RF BASED STATION
ANNOUNCEMENT SYSTEM
Introduction:
One of the main form of communication that has been in
use since 19th century is Radio Wave communication. Our
project demonstrates one such example where Radio Wave is
employed in a way which is helpful to us. This project is
designed and developed for helping the passengers traveling in
train, especially during night. The people who are not aware of
the station on which one should get down will find this very
helpful. Here the station name is displayed and announced
simultaneously when the station is about to reach which can
assist both literate and illiterate.

The RF technology is used in the project to communicate

between the transmitter and receiver. Each transmitter has a
unique binary code which is transmitted continuously to space
in a particular range. This signal is captured by the receiver
when it reaches in its range. So in the case of a train, the
transmitter placed in the station is detected by the receiver in
the train and the binary code is processed to give out the
station name display and audio corresponding to the binary
code in the receiver. A LCD unit is used for displaying the
station name and a speaker is used for the announcement.

Description:
Aim:
The aim of the project is to announce the station name for the
travellers travelling in the train using RF communication.

Material Required:
1. Power supply
2. RFID Reader
3. RFID Tag
4. Micro controller (Arduino UNO)
5. LCD
6. Voice alert system

Preparation:
This system has two sections, i.e., transmitter section and
the receiver section. In this case railway stations are
considered as transmitters and trains are considered as
receivers. In this exhibit we will have four stations, each station
will be assigned with an unique code. This unique code will be
transmitted by the transmitter module continuously. Once the
receiver comes within the range limit it grasps the data and
decode it accordingly and displays it on LCD. Also gives an
input to the voice alert system. Here RFID tags are placed
under the track and RFID reader interfaced with micro
controller is placed in the train. When RFID reader detects
some input, it validates and announces respective station
name.

Working method:
RF based station name intimation is based traditionally on RF
signal. RF signal at the frequency range 434 MHz is employed
for communication between transmitter unit and receiver unit
in our project. Each station is identified by a unique binary
code, for example, 001 for Chennai and 100 for Nagercoil. This
binary code is transmitted by transmitter module continuously
at a frequency range of 434 MHz within a distance of 400 foot
outdoor and 200 foot indoor. This distance can be enhanced by
using additional RF antenna. When the receiver comes within

the range of transmitter, it receives the data from the
transmitter in the form of RF signal which is further decoded to
collect the binary code and display the station name along with
the voice play back.

Power Supply:
A 9v DC power supply is used for this project.

RFID Reader
A RFID Reader is a device that uses radio-
frequency waves to wirelessly transfer data
between itself and a RFID tag/label in order
to identify, categorise and track assets.
When combined with the right RFID software, a
RFID reader can identify objects quicker, more
accurately, at a reduced overall cost, and at
various points of the object’s lifecycle

RFID Tag
An RFID tag consists of an integrated circuit and
an antenna. The tag is also composed of a
protective material that holds the pieces together and shields
them from various
environmental conditions.

Micro Controller Board

(Arduino UNO):
The Arduino Uno is an open-
source micro controller
board based on
the Microchip ATmega328P micr
o controller and developed
by Arduino.cc. The board is
equipped with sets of digital
and analog input/output (I/O)
pins that may be interfaced to various expansion boards (shields)
and other circuits. The board has 14 digital I/O pins (six capable
of PWM output), 6 analog I/O pins, and is programmable with
the Arduino IDE (Integrated Development Environment), via a type
B USB cable. It can be powered by the USB cable or by an
external 9-volt battery, though it accepts voltages between 7 and
20 volts.

LCD:
LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) screen is
an electronic display module and
find a wide range of applications. A
16x2 LCD display is very basic
module and is very commonly used
in various devices and circuits. A 16x2 LCD means it can
display 16 characters per line and there are 2 such lines.
These modules are preferred over seven segments and
other multi segment LEDs. The reasons being: LCDs are
economical; easily programmable; have no limitation of
displaying special & even custom characters (unlike in
seven segments), animations and so on.

Voice Alert
This is another output unit in the receiver.
This gives the voice alert of the station
reached based on the RF transmitter signal
received.

Advantages
1. By providing voice alert, passengers in the train can easily
know about the coming station.
2. In the nights this feature can be more useful as the
announcement wakes up the passengers.
3. Helpful for illiterates and blind people.

Disadvantages
1. This method could be slightly expensive in real time
scenarios, considering the number of compartments in the
train.
4. Live tracking is not possible.
5. Radio interference from other services is possible.

Applications
1. Can be used for Buses too.

Future Development
1. This exhibit can further developed with GSM tracking, to
know the exact location of train.
