Modul 4 – Advanced Reservoir Flow Solutions
Application of Convolution Theory for Flow Problems
Due date : 16 April 2020
Pre-requisite:
Problem:
In this assignment you are to derive solutions of radial infinite acting flow diffusivity equation by
considering wellbore storage and skin., which in dimensionless term is given as:
1 𝜕𝑝 𝜕 2 𝑝𝐷 𝜕𝑝𝐷
( 𝜕𝑟 𝐷) + 2 = [Radial flow]............................................................................................... (1)
𝑟𝐷 𝐷 𝜕𝑟𝐷 𝜕𝑡𝐷
● Initial Condition:
𝜕𝑝𝑤𝐷 𝜕𝑝
𝐶𝐷 − 𝜕𝑟 𝐷 |𝑟𝐷 =0 = 1 [Wellbore storage effect] ..............................................................(3)
𝜕𝑡𝐷 𝐷
𝜕𝑝
𝑝𝑤𝐷 = [𝑝𝐷 − 𝑠 ( 𝜕𝑟 𝐷 )] [Skin effect near wellbore] ...........................................................(4)
𝐷 𝑟𝐷 =1
(a) Explain the physical meaning of initial conditions defined in (3) and (4)
(b) Using Laplace Transform approach and convolution theory, show that solution for Eq 1 –
5 is, in Laplace domain
𝐾0 (√𝑝𝐷 ) + 𝑠
ℒ(𝑝𝑤𝐷 ) =
1 + 𝐶𝐷 𝑝𝐷 𝐾0 (√𝑃) + 𝑠𝐶𝐷 𝑝𝐷
(c) Using the inverted solution from (b), which is described as (integrated against tD)
𝑝𝑤𝐷 (𝑠, 𝐶𝐷 , 𝑡𝐷 )
∞ 3
4 [(1 − 𝑒 −𝑡𝐷 )]
= 2∫ 3 𝑑𝑡𝐷
𝜋 𝑡𝐷 {[𝑡𝐷 𝐶𝐷 𝐽0 (𝑡𝐷 ) − (1 − 𝐶𝐷 𝑠𝑡𝐷2 )𝐽1 (𝑡𝐷 )]2 + [𝑡𝐷 𝐶𝐷 𝑌0 (𝑡𝐷 ) − (1 − 𝐶𝐷 𝑠𝑡𝐷2 )𝑌1 (𝑡𝐷 )]2 }
0
Plot the solution of PwD vs tD in log-log scale for several values of CD (100,1000,10000,100000)
and s (-5,0,5,10,20) for dimensionless time range up to 107. Show that the effect of wellbore
storage and skin distortion ‘dies out’ when 𝑡𝐷 > 0.2𝐶𝐷 𝑠, 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑠 > 0
Hint : Solve the integral numerically, or you might want to use inverse laplace transform
numerically from (c), if you do, please show the validation of your numerical inversion to the
analytical solution
