Initial Outline, Stage One

• The Hero, a young and roguish noble, has been sent north, awarded the vacant Barony of
High Peak, a once-prosperous land fallen to rack and ruin. He arrives to learn he was meant
to die – that a dragon has taken over the land, and no-one is able to stop him. This is a job
for the hero, but he will find little help…
• A band of outlaws that he captures early on becomes his 'army' in a quest to slay the dragon
and restore peace to the land. A local snake cult, working with a rival noble family, are
opposing him in this. The answer is to find the tomb of the last dragon-slayer, somewhere in
the mountains to the north.
• Which they do, and find the sword, shattered into pieces, but are able to bind bits of it into a
spear. Cue a desperate charge in the middle of a battle, and the dragon is defeated – not
killed, but it flees.
• Meanwhile, in the lands south of High Peak, a Sorceress rules, and sends one of her
apprentices north to retrieve a magical grimoire, one with ancient spells, as a final test of her
worth and merit. A warrior is sent as her guardian, but is really her assassin, ordered to kill
her if she finds the book.
• Guess where it is.
• Their paths finally cross in the third act, when they work together to fight the dragon and
save the land, but after that, there are a lot of loose ends left to tie up for future books…

Races
• Humans

Do I need all the other races? Humans, Dwarves, Elves might be enough – perhaps Goblins as well?
Lord of the Rings only had Goblins and Orcs, created by evil sorcery. This being 'against the
dragons', probably something specifically related to that is better. There are effectively four races
then – Humans, Dwarves, Elves and Dragons. Serpent Men? Snakes? Khodri.

Khodri – Serpent Men. Works

Akmon – Dwarves (Stone)
Do I need Elves? Yes, really, I do.
Senhax – Elves (Old)

Skip the funky names. Khondri sounds good – sort of Egyptian. These are shapechanging snake-
men, the spawn of the dragons, slowly creeping into civilized lands. Only a magician can detect
their presence, for they radiate dark sorcery.
