Example 1: Verify the associative laws of union

Where A = {1,2,3,4}

Solution:-

L.H.S = A U (B U C) = {1,2,3,4} U ({3,4,5,6,7,8} U {6,7,8,9,10})

= {1, 2, 3, 4} U {3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10}

= {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10} 1

R.H.S = (A U B) U C = ({1, 2, 3, 4} U {3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8}) U {6, 7, 8, 9, 10}

= {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8} U {6, 7, 8, 9, 10}

= {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10} 2

From 1 and 2 we prove that

A U (B U C) = (A U B) U C

Q 3: Verify the associative laws of intersection.

A ∩ (B ∩ C) = (A ∩ B) ∩ C

Where A = {1, 2, 3, 4}, B = {3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8} & C = {6, 7, 8, 9, 10}

Q 4: Show That

if A = {a, b, c}, B = {b, d, f} & C = {a, f, c}

A U (B ∩ C) = (A U B) ∩ (A U C)

Solution: The perfect square

of 13 is

= 169

Example 3: Convert (1101)2 into equivalent number in decimal system.

Solution: (1101)2 = 1 x 23 + 1 x 22 + 0 x 21 + 1 x 20

= 8+4+0+1

Q 2: Convert following into an equivalent number with base 2 & base 5.

Example 1: if 35 labourers dig 805 cm3 of earth in 5 hours, how much of earth will 30

labourers dig in 6 hours?

Solution: As the number of labourers decrease, the earth dug will also decrease. It is a direct

proportion as the working time increase, the earth dug will also increase. It is also a direct proportion.

Let the earth dug be x cm3

Example 1: Add 3 X3 + 5 X2 - 4 X, X3 - 6 + 3 X2

and 6 - X2 - X

Solution: 3 X3 + 5 X2 - 4X + 0

X3 + 3 X2 + 0X - 6

0 X3 - X2 - X + 6

Sum: 4 X3 + 7 X2 - 5X

Example 2: Subtract 2 X3 - 4 X2 + 8 - X

from 5 X4 + X - 3 X2 - 9

Solution: 5 X4 + 0 X3 - 3X + X - 9

± 0 X4 + 2 X3 ± 4 X2 ± X ± 8

Difference: 5 X4 - 2 X3 + X2 + 2X - 17

Example 3: Find product of 4X2 and 5 X3 (horizontal method)

Solution (4 X2) (5 X3) = 4 X 5 (X2 x X3) (Associative law)

= 20 (X2 x X3)

= 20 (X 2+3) (Law of power)

= 20 X5

Example 4: Multiply 2 X – 3 with 5 X + 6

Solution: Vertical method.

5X + 6

2X - 3

10 X2 + 12 X

- 15 X - 18

Q 3: Find product

a. (X + 3) (X2 – 3 X + 9)
