Nearly 30,000 pigs, adding that North Sumatra has a pig population of 1.2 million, have died from African swine fever (ASF) in
Indonesia’s North Sumatra province as of Dec. 15, officials said on Wednesday. That ASF has been found in 16 areas in North
Sumatra, including the provincial capital Medan. Trade traffic (for pork and its products) are temporarily closed for the infecte
areas. East Timor, which shares an island with Indonesia’s East Nusa Tenggara province at the far eastern end of the country,
reported numerous outbreaks of ASF in September that killed 405 backyard pigs

Reports have now emerged of a successful vaccine, developed by researchers from the Agricultural Research Service based at
Plum Island, New York, after a new paper was published in the online journal, bioRxiv. The early results of the trial look promis
as all pigs in remained essentially free of clinical signs of the disease after being exposed to the complete virus.

Presiden AMI (Asosiasi Monogastrik Indonesia), Sauland Sinaga menyatakan, usaha peternakan babi di Sumut sangat
strategis. Sumut memiliki populasi ke-2 terbanyak di Indonesia dengan jumlah pemotongan sekitar 600 ribu ekor per
tahun. “Sumut menjadi pemasok babi sekitar 60 % untuk Pulau Sumatera, pemasok babi sekitar 20 % untuk DKI
Jakarta, serta pemasok sekitar 30 % protein hewani masyarakat (20 kg per kapita per tahun,” paparnya.

Selain itu, usaha peternakan babi di Sumut menghidupi sekitar 300 ribu Rumah Tangga Peternak atau setara dengan
1,5 juta jiwa (10 % penduduk) serta dari usaha ini dapat menyekolahkan 360.000 siswa atau mahasiwa. “Sumut
menghasilkan babi hidup sebanyak 192 ribu ton, 144 ribu ton karkas, 100 ribu ton daging per tahun dengan nilai Rp 6
triliun atau sebanding dengan 50 % APBD (Anggaran Pendapatan dan Belanja Daerah) Sumut yang totalnya sebesar
Rp 12 triliun. Dari bisnis ransum babi yang sebanyak 876 ribu ton per tahun terdapat perputaran uang sebesar Rp 4,3
triliun dan dari bisnis obat-obatan dan vitamin terdapat omzet sekitar Rp 60 miliar per tahun,” urai Sauland
