There were multiple distinct causes which sowed the seeds of the war of independence in 1857. Some of which were: Political: The Mughal emporer was mistreated and disrespected. Lord Dalhouise also moved the royal family from Delhi to Qutb Shah.Persian was replaced by English as the official language and less and less jobs were being given to Indians in Civil services. Religious: The majority of the religions; Islam, Hinduism and Sikhism were under threat as Christian missionaries came to India to promote Christianity. These missionaries soon established schools. A new type of rifle was introduced with their paper catridges covered with grease, which was disliked by the Indians. Social: The British considered themselves as the superior race and assumed it was their responsibility to take slavery and superstition away from India. They instead promoted their own culture and the Indians were hence treated as the inferior race. Economic: High amount of taxes was being imposed which was impossible to pay for by the peasants and landowners. The british kept these taxes and profited off of India’s wealth. Military: The higher class in the army was usually consisted of the british while the soldiers were primarily Indians and they were payed a low amount. Rumors of Muslim and Sikh soldiers being forcefully converted to Christianity were not uncommon.
