BARDDHAMAN : THE HOST TOWN

Barddhaman (spelt as Burdwan also) is a place of historical importance. It has evolved through the
longstanding rules of Nawabs and Rajas. One can observe the reflection of architectural beauty in palaces
and temples established by the past rulers. It is also an ideal place of cultural assimilation as the past rulers
were immigrants to Barddhaman. It is situated on the left bank of the River Damodar and is well connected
by the Eastern Railway and G.T. Road. Barddhaman is about 100 kms north-west of Kolkata city. It enjoys
the locational advantage between Kolkata metro city to the south-east and Durgapur-Asansol industrial
complexes in the west. Barddhaman city has a number of tourist places of historical importance. The famous
Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan established by Rabindranath Tagore is situated (about 50 kms.) nearby. In
o
March, the sky remains generally clear with average temperature of 30 C. Light cotton clothes are sufficient.
