. It will help us to know about the effect of adding limestone with feed on Sox production and
how we can utilize the energy of flue gases at exit stream.

Social Benefits: -
1. In pulverized coal boiler, exit temperature of the flue gases that are released to the
environment is 1500C. But by using this technology, we can reduce exit stream temperature.
2. Low production of NOx due to low temperature.
3. Low production of Sox due to capture by limestone.
4. FBC has a lower combustion temperature of 7500C whereas ordinary boiler operates above
8500C.
5. Control in pollution.

Bioremediation
Proposed by: - Nidhi Verma, Mehak Sharma and Prakriti
Abstract: - Calcium peroxide (CaO2) nanoparticles have been extensively applied in treatment
of contaminated groundwater through bioremediation or modified Fenton (MF) processes. In the
present study utilization of CaO2 in bioremediation and MF (CaO2+FeSO4) reaction is
investigated for benzene (50mg/L) removal in continuous flow sand packed columns and a
comparative discussion was implemented for its efficiency over natural bioremediation. The
technique followed for the production of nanoparticles via sol-gel technique using eggshell as a
precursor which has many advantages over other methods of production of metal oxide
nanoparticles at high temperature and pressure conditions. The size of nanoparticles were
analyzed via FTIR which shows higher concentration of production of calcium oxide
nanoparticles over size(50-198nm).The technique used for determining bioremediation of
benzene was either HPLC or UV-VIS spectroscopy which shows reduction in the amount of
benzene over time. Microbial concentration were analyzed which was to study the attached
biofilms on the sand surfaces, using scanning electron microscopy and a comparative study was
analyzed which shows MF(CaO2+FeSO4) being best for catalyzed bioremediation process.

Learning Outcomes: -
• We will be able to synthesize calcium peroxide nanoparticles(50-198nm) size at
comparatively cheaper rate and at low temperature and pressure conditions.
• The biggest problem of ground water pollution will be solved by simple bioremediation
technique which is economically safe.
• We will be able to construct a packed bed reactor of our own in working state.

Social Benefits: -
• Using egg shell precursor for calcium in production of nanoparticles was advantageous as
reducing major solid waste which has become an essential element of degradation to
environment. Households, restaurants, and bakeries are the major source of egg shells.
• Benzene is a health hazard, Benzene concentration in water should be lower then 5ppb
therefore reducing benzene concentration which had seeped through groundwater is
essential.
• Many heavy metal ions including other carcinogenic compounds like toluene, ethyl
benzene etc can be removed.
• Although this process takes time in removing toxicants but is eco-friendly and do not
disturb the balance of environment.
