[Hanuman courses through the path of the Charanas -- crosses the ocean -- reaches Lanka]

ततो रावणनीतायाः सीतायाः शत्रक


ु शर्नः।
इयेष पदम वे टुं चारणाचिरते पिथ।।5.1.1।।

ततः then, शत्रक


ु शर्नः crusher off enemies, रावणनीतायाः carried by Ravana, सीतायाः Sita's, पदम ्
whereabouts, अ वे टुम ् to search, चारणाचिरते where charanas the celestial bards move, पिथ way,
इयेष resolved .

Hanuman, crusher of enemies resolved to find the whereabouts of Sita, carried away by Ravana.
He followed the path of the Charanas, celestial bards.

द ु करं िन प्रित व वं िचकीषर्न ् कमर् वानरः।


समद
ु ग्रिशरोग्रीवो गवांपितिरवाबभौ।।5.1.2।।

वानरः vanara, द ु करम ् formidable, िन प्रित व वम ् which could not be challenged, िचकीषर्न ्
intending to (cross), समद
ु ग्रिशरोग्रीवः raised his head and neck, गवां पितः इव like the best of bulls,
बभौ appeared.

Hanuman who raised his head and neck, intending to cross the formidable ocean which none
else could accomplish, looked like a leading bull.

अथ वैडूयर्वणषु शा वलेषु महाबलः।


धीरः सिललक पेषु िवचचार यथासख
ु म ्।।5.1.3।।

अथ then, महाबलः mighty, धीरः calm, वैडूयर्वणषु of the colour of vaidurya (tawny), सिललक पेषु
on the sheet of water (marshy land with green grass that looked like sheet of water), शा वलेषु on
green grassy lands, यथासख
ु म ् very easily, िवचचार strdled.

Tawnyhued Hanuman, gifted with extraordinary strength and patience happily strolled on the
marshy tracts of grassy land which had the colour of vaidurya.
िवजान ् िवत्रासयन ् धीमानुरसा पादपान ् हरन ्।

ु हूि नघ्नन ् प्रवद्ध
ृ इव केसरी।।5.1.4।।

धीमान ् wise, िवजान ् birds, िवत्रासयन ् scaring, उरसा with his chest, पादपान ् trees, हरन ् uprooting,
प्रवद्ध
ृ ः grown, केसरी इव like a lion, सब
ु हून ् groups, मग
ृ ां च animals also, िनघ्नन ् trampling.

Wise Hanuman went about like a lion scaring away birds, uprooting trees with his chest, and
trampling many animals.

नीललोिहतमांिज ठपत्रवणः िसतािसतैः।


वभाविविहतैि चत्रैधार्तिु भः समलङ्कृतम ्।।5.1.5।।
काम िपिभरािव टमभी णं सपिर छदै ः।
यक्षिक नरग धवदवक पै च प नगैः।।5.1.6।।

नीललोिहतमांिज ठपत्रवणः blue, red, yellow and green coloured, िसतािसतैः as well as with white
and black colours, वभाविविहतैः in their natural state, िचत्रैः by wonderful ones, धातुिभः with
minerals, समलङ्कृतम ् decorated all over, काम िपिभः by those who take any form at free will,
सपिर छदै ः all surrounded by their retinue, यक्षिक नरग धवः by yakshas, kinneras and
gandharvas,अभी णम ् very much, आिव टम ् occupied, दवक पै च resembling gods, प नगैः by
nagas.

The mountain was as though decorated with mineral rocks of varied colours like blue, red,
yellow and green as well as black and white৷৷It was frequently visited by yakshas, kinneras,
gandharvas and nagas surrounded by their retinue, capable of assuming any form at their free
will rivalling gods and nagas in splendour.

स त य िगिरवयर् य तले नागवरायुते।


ित ठन ् किपवर तत्र दे नाग इवाबभौ।।5.1.7।।

सः that, किपवरः leader of monkeys, तत्र there, नागवरायुते with lordly elephants, त य िगिरवयर् य
at the great mountain, तले foot, ित ठन ् stood, दे centre, नागः इव like elephant, अबभौ looked.

As the monkey leader stood at the foot of the great mountain filled with lordly elephants he
looked like an elephant standing at the centre of a pond.
स सय
ू ार्य महे द्राय पवनाय वयंभव
ु े।
भत
ू े य चा जिलं कृ वा चकार गमने मितम ्।।5.1.8।।

सः that, सय
ू ार्य to the Sun, महे द्राय to Mahendra, lord of the gods, पवनाय to the wind god,
वयंभव
ु े to the creator, Brahma, भत
ू े यः the attendants of lord Siva अ जिलम ् salutations with
folded palms, कृ वा offered, गमने to go, मितम ् resolution, चकार he made.

Offering salutations with folded palms to the Sungod, to Mahendra, lord of the gods, to the
windgod, to the Creator Brahma and to all the attendants of lord Siva, made up his mind to
proceed (to Lanka).

ु ः कुवर्न ् पवनाया मयोनये।


अ जिलं प्राङ्मख
ततो िह ववध
ृ े ग तुं दिक्षणो दिक्षणां िदशम ्।।5.1.9।।

प्राङ्मख
ु ः facing the east, आ मयोनये his father, पवनाय windgod, अ जिलम ् salutations with
folded palms, कृ वा having offered, ततः then, दिक्षण with equanimity, दिक्षणां िदशम ् southern
direction, ग तुम ् to depart, ववध
ृ े िह grew in size.

Hanuman, endowed with great equanimity, facing the east and joining his palms by way of
salutaion to the Windgod, his father, he enlarged his size and turned south in order to depart.

लवङ्गप्रवरै र् टः लवने कृतिन चयः।


ववध
ृ े रामव ृ यथर्ं समद्र
ु इव पवर्स।ु ।5.1.10।।

लवङ्गप्रवरै ः the monkey troops, टः were gazing, लवने taking leap, कृतिन चयः resolved,
पवर्सु during the fullmoon days, समद्र
ु ः इव like the sea, रामव ृ यथर्म ् for the welfare of Rama,
ववध
ृ े began to grow in size.

Having made up his mind to leap for the cause of Rama, Hanuman began to grow in size just as
the sea grows during the fullmoon and newmoon days, while the monkey troops were watching.

िन प्रमाणशरीरः सन ् िललङ्घियषुरणर्वम ्।
बाहु यां पीडयामास चरणा यां च पवर्तम ्।।5.1.11।।
अणर्वम ् ocean, िललङ्घियषुः one wishing to cross over, िन प्रमाणशरीरः having an immeasurable
figure, सन ् while being, बाहु याम ् with both his arms, चरणा यां च and with feet, पवर्तम ्
mountain, पीडयामास pressed.

Having swollen to an immeasurable figure, he pressed on the mountain with his feet and hands in
an attempt to cross the ocean.
स चचालाचल चािप मह ु ू तर्ं किपपीिडतः।
त णां पुि पताग्राणां सवर्ं पु पमशातयत ्।।5.1.12।।

किपपीिडतः pressed firmly by Hanuman, सः अचल चािप that mountain also, मह


ु ू तम
र् ् for a moment,
चचाल was shaken, पुि पताग्राणाम ् flowers on the top, त णाम ् of trees, सवर्म ् all, पु पम ् flowers,
अशातयत ् dropped down.

Pressed firmly by Hanuman, the mountain was shaken for a moment which caused the flowers to
drop down from the tree tops.

तेन पादपमक्
ु तेन पु पौघेण सग
ु ि धना।
सवर्तः संवत
ृ ः शैलो बभौ पु पमयो यथा।।5.1.13।।

शैलः the mountain, पादपमक्


ु तेन by those dropped down from the trees, सग
ु ि धना full of
fragrance, पु पौघेण heap of flowers, सवर्तः all over, संवत
ृ ः covered, यथा like, बभौ appeared,
पु पमय: made of flowers.

With heaps of flowers full of fragrance fallen down from the trees all over the mountain, it
looked as though it was a mountain of flowers.

तेन चो तमवीयण पी यमानः स पवर्तः।


सिललं स प्रसु ाव मदं म त इव िवपः।।5.1.14।।

उ तमवीयण by the highly valiant self, तेन by him, पी यमानः pressed very hard, सः पवर्तः that
mountain, म तः intoxicated, िवपः elephant, मदम ् इव like the rut, सिललम ् the water, स प्रसु ाव
exuded profusely.

The mountain pressed hard under the feet of the valiant (Hanuman), discharged streams of water
just as an elephant in rut would exude water of intoxication.
पी यमान तु बिलना महे द्र तेन पवर्तः।
रीतीिनर्वत
र् य
र् ामास का चना जनराजतीः।।5.1.15।।

बिलना by the powerful, तेन by him, पी यमानः having pressed, महे द्रः पवर्तः mount Mahendra,
का चना चनराजतीः of gold and silver, रीतीः streams, िनवर्तय
र् ामास started forming.

Pressed by the powerful Hanuman, mount Mahendra let out streams of the hue of gold and silver
(containing the ores of these minerals)৷৷

मम
ु ोच च िशलाः शैलो िवशालाः समनःिशलाः।
म यमेनािचर्षा जु टा धूमराजीिरवानलः।।5.1.16।।

शैलः mountain, म यमेन in the midst, अिचर्षा by the flame, जु टा:possed with, अनलः fire,
धम
ू राजीिरव like the columns of smoke, समनः िशलाः along with sulphur pigments, िवशालाः big
one, िशलाः boulders, मम
ु ोच threw out, च even.

The mountain threw down big boulders along with sulphur just like fire emits columns of smoke,
surrounded by flames.

िगिरणा पी यमानेन पी यमानािन सवर्तः।


गह ू ािन िवनेदिु वर्कृतैः वरै ः।।5.1.17।।
ु ािव टािन भत

ु ािव टािन of the caves, भत
ू ािन creatures, पी यमानेन being pressed, िगिरणा by the mountain,
सवर्तः all over, पी यमानािन on account of pressing, िवकृतैः with horrible, वरै ः voices, िवनेदःु
shrieked.

Squeezed on all sides of the mountain by Hanuman, all creatures living in the caves shrieked
making horrible sounds .

स महास वस नादः शैलपीडािनिम तजः।


पिृ थवीं पूरयामास िदश चोपवनािन च।।5.1.18।।

शैलपीडािनिम तजः caused by the crushing of the mountain, सः that, महास वस नादः loud noise
of various creatures, पिृ थवीम ् the earth, िदश च all directions, उपवनािन च and the surrounding
groves, पूरयामास filled.
Due to the crushing of the mountain, a loud noise of the various creatures shot up filling the earth
in all directions and groves around.

िशरोिभः पथ
ृ ुिभः सपार् यक्त वि तकलक्षणैः।
वम तः पावकं घोरं ददं शद
ु र् शनैः िशलाः।।5.1.19।।

सपार्ः snakes, यक्त वि तकलक्षणैः with signs of swastika marks, पथ


ृ ुिभः by wide ones, िशरोिभः
with hoods, घोरम ् terrible, पावकम ् fire, वम तः poured out, दशनैः with fangs, िशलाः ददं शुः bit the
rocks.

The snakes spread out their broad hoods manifesting swastika marks on them and bit the rocks
with their fangs pouring out terrible fire.

ता तदा सिवषैदर् टाः कुिपतै तैमह


र् ािशलाः।
ज वलःु पावको ी ता िबिभद ु च सह धा।।5.1.20।।

तदा then, सिवषैः by the venomous, कुिपतैः by the angry, तैः by them, द टाः bitten, ताः महािशलाः
the huge rocks, पावकोददी ताः burnt by the flame, ज वलःु burnt, सह धा in a thousand pieces,
िबिभद ु च and broke.

Bitten by the venomous and angry snakes, the mountain was broken into a thousand pieces by
the blazing flames.

यािन चौषधजालािन ति मन ् जातािन पवर्ते।


िवषघ्ना यिप नागानां न शेकुः शिमतुं िवषम ्।।5.1.21।।

ति मन ् पवर्ते on that mountain, जातािन grown, यािन those, औषथजालािन medicinal herbs,
िवषघ्ना यिप even those which can counteract poison, नागानाम ् of the snakes, िवषम ् poison,
शिमतम
ु ् to neutralize, न शेकुः were not able to.

Even the medicinal herbs grown on the mountain could not neutralize the effect of the poison of
snakes.

िभ यतेऽयं िगिरभत
ूर् ैिरित म वा तपि वनः।
त्र ता िव याधरा त माद ु पेतुः त्री गणैः सह।।5.1.22।।
पानभिू मगतं िह वा है ममासवभाजनम ्।
पात्रािण च महाहार्िण करकां च िहर मयान ्।।5.1.23।

ले यानु चावचान ् भ यान ् मांसािन िविवधािन च।


आषर्भािण च चमार्िण खडगां च कनक स न ्।।5.1.24।।

अयम ् this, िगिरः mountain, भत


ू ैः by creatures, िभ यते broken, इित thus, म वा after, तपि वनः
ascetics, उ पेतुः jumped up, िव याधराः Vidyadharas, त्र ताः terrified, पानभिू मगतम ् from the
drinking places, है मम ् golden, आसवभाजनम ् drinking cups, महाहार्िण valuable ones, करकां च
goblets, उ चावचान ् various big and small ones, ले यान ् food that is licked, भ यान ् eatables,
िविवधािन of many kinds, मांसािन meat, आषर्भािण of oxen, चमार्िण animal hides, कनक स न ्
covered with golden sheaths, खडगां च swords, िह वा after, त्रीगणैः सह along with groups of
women, त मात ् from that place, उ पेतुः flew away.

Even the ascetics left the place approaching that the mountain would be broken into pieces by
creatures. The alarmed vidyadharas leaped into the sky along with groups of their women,
leaving behind golden jugs of wine as well as precious utensils, big and small sizes, and golden
goblets, cups in the drinking place, as well as many tasty eatables like licking food, chewing food
and many types of meat. They also left bullhides and swords with golden sheaths.

कृतक ठगण
ु ाः क्षीबा रक्तमा यानुलेपनाः।
रक्ताक्षाः पु कराक्षा च गगनं प्रितपेिदरे ।।5.1.25।।

कृतक ठगण
ु ाः wearing chains, क्षीबाः intoxicated ones, रक्तमा यानुलेपनाः wearing garlands and
smearing with red unguents (sandalpaste), रक्ताक्षाः with red eyes, पु कराक्षा च with lotus like
eyes, गगनम ् to the sky, प्रितपेिदरे flew into the sky.

The intoxicated vidyadharas with eyes red like lotuses, wearing garlands around the neck and
smeared with red sandalpaste flew into the sky.

हारनूपुरकेयरू पािरहायर्धराः ि त्रयः।


िवि मताः सि मता त थुराकाशे रमणैः सह।।5.1.26।।
हारनूपुरकेयरू पािरहायर्धराः wearing necklaces, anklets and armlets, ि त्रयः women, िवि मताः
wonderstruck, सि मताः gently smiling, रमणैः सह with their lovers, आकाशे in the sky, त थुः
stayed.

Adorned with necklaces, anklets and armlets, the vidyadharis stayed wonderstruck in the sky,
smiling gently in the company of their lovers.
दशर्य तो महािव यां िव याधरमहषर्यः।
सिहता त थरु ाकाशे वीक्षा चक्रु च पवर्तम ्।।5.1.27।।

िव याधरमहषर्यः the seers among vidyadharas, महािव याम ् proficient in different fields of
knowledge, दशर्य तः watching, सिहताः collectively, आकाशे in the sky, त थुः stayed, पवर्तम ्
mountain, वीक्षांचक्रु च were also watching.

The seers among the Vidyadharas, proficient in different fields of knowledge were also watching
the mountain from the sky along with others.

शु व
ु ु च तदा श दमष
ृ ीणां भािवता मनाम ्।
चारणानां च िसद्धानां ि थतानां िवमलेऽ बरे ।।5.1.28।।

तदा then, िवमले in a pure, अ बरे in the sky, ि थतानाम ् of those stationed, चारणानाम ् of charanas,
िसद्धानाम ् of siddhas, भािवता मनाम ् of highly, ऋषीणां च and of seers, श दम ् sound, शु ुवुः heard.

Then the vidyadharas heard the words of praise(of Hanuman) by the sages, seekers of the
ultimate truth, the charanas and the siddhas who stood and watched in the clear sky:

एष पवर्तसङ्काशो हनम
ु ान ् मा ता मजः।
िततीषर्ित महावेग समद्र
ु ं मकरालयम ्।।5.1.29।।

पवर्तसङ्काशः resembling a mountain, मा ता मजः son of the windgod (Hanuman), महावेगः swift,
एषः him, हनुमान ् Hanuman, मकरालयम ् abode of crocodiles, समद्र
ु म ् ocean, िततीषर्ित desiring to
cross.

"Hanuman the son of the Windgod, who is like a mountain, with extraordinary might intends to
cross the ocean, the abode of crocodiles".
रामाथर्ं वानराथर्ं च िचकीषर्न ् कमर् द ु करम ्।
समद्र
ु य परं पारं द ु प्रापं प्रा तुिम छित।।5.1.30।।

रामाथर्म ् for the purpose of Rama, वानराथर्ं च for the sake of vanaras also, द ु करम ् impossible, कमर्
task, िचकीषर्न ् desirous of achieving, समद्र
ु य of the ocean, द ु प्रापम ् difficult to reach, परं पारम ्
the other side, प्रा तुम ् to reach, इ छित he wishes.

"For the sake of Rama and the vanaras he wants to reach the other shore of the ocean, which is
difficult, and indeed impossible".

इित िव याधराः ु वा वच तेषां महा मनाम ्।


तमप्रमेयं द शुः पवर्ते वानरषर्भम ्।।5.1.31।।

िव याधराः vidyadharas, इित thus, महा मनाम ् of great sages, तेषाम ् of them, वचः word, ु वा
having heard, पवर्ते on the mountain, अप्रमेयम ् beyond measure, वानरषर्भम ् bull among the
vanaras, Hanuman, तम ् him, द शुः saw.

The vidyadharas heard the sages speaking in that manner on the mountain. They beheld
Hanuman, the bull among vanaras, whose strength was beyond measure.

दध
ु ुवे च स रोमािण चक पे चाचलोपमः।
ु हानादं सम
ननाद सम ु हािनव तोयदः।।5.1.32।।

अचलोपमः huge as mountain, सः he, रोमािण hair, दध


ु ुवे shook, चक पे च and moved, सम
ु हान ्
great, तोयदः इव like a cloud, सम
ु हानादम ् huge sound, ननाद produced.

Hanuman, huge as a mountain moved his body and shook the hair on his body, thundering like a
cloud.

आनुपू यण व ृ तं च लाङ्गल
ू ं लोमिभि चतम ्।
उ पित यन ् िविचक्षेप पिक्षराज इवोरगम ्।।5.1.33।।

उ पित यन ् ready to take off, आनुपू यण in an order, व ृ तम ् covered, लोमिभः with hair, िचतम ् full
of, लाङ्गल
ू म ् tail, पिक्षराजः king of birds, उरगं इव like a serpent, िविचक्षेप shook, cast down.

Like the king of birds Garuda would shake a serpent, he shook his tail covered with hair in order
to take off.
त य लाङ्गूलमािवद्धमा तवेग य प ृ ठतः।
द शे ग डेनेव ि यमाणो महोरगः।।5.1.34।।

आ तवेग य of great, त य his, प ृ ठतः at the back, अिवद्धम ् curled, लाङ्गल


ू म ् tail, ग डेन by
Garuda, ि यमाणः carried off, महोरगः इव like a big serpent, द शे appeared.

Hanuman had the tail curled at his back which appeared like a big serpent being carried off by
Garuda.

बाहू सं त भयामास महापिरघसि नभौ।


ससाद च किपः क यां चरणौ स चुकोच च।।5.1.35।।

किपः monkey, महापिरघसि नभौ like huge iron clubs, बाहू arms, सं त भयामास pressing down
firmly , क याम ् in the waist, ससाद crouched in, चरणौ his feet, स चुकोच च contracted.

The monkey fixed his arms, looking like iron clubs, firmly on the mountain and
crouched his waist and contracted his feet.

सं य च भज
ु ौ ीमां तथैव च िशरोधराम ्।
तेजः स वं तथा वीयर्मािववेश स वीयर्वान ्।।5.1.36।।

ीमान ् glorious, वीयर्वान ् courageous, सः Hanuman, भज


ु ौ च even shoulders, तथैव च in the same
way, िशरोधराम ् his head, सं य after contracting, तेजः glow, स वम ् energy, तथा so also, वीयर्म ्
vigour, आिववेश summoned up.

The glorious and courageous Hanuman his head and shoulders contracted, summoned up all his
energy and vigour.

मागर्मालोकय दरू ाद ू वर्ं प्रिणिहतेक्षणः।


रोध दये प्राणानाकाशमवलोकयन ्।।5.1.37।।

ऊ वर्म ् upward, प्रिणिहतेक्षणः setting his eyes up, दरू ात ् from a distance, मागर्म ् direction,
आलोकयन ् while looking at, आकाशम ् sky, अवलोकयन ् looking at, प्राणान ् breath, दये in the
chest, रोध restrained.
Having cast his eyes upward in order to view the distance and direction in which he had to leap,
he restrained his breath in the chest while looking at the sky.
प यां ढमव थानं कृ वा स किपकु जरः।
िनकु य कण हनम
ु ानु पित यन ् महाबलः।।
वानरान ् वानर े ठ इदं वचनमब्रवीत ्।।5.1.38।।

किपकु जरः an elephant among monkeys, महाबलः very strong one, वानर े ठः best of vanaras, सः
हनुमान ् that Hanuman, प याम ् feet, ढम ् firmly, अव थानम ् standing in that position, कृ वा did,
कण ears, िनकु य contracted, उ पित यन ् while preparing to leap, वानरान ् vanaras, इदम ् this,
वचनम ् word, अब्रवीत ् said.

A mighty elephant among vanaras, Hanuman holding his feet firmly and standing in that
position, contracted his ears and addressed the monkeys, when he was about to leap:

यथा राघविनमक्
ुर् तः शरः वसनिवक्रमः।
ग छे त व गिम यािम लङ्कां रावणपािलताम ्।।5.1.39।।

राघविनमक्
ुर् तः released by Raghava, शरः arrow, यथा similar manner, ग छे त ् goes, त वत ् like that,
वसनिवक्रमः with the speed of wind, रावणपािलताम ् governed by Ravana, लङ्काम ् Lanka,
गिम यािम I will reach.

"Just like an arrow released by Raghava would fly, I too will proceed with the speed of the wind
to reach Lanka ruled by Ravana.

न िह द्र यािम यिद तां लङ्कायां जनका मजाम ्।


अनेनैव िह वेगेन गिम यािम सरु ालयम ्।।5.1.40।।

लङ्कायाम ् in Lanka, तां जनका मजाम ् that daughter of Janaka, न िह द्र यािम यिद If I am not able
to find, अनेन with this, वेगेनैव िह with speed indeed, सरु ालयम ् abode of gods, गिम यािम I will
go.

"If I am not able to find the daughter of Janaka at Lanka I will go to heaven, abode of the gods,
with the same speed.
यिद वा ित्रिदवे सीतां न द्र या यकृत मः।
ब वा राक्षसराजानमानिय यािम रावणम ्।।5.1.41।।

ित्रिदवे in heaven, सीताम ् Sita, न द्र यािम यिद वा If I do not find, अकृत मः in spite of all my
efforts, राक्षसराजानम ् king of rakshasas, रावणम ् Ravana, ब वा bind, आनिय यािम will bring.

"If I do not find Sita in heaven in spite of my efforts, I will bind that king of demons, Ravana and
bring him here.

सवर्था कृतकाय ऽहमे यािम सह सीतया।


आनिय यािम वा लङ्कां समु पा य सरावणाम ्।।5.1.42।।

अहम ् I, सवर्था by all means, कृतकायर्ः doing my duty successfully, सह सीतया along with Sita,
ए यािम I will come, वा or, सरावणाम ् along with Ravana, लङ्काम ् Lanka, समु पा य after
uprooting, आनिय यािम will bring.

"I will, by all means return successful with Sita or else I will uproot Lanka along with Ravana
and bring him here".

एवमक्
ु वा तु हनुमा वानरा वानरो तमः।।5.1.43।।
उ पपाताथ वेगेन वेगवानिवचारयन ्।
सप
ु णर्िमव चा मानं मेने स किपकु जरः।।5.1.44।।

वानरो तमः foremost vanara, हनुमान ् Hanuman, वानरान ् to vanaras, एवम ् that way, उक् वा having
said, अथ then, अिवचारयन ् without any exertion, वेगवान ् swift, वेगेन speedily, उ पपात leaped, सः
he, किपकु जरः best of vanaras, elephantlike, आ मानम ् himself, सप
ु णर्िमव like bird Suparna
(Garuda), मेने he felt.

Having thus addressed the monkeys the foremost of vanaras, Hanuman endowed with great
speed leaped without any exertion. The elephant among monkeys felt like Garuda.

समु पतित ति मं तु वेगा ते नगरोिहणः।


सं य िवटपान ् सवार्न ् समु पेतुः सम ततः।।5.1.45।।
ति मन ् when he, समु पतित was leaping, वेगात ् swiftly, ते they, नगरोिहणः numerous trees, सवार्न ्
all the, िवटपान ् branches, सं य drawing together, सम ततः from all over, समु पेतुः flew.

When he took off, numerous trees on the mountain drawing together the branches all over flew
along with him.

स म तकोयि टमकान ् पादपान ् पु पशािलनः।


उ वह नू वेगेन जगाम िवमलेऽ बरे ।।5.1.46।।

सः he, म तकोयि टमकान ् lapwings in heat, पु पशािलनः full of flowers, पादपान ् trees, ऊ वेगेन by
the speed of his thighs, उ वहन ् while coursing, िवमले pristine (cloudless), अ बरे in the sky,
जगाम went.

He swept away the lapwings in heat on the blossoms of the trees by the speed of his thighs while
he coursed through the cloudless sky.

Swept away by the force of his thighs, the trees bent forward following him for a while just as
relatives accompany their kith and kin on long travel.

ऊ वेगो मिथताः uprooted by the speed of thighs, साला च sala trees also, अ ये other, नगो तमाः
great trees, सै याः troops, महीपितम ् इव like the king, हनूम तम ् Hanuman, अनुजग्मःु follow.

Uprooted by the force of Hanuman's thighs,great trees like sala followed him just like the troops
follow the king.

बहुिभः by many, सप ु ुि पताग्रैः with blossomed tops, पादपैः with trees, अि वत: endowed with, किपः
vanaras, पवर्ताकारः mountain like, हनुमान ् Hanuman, अद्भत ु दशर्नः queer appearance, बभव
ू became.

With numerous trees laden with flowers following him, Hanuman who looked like a mountain,
presented a queer spectable.
सारव तोऽथ ये वक्ष
ृ ा यम जन ् लवणा भिस।

भयािदव महे द्र य पवर्ता व णालये।।5.1.50।।

अथ and then, सारव तः huge, ये those, वक्ष


ृ ाः trees, महे द्र य Indra's, भयात ् out of fear, पवर्ताः
mountains, व णालये इव like the abode of Varuna, ocean, लवणा भिस in the salt sea, यम जन ्
sank.

Then the huge trees sank into the ocean of salt water even as mountains did, afraid of Indra's
(thunderbolt).
स नानाकुसमु ःै कीणर्ः किपः साङ्कुरकोरकैः।

साङ्कुरकोरकैः with sprouts and buds, नानाकुसम


ु ःै with different kinds of flowers, कीणर्ः spread
over, मेघसङ्काशः resembling a cloud, सः किपः that Hanuman, ख योतैः covered with fireflies,
पवर्तः इव like a mountain, शुशुभे was shining brightly.

Covered with tender sprouts and buds of different kinds of flowers Hanuman shone brightly like
a flying mountain with fireflies.

Shedding their blossoms (under his thrust) the trees dropped into the waters of the sea just like
close relatives follow at the time of farewell.

like the sky, प्रबभौ सः glowing.

Driven by the wind caused by Hanuman's speed a variety of flowers fell into the ocean because
of their light weight and the ocean looked colourful and bright like the starspangled sky.
पु पौघेणानुबद्धेन नानावणन वानरः।

बभौ मेघ इवाकाशे िव यु गण िवभिू षतः।।5.1.54।।

नानावणन of different colours, अनुबद्धेन stuck, पु पौघेण by the blossoms, वानरः monkey
(Hanuman), आकाशे in the sky, िव यु गणिवभिू षतः glowing like lightning, मेघः इव like the cloud,
बभौ looked.

Covered with blossoms of different kinds and colours, Hanuman looked like a cloud brightened
by lightnings in the sky.
त य वेगसमाधत ू ैः पु पै तोयम यत।।5.1.55।।

तारािभरिभरामािभ िदतािभिरवा बरम ्।

त य his, वेगसमाधत
ू ैः dropped by the speed, पु पैः with flowers, तोयम ् water, उिदतािभः rising
ones, अिभरामािभः by the very enchanting, तारािभः by stars, अ बरिमव like the sky, अ यत
appeared.
The seawater looked splendid with flowers dropped by dint of his speed. It resembled the
firmament spangled with enchanting stars just risen in the sky.
त या बरगतौ बाहू द शाते प्रसािरतौ।।5.1.56।।

पवर्ताग्रा िविन क्रा तौ प चा यािवव प नगौ।

प्रसािरतौ stretched out, अ बरगतौ spread in the sky, त य his, बाहू two arms, पवर्ताग्रात ् from the
top of the mountain, िविन क्रा तौ emerging, प चा यौ fivehooded, प नगौ इव like snakes, द शाते
looked.

That great Vanara appeared as if he was gulping the entire ocean with its rising waves. While he
was looking upward it appeared as though he was keen to drink in the sea as well.
िपबि नव बभौ चािप सोिमर्मालं महाणर्वम ्।।5.1.57।।

िपपासिु रव चाकाशं द शे स महाकिपः।

सः that, महाकिपः great vanara, सोिमर्मालम ् with its rising waves, महाणर्वम ् ocean, िपबि नव as if
gulping, बभौ looked, आकाशम ् sky, च and , अिप also, िपपासिु रव as if thirsty, द शे looked.

While he was looking upward, that great vanara appeared as if, parched with thirst, he was
gulping the entire ocean with its rising waves.
त य िव यु प्रभाकारे वायुमागार्नुसािरणः।।5.1.58।।

नयने िवप्रकाशेते पवर्त थािववानलौ।

वायुमागार्नुसािरणः of him following the direction of the wind, त य his, िव यु प्रभाकारे both
appearing like the glow of lightning, नयने eyes, पवर्त थौ on the mountain, अनलौ इव like two
fires, िवप्रकाशेते very glittering.

As he was moving in the sky following the direction of the wind, his eyes blazed like two fires
burning on the mountain, flashing like lightning.

The large, round, reddishbrown eyes of Hanuman shed their bright light like the rising Moon and

By the reflection of his copperyred nose, his face looked red like the Sun's orb coming close at
twilight.

अ बरे in the sky, लवमान य when he was flying, वायुपुत्र य of the son of the Windgod,

Indra, शोभते looks splendid.

As the son of the Windgod was flying through the sky, his coiled up tail looked splendid like the
banner installed at the festival in honour of Indra (on the fifteenth day of the month of
Bhadrapada).

यरोचत महाप्राज्ञः पिरवेषीव भा करः।

शुक्लदं ट्रः whiteteethed, महाप्राज्ञः very wise, महान ् great, अिनला मजः son of the Windgod,

With his white teeth and curled up tail, the wise son of the Windgod looked splendid like the
halo of the Sungod.
ि फग्दे शेनािभताम्रेण रराज स महाकिपः।।5.1.63।।

महता दािरतेनेव िगिरगिरकधातुना।

सः महाकिपः that great vanara, अिभताम्रेण with red one, ि फग्दे शेन with his buttocks, दािरतेन इव
as if split, महता by huge, गैिरकधातुना deposit of minerals, िगिरः इव like mountain, रराज shone.

The great monkey with copperred buttocks (other parts being dark) looked splendid like a cleft
mountain with a huge deposit of minerals shining red.
त य वानरिसंह य लवमान य सागरम ्।।5.1.64।।

कक्षा तरगतो वायुजीर्मत

सागरम ् ocean, लवमान य while he was crossing, त य his, वानरिसंह य lion like vanara,
कक्षा तरगतः through the armpits, वायःु wind, जीमत
ू ः इव like thundering cloud, गजर्ित roared.

The wind passing through the arm pits of the lionlike vanara crossing the ocean sounded like a
thundering cloud.
खे यथा िनपत यु का यु तरा ता िविनःसत ृ ा।।5.1.65।।

यते सानब
ु धा च तथा स किपकु जरः।

उ तरा तात ् from the northern part, िविनःसत


ृ ा released, सानुब धा च follows, उ का a meteor, खे in
the sky, यथा like, यते was seen, सः that, किपकु जरः elephant like vanara, तथा so, िनपतित
falling. .

The elephantlike monkey was seen darting across the ocean(going from north to south) like a
meteor risen in the north along with its tailend falling down the sky.
पत पतङ्गसङ्काशो यायतः शुशुभे किपः।।5.1.66।।

प्रवद्ध
ृ इव मातङ्गः क यया ब यमानया।

पत पतङ्गसङ्काशः resembled the setting Sun, यायतः broad, किपः monkey (Hanuman),
ब यमानया bound with, क यया with the girth, प्रवद्ध
ृ ः expanded to an enormous size, मातङ्गः इव
elephant like, शुशुभे appeared.
The vanara expanded into an enormous size form appeared as though moving like the setting
Sun. He looked like a huge elephant bound round the waist.
उपिर टा छरीरे ण छायया चावगाढया।।5.1.67।।

सागरे मा तािव टा नौिरवासी तदा किपः।

तदा then, किप: vanara, उपिर टात ् the top, शरीरे ण with his body, सागरे in the ocean, अवगाढया
reflected, छायया च shadow also, मा तािव टा swept by the wind, नौिरव like the ship, आसीत ्
appeared.

When the vanara was flying in the sky, his shadow reflected in the ocean looked like a
ship driven by the wind and sailing on the sea below (as if the lower part of his body was under
water and upper part occupied the sky)
यं यं दे शं समद्र
ु य जगाम स महाकिपः।

स स त यो वेगेन सो माद इव ल यते।।5.1.68।।

सः that, महाकिपः great vanara, समद्र


ु य of the ocean, यं यं दे शं to whichever place, जगाम went,
सः सः those, त य his, ऊ वेगेन by the speed of his thighs, सो मादः इव riotous with eddies,
whirlpools and revolving foam etc.like, ल यते was seen.

Whichever part of the sea over which that monkey flew, it appeared as though it was riotous with
eddies, whirlpools and revolving foam etc., stirred up by the speed of his thighs.
सागर योिमर्जालानामरु सा शैलव मर्णाम ्।

अिभघ्नं तु महावेगः पु लव
ु े स महाकिपः।।5.1.69।।

महावेगः very swift, सः that, महाकिपः great vanara, शैलव मर्णाम ् as mountains, सागर य of the
ocean, ऊिमर्जालानाम ् the rows of waves, उरसा by his chest, अिभघ्नन ् while dashing against,

ु े flew.

As the great vanara was flying swiftly, the oceanic waves in rows dashing against his chest rose
as high as the mountain.
किपवात च बलवान ् मेघवात च िनःसत
ृ ः।

सागरं भीमिनघ षं क पयामासतुभश

बलवान ् forceful, किपवात च wind generated by the swift movement of the monkey, िनःसत

The forceful wind generated by the monkey moving swiftly, and by the clouds agitated
the ocean violently, creating dreadful sounds.

As the tiger among the monkeys pushed the big network of waves of the saltwater ocean and
leaped forward, it appeared as if he was drawing the intermediary space dividing the earth and
the sky.
मे म दरसङ्काशानद्ध ु तान ् स महाणर्वे।

अ यक्राम महावेग तरङ्गान ् गणयि नव।।5.1.72।।

महावेगः one who is of high speed, महाणर्वे in the ocean, उद्धतान ् risen, मे म दरसङ्काशान ्
resembling mountain Meru and Mandara, तरङ्गान ् waves, गणयि नव as if counting, सः that,
अ यक्रामत ् crossed.

Hanuman moving along in high speed looked as if he was counting the mighty waves risen ike
Meru and Mandara mountains.
त य वेगसमुद्धूतं जलं सजलदं तदा।

अ बर थं िवबभ्राज शारदाभ्रिमवाततम ्।।5.1.73।।


तदा then, त य his, वेगसमद्ध
ु ूतम ् raised by his onrush, सजलदम ् along with the cloud, जलम ् water,
अ बर थम ् found in the sky, आततम ् stretched, शारदाभ्रिमव like the autumnal clouds, िवबभ्राज
shone.

Then the water raised by his onrush along with the cloud widely spread in the sky shone like an
outstreched autumnal cloud.
ितिमनक्रझषाः कूमार् य ते िववत ृ ा तदा।

व त्रापकषर्णेनेव शरीरािण शरीिरणाम ्।।5.1.74।।

तदा then, ितिमनक्रझषाः whales, crocodiles and fish, कूमार्ः tortoises, व त्रापकषर्णेन clothes put
off, शरीिरणाम ् of the bodies, शरीराणीव limbs of the body, िववत
ृ ाः exposed, य ते appeared.

On account of the seawater rising up, the whales, crocodiles, fish and tortoises laid bare like the
limbs of the body disrobed.
लवमानं समी याथ भज ु ङ्गाः सागरालयाः।

योि न तं किपशादर् ल

ु णर् इित मेिनरे ।।5.1.75।।

अथ and then, योि न in the sky, लवमानम ् coursing through, तं किपशादर् ल


ू म ् that tiger among
vanaras, समी य seeing, सागरालयाः those in the abode of the sea, भज

be Garuda, मेिनरे thought.

Seeing Hanuman, the tiger among vanaras, coursing through the sky the serpents in their
seaabode mistook him for Garuda.
दशयोजनिव तीणार् ित्रंश योजनमायता।

छाया वानरिसंह य जले चा तराभवत ्।।5.1.76।।

दशयोजनिव तीणार् spread over ten yojanas in breadth, ित्रंश योजनम ् thirty yojanas, आयता long,
वानरिसंह य of the lion among monkeys, छाया shadow, जले in water, चा तरा more pleasing,
अभवत ् looked.

The shadow of Hanuman, the lion among monkeys, thirty yojanas long and ten yojanas in
breadth appeared more pleasing৷৷
वेताभ्रघनराजीव वायुपुत्रानुगािमनी।

त य सा शुशभ
ु े छाया िवतता लवणा भिस।।5.1.77।।

वायुपुत्रानुगािमनी following the Windgod's son, लवणा भिस in the salty sea, िवतता spread out,
त य his, सा that, छाया shadow, वेताभ्रघनराजीव like dark row of clouds sailing in the pristine
sky, शुशुभे shone.

The broad shadow of the son of the Windgod in the sea following him shone like a dark row of
clouds sailing in the pristine sky.
शशु भ
ु े स महातेजा महाकायो महाकिपः।

वायुमाग िनराल बे पक्षवािनव पवर्तः।।5.1.78।।

महातेजाः splendid, महाकायः one with a huge body, सः he, महाकिपः great vanara, िनराल बे
without any support, वायम
ु ाग in the direction of the wind, पक्षवान ् having wings, पवर्तः इव like a
mountain, शुशुभे seemed.

Hanuman the great vanara, splendid with a huge body coursing through the air seemed like a
winged mountain flying the sky without any support.
येनासौ याित बलवान ् वेगेन किपकु जरः।

तेन मागण सहसा द्रोणीकृत इवाणर्वः।।5.1.79।।

बलवान ् powerful, असौ he, किपकु जरः an elephant among monkeys, वेगेन swiftly, येन मागण the
path, याित proceeding, तेन by that, सहसा instantly, अणर्वः the sea, द्रोणीकृतः इव like a valley
betwen two mountains.

As the powerful monkey, an elephant among vanaras, was proceeding swiftly along, the ocean
got instantly transformed into a trough on account of water swelling by the force of his flight.
आपाते पिक्षसङ्घानां पिक्षराज इव जन ्।

हनम
ु ान ् मेघजालािन प्रकषर्न ् मा तो यथा।।5.1.80।।

हनुमान ् Hanuman, मा तो यथा like the wind, मेघजालािन strings of clouds, प्रकषर्न ् while
attracting, पिक्षसङ्घानाम ् of the group of birds, आपाते when landed, जन ् while moving,
पिक्षराजः इव like the king of birds.

Hanuman was found pulling clusters of big clouds along with him like the Windgod and
appeared like Garuda,the king of birds, drawing flocks of birds along with him at the time of
landing.
पा डुरा णवणार्िन नीलमाि ज ठकािन च।

किपनाकृ यमाणािन महाभ्रािण चकािशरे ।।5.1.81।।

किपना by the vanara, आकृ यमाणािन drawing, पा डुरा णवणार्िन white and red colour,
नीलमाि ज ठकािन च blue and yellow clouds, महाभ्रािण big clouds, चकािशरे shining.

While Hanuman was drawing big clouds which were either white or red or blue or yellow, he
looked charming.
प्रिवश नभ्रजालािन िन पतं च पन
ु ः पन
ु ः।

प्र छ न च प्रकाश च च द्रमा इव ल यते।।5.1.82।।

ु ः पन
अभ्रजालािन strings of clouds, पन ु ः again and again, प्रिवशन ् while entering, िन पतं च and
while coming out, प्र छ न च hiding, प्रकाश च and shining, च द्रमाः इव like the Moon, ल यते
was seen.

Entering into and emerging from the clouds, he looked like the Moon that appears and disappears
(behind a bank of clouds).
लवमानं तु तं वा लवङ्गं विरतं तदा।

ववषुःर् पु पवषार्िण दे वग धवर्दानवाः।।5.1.83।।

तदा then, विरतम ् quickly, लवमानम ् crossing, तं लवङ्गम ् that monkey, वा after seeing,
दे वग धवर्दानवाः deva, gandharvas and danavas, पु पवषार्िण rain of flowers, ववषःुर् rained.

Then seeing Hanuman crossing quickly, the gods, gandharvas and demons rained flowers on
him.
तताप न िह तं सय
ू ःर् लव तं वानरो तमम ्।

िसषेवे च तदा वायू रामकायार्थिर् सद्धये।।5.1.84।।

तदा then, लव तम ् while he was leaping, तं वानरो तमम ् that best of vanaras, सय
ू ःर् Sun,
रामकायार्थिर् सद्धये for accomplishing Rama's task, न िह तताप did not discharge heat, वायुः च and
even wind, िसषेवे served cool.

The Sun spared Hanuman from the heat and even the Windgod served him, blowing cool while
he was taking leaps in order to fulfil Rama's mission.
ऋषय तु टुवु चैनं लवमानं िवहायसा।

जगु च दे वग धवार्ः प्रशंस तो महौजसम ्।।5.1.85।।

िवहायसा in the sky, लवमानम ् while he leaped, महौजसम ् a highly vigourous one, ऋषयः
ascetics, तु टुवु चैनं extolled him, दे वग धवार्ः gods and gandharvas, प्रशंस तः while prasing him,
जगु च also sang.

The sages praised him while he was coursing through the sky, the gods and gandharvas sang in
praise of him extolling his majesty and vigour.
नागा च तु टुवुयक्ष
र् ा रक्षांिस िवबुधाः खगाः।

प्रे य सव किपवरं सहसा िवगतक्लमम ्।।5.1.86।।

िवगतक्लमम ् unwearied, किपवरम ् the great monkey, प्रे य observing, सहसा at once, नागा च
nagas, यक्षाः yakshas, रक्षांिस rakshasas (who were protecting the southwest), िवबुधाः
learned sages, खगाः birds, सव all, तु टुवुः praised .

Observing the unwearied monkey the nagas, yakshas, the demons (protecting the southwest), the
learned sages and birds praised him.
ति मन ् लवगशादर् लू े लवमाने हनम ू ित।

इ वाकुकुलमानाथीर् िच तयामास सागरः।।5.1.87।।

While the monkeychief was leaping (across the sea) the Seagod wished the wellbeing of the
Ikshvaku family and honoured him. (The Seagod belonged to the same race) :

if I do not render, िववक्षताम ् by all the wise speakers, सवर्वा यः will be blamed, भिव यािम I will
be.

'If I fail to help the monkeychief, the wise will blame me'.
अहिम वाकुनाथेन सगरे ण िवविधर्तः।

इ वाकुसिचव चायं नावसीिदतम


ु हर्ित।।5.1.89।।

अहम ् I, इ वाकुनाथेन by the scion of the Ikshvakus, सगरे ण by Sagara, िवविधर्तः made to extend ,
इ वाकुसिचवः च and the minister of Ikshvaku race, अयम ् this person, अवसीिदतुम ् to perish,
नाहर्ित he shouldl not.

'I expanded on account of a scion of the Ikshvaku race (Sagara) and I should not do anything to
make him (Hanuman) suffer since he is the minister helping the Ikshvaku race'.
तथा मया िवधात यं िव मेत यथा किपः।।5.1.90।।

शेषं च मिय िव ा तः सख
ु ेनाितपित यित।

किपः monkey, यथा likewise, िव मेत he may take rest, तथा in that way, मया by myself,
िवधात यम ् arrangement has to be made, मिय on me, िव ा तः the rest, शेषम ् remaining, सख
ु ेन
comfortably, अितपित यित will leap over.

'I will have to make arrangements for his rest. Later he can resume his journey comfortably'.
इित कृ वा मितं सा वींसमद्र
ु छ नम भिस।।5.1.91।।

िहर यनाभं मैनाकमव


ु ाच िगिरस तमम ्।
समद्र
ु ः the Seagod, इित thus, सा वीं well, मितम ् in his mind, कृ वा after resolving, अ भिस in
waters, छ नम ् hidden, िहर यनाभम ् golden, िगिरस तमम ् noble mountain, मैनाकम ् to Mainaka,
उवाच said.

Having resolved in his mind, the Seagod addressed the noble, golden mount Mainaka, hidden in
the sea:
विमहासरु संघानां पातालतलवािसनाम ्।।5.1.92।।

दे वराज्ञा िगिर े ठ पिरघः सि नवेिशतः।

िगिर े ठ O foremost mountain, वम ् you, इह here, पातालतलवािसनाम ् for those residing in the
nether world, असरु सङ्घानाम ् of hordes of demons, पिरघः beam used as a barrier against the
gateway, दे वराज्ञा by the lord of the gods, सि नवेिशतः arranged.

'O foremost mountain you are kept here by Indra, lord of the gods as a barrier against
the intrusion of demons residing in the netherworld.
वमेषां जातवीयार्णां पन
ु रे वो पित यताम ्।।5.1.93।।

पाताल याप्रमेय य वारमाव ृ य ित ठिस।

जातवीयार्णाम ् of the violent, एषाम ् for these, पन


ु रे व again, उ पित यताम ् prone to come up, वम ्
you, अप्रमेय य of the immeasurable, पाताल य nether world's, वारम ् entrance, आव ृ य blocking,
ित ठिस are staying.

"You are staying at the entrance preventing the violent demons of the immeasurable nether world
from jumping onto the surface.
ितयर्गू वर्मध चैव शिक्त ते शैल विधर्तम
ु ्।।5.1.94।।

त मा संचोदयािम वामिु त ठ िगिरस तम।

शैल O mountain, ितयर्क् across, ऊ वर्म ् upward, अध चैव and at the bottom, विधर्तुम ् to grow, ते to
you, शिक्तः energy, िगिरस तम O noble mountain, त मात ् therefore, वाम ् you, स चोदयािम I am
prompting, उि त ठ you mary rise.
"O noble mountain you have the capacity to grow across, upward and downward by your free
will. I therefore prompt you to grow.
स एष किपशादर् ल ू वामप
ु यित वीयर्वान ्।।5.1.95।।

हनूमान्रामकायार्थर्ं भीमकमार् खमा लत

"Valiant Hanuman, a tiger among monkeys and a performer of dreadful deeds, is flying over you
to fulfil Rama's mission
अ य सा यं मया कायर्िम वाकुकुलवितर्नः।।5.1.96।।

मम ही वाकवः पू याः परं पू यतमा तव।

अ य to him, इ वाकुकुलवितर्नः for him who serves the Ikshvaku race, मया by me, सा यम ् help,
कायर्म ् should be given, मम to myself, इ वाकवः the kings of the Ikshvaku race, पू याः worthy of
adoration, तव to you, पू यतमाः most adorable .

"I should help him for he is working for the welfare of the Ikshavaku family. The Ikshvaku kings
are worthy of adoration to me and for you as well.
कु सािच यम माकं न नः कायर्मितक्रमेत ्।।5.1.97।।

कतर् यमकृतं कायर्ं सतां म युमद


ु ीरयेत ्।

अ माकम ् for us, सािच यम ् counselling (the duty of a minister), कु you may do, नः for us, कायर्म ्
task, न अितक्रमेत ् may not be lost, कतर् यम ् our duty, कायर्म ् task, अकृतम ् not carried out, सताम ्
for pious men, म यम
ु ् anger, उदीरयेत ् will cause.

"You may act as our minister and let us not miss this chance. Pious men lose their cool if a
worthy act is left unfulfilled.
सिललाद ू वर्मिु त ठ ित ठ वेष किप विय।।5.1.98।।

अ माकमितिथ चैव पू य च लवतां वरः।


सिललात ् from the waters, ऊ वर्म ् above, उि त ठ rise, अ माकम ् for us, अितिथ चैव guest also,
पू य च worthy of worship also, लवताम ् among the jumping ones, वरः noble, एषः किपः this
monkey, विय on you, ित ठतु let him rest.

"Rise up from the waters. Let him rest on you since this noble monkey is our guest and worthy of
worship.
चामीकरमहानाभ दे वग धवर्सेिवत।।5.1.99।।

हनम
ु ां विय िव ा त ततः शेषं गिम यित।

चामीकरमहानाभ O goldenpeaked one, दे वग धवर् सेिवत resorted to by gods, gandharvas, हनुमान ्


Hanuman, विय by you, िव ा तः resting, ततः then, शेषम ् remaing part, गिम यित will cover.

"O goldenpeaked mountainyou are the refuge of the gods and gandharvas. Let him also rest on
you for a while before he negotiates the remaining part of the journey.
काकु थ यानश ृ ं यं च मैिथ या च िववासनम ्।।5.1.100।।

मं च लवगे द्र य समी यो थातुमहर्िस।

ृ ं यं च good nature, मैिथ याः Sita's, िववासनं च deportation,
लवगे द्र य Hanuman's, मं च strain also, समी य considering, उ थातम
ु ् to rise up, अहर्िस you
ought to.

"You ought to rise up if you consider the nobility of the scion of the Kakusthas, the deportation
of Mythili, and the exertion put forth by Hanuman, the lord of monkeys".
िहर यनाभो मैनाको िनश य लवणा भसः।।5.1.101।।

उ पपात जला तूणर्ं महाद्रम

िहर यनाभः mountain with gold at its bosom, मैनाकः Mainaka, लवणा भसः of the salty ocean,
िनश य after listening, महाद्रम
ु लतायुतः with great trees and creepers, तूणम
र् ् at once, जलात ् from
the water, उ पपात rose up.

Hearing the command of the god of the ocean, mount Mainaka, rich in gold and covered with
trees and creepers rose up at once from the water.
स सागरजलं िभ वा बभव
ू ा युि थत तदा।।5.1.102।।

यथा जलधरं िभ वा दी तरि मिदर् वाकरः।

तदा then, सः that mountain, सागरजलम ् waters of the ocean, िभ वा projecting, दी तरमिशः the
lord of glowing rays, िदवाकरः Sun, जलधरम ् a cloud, िभ वा breaking, यथा as, अ युि थतः rose
up, बभव
ू appeared.

Just as the rising Sun comes out with glowing rays tearing the veil of dark clouds, the mountain
rose up from the water of the ocean.
स महा मा मह ु ू तन सवर्तः सिललावत
ृ ः।।5.1.103।।

दशर्यामास शङ्
ृ गािण सागरे ण िनयोिजतः।

आिद योदयसङ्काशैरािलखिद्भिरवा बरम ्।

ृ गैः सिक नरमहोरगैः।।5.1.104।।

सिक नरमहोरगैः with nagas and kinnaras, आिद योदयसङ्काशैः resembling the rising Sun, सवर्तः
all over, सिललावत
ृ : submerged by water, अ बरम ् sky, आिलखिद्भ: as if scraping the sky, इव like
that, शातकु भमयैः golden, शङ्
ृ गैः with peak, सवर्तः all over, सिललावत
ृ ः covered with water, सः
महा मा the great mountain, सागरे ण the ocean's, िनयोिजतः ordered, मह

mountain peak, दशर्यामास was seen.

At the instance of Varuna, (the presiding deity of the ocean) the lofty mountain appeared,
projecting its peaks, hitherto submerged in the water. The golden peaks inhabited by nagas and
kinnaras resemmbled the rising Sun as though scraping the sky in a moment.
त तजा बन ू दै ः शङ्
ृ गैः पवर्त य समिु थतैः।।5.1.105।।

आकाशं श त्रसङ्काशमभव का चनप्रभम ्।

समिु थतैः by those risen ones, त तजा बन


ू दै ः by barnished gold, पवर्त य mountain's, शङ्
ृ गैः with
peaks, श त्रसंकाशम ् the colour of weapons, आकाशम ् sky, का चनप्रभम ्, golden, अभवत ् appeared.

The sky shone like barnished weapons smeared with the golden colour of the
mountain peaks that rose up above the water.
जात पमयैः शङ्
ृ गैभ्रार्जमानैः वयंप्रभैः।।5.1.106।।

आिद यशतसङ्काशः सोऽभव िगिरस तमः।

वयंप्रभैः the selfeffulgent ones, भ्राजमानैः glittering , जात पमयैः golden, शङ्
ृ गैः by the peak, सः
that, िगिरस तमः noble mountain, आिद यशतसङ्काशः like a thousand Suns, अभवत ् appeared.

The noble mountain, Mainaka was glittering like a thousand Suns with selfeffulgent golden
peaks shining.
तमिु थतमसङ्गेन हनम ु ानग्रतः ि थतम ्।।5.1.107।।

म ये लवणतोय य िवघ्नोऽयिमित िनि चतः।

लवणतोय य of the seawater, म ये in the midst, असङ्गेन impediment across, उि थतम ् rising up,
अग्रतः in front, ि थतम ् stood, तम ् him, हनम
ु ान ् Hanuman, अयम ् this, िवघ्नः obstruction, इित
thus, िनि चतः surely.

Hanuman considered the mountain rising up in the midst of the ocean and standing in front an
impediment.
स तमु रतम यथर्ं महावेगो महाकिपः।।5.1.108।।

उरसा पातयामास जीमत


ू िमव मा तः।

महावेगः swift in action, सः महाकिपः that great vanara, अ यथर्म ् instantly, उि छ्रतम ् risen, तम ्
him, मा तः the wind, जीमत
ू िमव like a cloud, उरसा with the chest, पातयामास pushed it down.

The great vanara,who was swift in action felled down the mountain that had risen high instantly
with his chest just as the wind would strike a cloud.
स तथा पाितत तेन किपना पवर्तो तमः।।5.1.109।।

बु वा त य कपेवगं जहषर् च नन द च।

तेन किपना by that vanara, तथा in that way, पािततः felled down, स पवर्तो तमः that high
mountain, त य कपेः by the vanara's, वेगम ् speed, बु वा after realising, जहषर् च felt happy, नन द
च and roared in high pitch.
Felled by the vanara's speed, the tall mountain overwhelmed with joy roared in high pitch.
तमाकाशगतं वीरमाकाशे समप ु ि थतः।।5.1.110।।

प्रीतो टमाना वाक्यमब्रवी पवर्तः किपम ्।

मानुषं धारयन ् पमा मनः िशखरे ि थतः।।5.1.111।।

पवर्तः mountain, प्रीतः feeling happy, टमानाः gladly, मानष


ु म ् human, पम ् form, धारयन ्
assuming, आ मनः his, िशखरे on the summit, ि थतः standing, आकाशगतम ् gone to the aerial
region, तं वीरं किपम ् that heroic vanara, आकाशे in the sky, समप
ु ि थतः stood, वाक्यम ् these
words, अब्रवीत ् said.

Now the mountain assumed a human form and standing on its own summit, which stood very
high, and glad at heart, addressed the heroic vanara gone to the aerial region.
द ु करं कृतवा कमर् विमदं वानरो तम।

िनप य मम शङ्
ृ गेषु िव म व यथासख
ु म ्।।5.1.112।।

वानरो तम O best of the vanaras, वम ् you, द ु करम ् formidable, इदम ् this, कमर् deed, कृतवान ्
accomplished, मम my, शङ्
ृ गेषु on this peak, िनप य alighting, यथासख
ु म ् comfortably, िव म व
you may rest.

"O best of vanaras you have achieved a formidable deed. Alighting on my peak and
comfortably resting awhile, you may resume your journey.
राघव य कुले जातै दिधः पिरविधर्तः।

स वां रामिहते यक्


ु तं प्र यचर्यित सागरः।।5.1.113।।

उदिधः the ocean, राघव य of Raghava's, कुले in the family, जातैः by those born, पिरविधर्तः is
extended, सः सागरः that Sagara, रामिहते for the service of Rama, युक्तम ् endowed with, वाम ्
you, प्र यचर्यित honour in return.

"The son of Rama's family, Sagara, has extended the ocean in the past.It is most appropriate that
he (the god of the sea) honours you in return as you have set out in the service of Rama.
कृते च प्रितकतर् यमेष धमर्ः सनातनः।

सोऽयं व प्रितकाराथीर् व तः स मानमहर्ित।।5.1.114।।

कृते when help is rendered, प्रितकतर् यम ् it should be repaid, एषः this, सनातनः eternal, धमर्ः
dharma, त प्रितकाराथीर् for doing service in return, सः अयम ् this, व तः from you, स मानम ्
honour, अहर्ित he deserves.

वि निम तमनेनाहं बहुमाना प्रचोिदतः।

ित ठ वं किपशादर् ल
ू मिय िव य ग यताम ्।।5.1.115।।

तव सानुषु िव ा तः शेषं प्रक्रमतािमित।

योजनानां शतं चािप किपरे ष समा लत


ु ः।।5.1.116।।

योजनानां शतम ् a hundred yojanas, समा लत


ु ः is leaping, एषः this, किपः vanara, तव your, सानुषु
on the peaks, िव ा तः resting, शेषम ् remaining, प्रक्रमताम proceed thereafter, इित thus, अनेन by
this ocean, वि निम तम for your sake, अहम ् I, बहुमानात ् with honour, प्रचोिदतः prompted,
किपशादर् ल
ू : a tiger among monkeys, वम ् you, ित ठ stay, मिय at my, िव य after resting,
ग यताम ् you can go.

"I was prompted by the ocean for your sake since he has great regard for you. O great monkey
you may rest here for a while and continue your journey. The lord of the ocean feels that this
tiger among monkeys can cover the distance of a hundred yojanas. He tells me, 'let him rest on
your peak and then cover the rest of the distance'.
तिददं ग धव वाद ु क दमल ू फलं बहु।

तदा वा य हिर े ठ िव ा तोऽनु गिम यिस।।5.1.117।।

हिर े ठ O foremost of the monkeys, तत ् इदम ् such as this, ग धवत ् sweet smelling, वाद ु tasty,
बहु plenty, क दमल ू फलम ् roots and fruits, इदम ् this, तत ् that, आ व य after tasting, िव ा तः
taking rest, अनु later, गिम यिस you may go.
"O foremost of the monkeys after eating plenty of sweet and tasty roots and fruits and resting a
while you may go.
अ माकमिप स ब ध: किपमख् ु य वयाि त वै।

प्रख्याति त्रषु लोकेषु महागण


ु पिरग्रहः।।5.1.118।।

किपमख्
ु य O chief of monkeys, ित्रषु in the three, लोकेषु in the worlds, प्रख्यातः wellknown,
महागण
ु पिरग्रहः possesing great merits, स ब धः kinship, वया with you, अ माकमिप for us also,
अि त वै is there.

"O chief of monkeys, indeed we too have a relationship with you based on merit which is
wellknown to all the three worlds.
वेगव तः लव तो ये लवगा मा ता मज।

तेषां मख्
ु यतमं म ये वामहं किपकु जर।।5.1.119।।

मा ता मज O son of the Windgod, किपकु जर O elephant among monkeys, वेगव तः swift,


लव तः jumping, ये those, लवगाः vanaras, तेषाम ् of them, मख्
ु यतमम ् the foremost, वाम ् you,
अहम ् I, म ये believe.

"O son of the Windgod you are an elephant among monkeys, the foremost among them who
move at a high speed.
अितिथः िकल पज ू ाहर्ः प्राकृतोऽिप िवजानता।

धमर्ं िजज्ञासमानेन िकं पुन वा शो महान ्।।5.1.120।।

धमर्म ् righteousness, िजज्ञासमानेन who desires to know, िवजानता by a wise man, प्राकृतोऽिप even
ू ाहर्ः worthy of worship, वा शः a person like you, महान ्
an ordinary person, अितिथः a guest, पज
great, िकं पन
ु ः what again, िकल it is said.

"Even a newcomer, however ordinary, deserves worship by a wise man who wishes to educate
himself in the path of righteousness. Needless to say that distinguished guest like you deserves
all reverence.
वं िह दे वविर ठ य मा त य महा मनः।

पुत्र त यैव वेगेन स शः किपकु जर।।5.1.121।।

किपकु जर foremost among vanaras, वम ् you, दे वविर ठ य of the pre eminent one among the
divine beings, महा मनः of the highsouled, मा त य wind god's, पुत्रः िह son indeed, वेगेन in
speed, त यैव with his own self, स शः comparable.

"O foremost among the vanaras you are the son of the highsouled Windgod's, preeminent among
the gods, you are also equal to him in speed.
पिू जते विय धमर्ज्ञ पज
ू ां प्रा नोित मा तः।

त मा वं पूजनीयो मे शण
ृ ु चा यत्र कारणम ्।।5.1.122।।

धमर्ज्ञ O knower of righteousness, विय when you, पिू जते if you are worshipped, मा तः
Windgod, पज
ू ाम ् veneration, प्रा नोित will recieve, त मात ् therefore, वम ् you, अिप also, मे to
me, पूजनीयः worshipworthy, अत्र here, कारणं च also the cause, शण
ृ ु listen.

"O knower of righteousness to worship you is to honour the Windgod. Therefore you are worthy
of worship for me. I will tell you the reason. Listen.
पूवर्ं कृतयुगे तात पवर्ताः पिक्षणोऽभवन ्।

ते िह जग्मिु दर् शः सवार् ग डािनलवेिगनः।।5.1.123।।

तात O dear son, पूवम


र् ् formerly, कृतयुगे in Krita yuga, पवर्ताः mountains,पिक्षणः had wings,
अभवन ् endowed, ते they, ग डािनलवेिगनः swift like Garuda and wind, सवार्ः all, िदशः directions,
जग्मःु went about.

"Formerly in Kritayuga, O dear, mountains were endowed with wings. They used to move
speedily in all directions like Garuda and the Windgod.
तत तेषु प्रयातेषु दे वसङ्घा: महिषर्िभः।

भत
ू ािन च भयं जग्मु तेषां पतनशङ्कया।5.1.124।।

ततः then, तेषु when they, प्रयातेषु went about, सहिषर्िभः and sages, दे वसङ्घा: hosts of gods, भत
ू ािन
च and all creatures, तेषाम ् their, पतनशङ्कया out of fear of their falling down, भयम ् fear, जग्मःु
felt.

"When they moved about, even hosts of sages, gods and creatures panicked for fear of falling
down (and destroying all worlds).
ततः क्रुद्धः सह ाक्षः पवर्तानां शतक्रतुः।

पक्षान ् िच छे द वज्रेण तत्र तत्र सह शः।।5.1.125।।

ततः then, शतक्रतुः one who has performed a hundred yajnas, सह ाक्षः Indra, क्रुद्धः in
anger, तत्र तत्र here and there, सह शः in thousand, पवर्तानाम ् of the mountains, पक्षान ् wings,
वज्रेण with the thunderbolt, िच छे द cut into pieces.

"Provoked at this, the thousandeyed Indra who had performed a hundred sacrifices cut off the
wings of mountains into a thousands pieces with his thunderbolt.
स मामपु ागतः क्रुद्धो वज्रमु य य दे वरा ।

ततोऽहं सहसा िक्ष तः वसनेन महा मना।।5.1.126।।

सः he, दे वरा Indra, क्रुद्धः in wrath, वज्रम ् thunderbolt, उ य य held, माम ् to me, उपागतः came,
ततः then, अहम ् I, महा मना by the great self, वसनेन by the Windgod, सहसा at once, िक्ष तः
dropped down.

अि म लवणतोये च प्रिक्ष तः लवगो तम।

गु तपक्षसमग्र च तव िपत्रािभरिक्षतः।।5.1.127।।

लवगो तम O distinguished among the vanaras, गु तपक्षसमग्र च kept my wings intact, अि मन ्


in this, लवणतोये in the salt waters of the sea, प्रिक्ष तः thrown down, तव िपत्रा by your father,
अिभरिक्षतः protected.

"O distinguished vanara your father, the Windgod threw me down into this saltwater sea. Thus
my wings were protected.
ततोऽहं मानयािम वां मा यो िह मम मा तः।

वया मे येष स ब धः किपमख्


ु य महागण
ु ः।।5.1.128।।
किपमख्
ु य O esteemed vanara, मा तः Windgod, मम my, मा यः िह revered one, ततः therefore,
अहम ् I, वाम ् you, मानयािम I will honour you, वया by you, मे to me, एषः this, स ब धः
relationship, महागण
ु ः is great.

"O esteemed vanara the Windgod is revered by me and so I honour you. O chief of monkeys, my
bondage with you is therefore of high value to me, indeed.
अि म नेवंगते काय सागर य ममैव च।

प्रीितं प्रीतमनाः कतुर्ं वमहर्िस महाकपे।।5.1.129।।

महाकपे O great monkey, अि मन ् in this, काय work, एवंगते reached such a position, वम ् you,
प्रीतमनाः wholeheartedly, सागर य च and the ocean's, ममैव च and mine also, प्रीितम ् pleasure,
कतम
ुर् ् to do, अहर्िस you ought to.

"O great monkey when I hold you so high, you ought to oblige me and the (god of the) ocean
wholeheartedly (and accept our hospitalty).
मं मोक्षय पज
ू ां च गह
ृ ाण किपस तम।

प्रीितं च बहुम य व प्रीतोऽि म तव दशर्नात ्।।5.1.130।।

किपस तम O noble monkey, मम ् fatigue, मो य after being relieved, पज


ू ां च and offerings,

ृ ाण accept, प्रीितम ् love, बहुम य व oblige us, तव your, दशर्नात ् by your presence, प्रीतः अि म I
am pleased.

"O noble monkey oblige us by accepting our offering given with love and be relieved of your
fatigue. Your presence itself is welcome to me".
एवमक्ु तः किप े ठ तं नगो तममब्रवीत ्।

प्रीतोऽि म कृतमाित यं म युरेषोऽपनीयताम ्।।5.1.131।।

एवम ् in that way, उक्तः having addressed, किप े ठः the great monkey, तं नगो तमम ् to the lord of
mountains, अब्रवीत ् said, प्रीतः pleased, अि म I am, आित यम ् hospitality, कृतम ् is offered, एषः
this, म यःु unhappiness, अपनीयताम ् remove.
The great Hanuman, pleased with the words of Mainaka, said "I am pleased at your
hospitality. Remove your unhappiness.
वरते कायर्कालो मे अह चा यितवतर्ते।

प्रितज्ञा च मया द ता न थात यिमहा तरे ।।5.1.132।।

मे to me, कायर्कालः schedule, वरते hastens, अहः च the day also, अितवतर्ते exceeds, मया by me,
प्रितज्ञा vow, द ता च is made, अ तरे in between, इह here, न थात यम ् I will not halt.

"My commitment is hastening me. The day set (for the accomplishment of the task) is also
drawing to a close. A vow is made and I will not halt in the middle of my work."
इ युक् वा पािणना शैलमाल य हिरपुङ्गवः।

जगामाकाशमािव य वीयर्वान ् प्रहसि नव।।5.1.133।।

वीयर्वान ् heroic, हिरपुङ्गवः chief of monkeys, इित thus, उक् वा having spoken, शैलम ् the
mountain, पािणना with his hand, आल य gently touching, आकाशम ् to the sky, आिव य ascended,
प्रहसि नव with a smile on his face, जगाम departed.

Having said this, the mighty monkey gently touched the mountain with his hands before
ascending to the sky with a smile on his face.
स पवर्तसमद्र
ु ा यां बहुमानादवेिक्षतः।

पूिजत चोपप नािभराशीिभर्रिनला मजः।।5.1.134।।

सः he, अिनला मजः son of the Windgod, पवर्तसमद्र


ु ा याम ् by both the mountain and ocean,
बहुमानात ् with great respect, आवेिक्षतः was adored, उपप नािभः with proper ones, आशीिभर्ः with
blessings, पिू जतः च also honoured.

The mountain and the sea honoured and adored the son of the Windgod and gave him
appropriate blessings.
अथो वर्ं दरू मु लु य िह वा शैलमहाणर्वौ।

िपतुः प थानमा थाय जगाम िवमलेऽ बरे ।।5.1.135।।


अथ then, शैलमहाणर्वौ the mountain and the ocean, िह वा after leaving, ऊ वर्म ् high, दरू म ् long
distance, उ लु य leaping into, िवमले in the clear, अ बरे in sky, िपतुः father's, प थानम ् the path,
आ थाय after taking, जगाम went.

And thereafter leaping a long distance into the clear sky, he (Hanuman) took the path of the
Windgod, his father, leaving behind the mountain and the sea.

ू चो वर्ं गितं प्रा य िगिरं तमवलोकयन ्।

वायुसन ू ः च further, ऊ वर्म ् high up, गितम ् path, प्रा य taking, तं िगिरम ्
ू ुः son of the Windgod, भय
the mountain, अवलोकयन ् while looking at, िनराल बे in a place without any support, िवमले pure,
cloudless, अ बरे in the sky, जगाम went.

Rising higher and further up and looking at the mountain (which was going down into the
ocean), the son of the Windgod coursed through the cloudless sky unsupported.
त िवतीयं हनम ु तो वा कमर् सद
ु ु करम ्।

प्रशशंसःु सरु ाः सव िसद्धा च परमषर्यः।।5.1.137।।

हनम
ु तः of Hanuman, तत ् that, सद
ु ु करम ् most difficult, िवतीयम ् a second, कमर् task, वा on
seeing, सव all, सरु ाः gods, िसद्धा च siddhas, परमषर्यः great sages, प्रशंशसःु praised him.

Gods, siddhas as well as the great sages praised him for the second great achievment of
Hanuman, which is impossible for others to accomplish.
दे वता चाभवन ् टा तत्र था त य कमर्णा।

का चन य सन
ु ाभ य सह ाक्ष च वासवः।।5.1.138।।

तत्र थाः those who were there, दे वता च gods, सह ाक्षः the thousandeyed, वासव च Indra,
का चन य of the golden Mainaka, त य his, सन
ु ाभ य of Sunabha, कमर्णा by the task, टाः
delighted, अभवन ् became.

The gods who happened to be present at that time (on the mountain) and the thousandeyed Indra
were delighted by the gesture of golden Sunabha (Mainaka) mountain.
उवाच वचनं धीमान ् पिरतोषा सग गदम ्।

ु ाभं पवर्त े ठं वयमेव शचीपितः।।5.1.139।।

धीमान ् wise, शचीपितः husband of Sachi, Indra, पवर्त े ठम ् best mountain, सन


ु ाभम ् Sunabha,
पिरतोषात ् satisfied, सग गदम ् with throat choked, वयमेव himself, वचनम ् these words, उवाच
spoke.

Indra, the lord of Sachi, was personally satisfied and spoke to Mainaka, the best of mountains, in
faltering tone, his throat choked out of joy.
िहर यनाभ शैले द्र पिरतु टोऽि म ते भश ृ म ्।

अभयं ते प्रय छािम ित ठ सौ य यथासख


ु म ्।।5.1.140।।

िहर यनाभ O Hiranyanabha, शैले द्र O lord of mountains, ते with you, भश


ृ म ् a lot, पिरतु टः अि म
I am pleased, सौ य O pious one, ते to you, अभयम ् security, प्रय छािम I give, यथासख
ु म ् happily
as you please, ित ठ you may stay on.

"O Hiranyanabha, the foremost among the mountains I am highly pleased with you. I give you
security (free from fear of losing wings). O pious one you may stay on happily as you please.
सा यं कृतं ते समु ह िवक्रा त य हनम ू तः।

क्रमतो योजनशतं िनभर्य य भये सित।।5.1.141।।

िवक्रा त य of one attempting to leap, योजनशतम ् a hundred yojanas, क्रमतः while leaping, भये
सित when there is reason to fear, िनभर्य य of a fearless one, हनम
ू तः Hanuman, ते by you, सम
ु हत ्
very valuable, सा यम ् help, कृतम ् rendered.

"You have rendered very valuable help to Hanuman who was attempting to leap a distance of a
hundred yojanas. He is fearless even when there is reason to fear (of falling down).
राम यैष िहतायैव याित दाशरथेहर्िरः।

सि क्रयां कुवर्ता त य तोिषतोऽि म ढं वया।।5.1.142।।

एषः हिरः this vanara, दाशरथेः of the son of Dasaratha, राम य Rama's, िपतायैव for his wellbeing
only, याित going, त य his, सि क्रयाम ् honour, कुवर्ता for doing, वया by you, ढम ् surely, तोिषतः
अि म I am pleased.

"The vanara has gone on a mission to help the son of Dasaratha. I am highly pleased with the
service rendered to him.
ततः प्रहषर्मगम िवपल ु ं पवर्तो तमः।

दे वतानां पितं वा पिरतु टं शतक्रतुम ्।।5.1.143।।

तत: thereafter, पवर्तो तमः the best of mountains, दे वतानाम ् of gods,पितम ् lord, शतक्रतम
ु ् who had
performed a hundred yajnas, Indra, पिरतु टम ् extremely happy, वा after seeing, िवपल
ु म ् very
much, प्रहषर्म ् delight, आगमत ् experienced.

Thereafter Mainaka, the great mountain was delighted to see Indra, lord of the gods, performer of
a hundred yajnas satisfied.
स वै द तवरः शैलो बभव ू ावि थत तदा।

ु ू तन यितचक्राम सागरम ्।।5.1.144।।

तदा then, द तवरः who received a boon, सः he, शैलः Mainaka, अवि थतः he became stable, बभव

ु ू तन in a short while, सागरम ् ocean, यितचक्राम crossed over.

Then mount Mainaka, assured by Indra became secure. And Hanuman also crossed over the
ocean in a short while.
ततो दे वाः सग धवार्ः िसद्धा च परमषर्यः।

र् ङ्काशां सरु सां नागमातरम ्।।5.1.145।।

ततः then, सग धवार्ः including gandharvas, दे वाः gods, िसद्धा च and siddhas, परमषर्यः great sages,

र् ङ्काशाम ् shining like the Sun, नागमातरम ् mother of nagas, सरु साम ् Surasa, अब्रुवन ् said.

Then the gods, gandharvas, siddhas and great sages approached Surasa, the mother of nagas, who
was glowing like the Sungod and said:.
अयं वाता मजः ीमा लवते सागरोपिर।

हनुमा नाम त य वं मह
ु ू तर्ं िवघ्नमाचर।।5.1.146।।
राक्षसं पमा थाय सघ
ु ोरं पवर्तोपमम ्।

दं ट्राकरालं िपङ्गाक्षं वक्त्रं कृ वा नभः समम ्।।5.1.147।।

ु नाम named Hanuman, ीमान ् glorious, अयं this person, वाता मजः son of the Windgod,
सागरोपिर over the sea, लवते is flying, वम ् you, सघ

mountain, राक्षसम ् demoniac, पम ् form, आ थाय assuming, दं ट्राकरालम ् with big teeth,

िपङ्गाक्षम ् yellowbrown eyes, नभः समम ् like the sky, वक्त्रम ् mouth, कृ वा doing, मह र् ् for a
short while, त य him, िवघ्नम ् obstruction, आचर make.

"The glorious son of the Windgod, called Hanuman, is crossing the ocean. Obstruct him for
sometime by assuming the hideous form of a demon, gigantic as a mountain, fearful with
yellowishbrown eyes, with big teeth and a wide mouth like the sky.
बलिम छामहे ज्ञातंु भय
ू चा य पराक्रमम ्।

वां िवजे य युपायेन िवषादं वा गिम यित।।5.1.148।।

अ य his, बलम ् strength, भय


ू ः once again, पराक्रमं च and valour, उपायेन intelligence वाम ् you,
िवजे यित he will win, वा or else, िवषादम ् dejected, गिम यित will give way, ज्ञातम
ु ् to know,
इ छामहे we wish.

"We want to assess his strength, valour and intelligence once again. We wish to know whether
he will win or give way to despondency".
एवमक्
ु ता तु सा दे वी दै वतैरिभस कृता।

ु म ये सरु सा िबभ्रती राक्षसं वपःु ।।5.1.149।।

िवकृतं च िव पं च सवर् य च भयावहम ्।

दे वी the divine being, सा सरु सा Surasa, दै वतैः by gods, एवम ् that way, उक्ता having been
addressed, अिभस कृता received their honour, समद्र
ु म ये in the midst of the ocean, िवकृतम ्
terrific, िव पं च ugly form, सवर् य for all, भयावहम ् frightening, राक्षसं वपुः demoniac form, िबभ्रती
put up, लवमानम ् leaping, हनूम तम ् Hanuman, आव ृ य after encirding him, इदम ् these words,
उवाच ह said.

Thus honoured by the gods, Surasa assumed a terrific ugly form frightening to all and stood in
the midst of the ocean. Putting up a distorted appearance and encompassing Hanuman who was
crossing the ocean, she spoke to him:
मम भक्षः प्रिद ट वमी वरै वार्नरषर्भ।

अहं वां भक्षिय यािम प्रिवशेदं ममाननम ्।।5.1.151।।

वानरषर्भ O bull among, वम ् you, ई वरै ः by lords of the universe, मम to me, भक्षः food, प्रिद टः
are provided, अहम ् I, वाम ् you, भक्षिय यािम I will eat you, इदम ् this, मम my, आननम ्
mouth, प्रिवश enter.

"O bull among vanaras the lords of the universe have provided you as food for me. I will eat you.
Enter my mouth".
ु तः सरु सया प्रा जिलवार्नरषर्भः।
एवमक्

प्र टवदनः ीमािनदं वचनमब्रवीत ्।।5.1.152।।

सरु सया by Surasa,एवम ् In that way, उक्तः spoken, ीमान ् glorious, वानरषर्भः वहतत bull among
vanaras, प्र टवदनः with a blooming face, प्रा जिलः with folded hands, इदं वचनम ् these words,
अब्रवीत ् said.

Thus addressed by Surasa, the glorious Hanuman said this with a blooming face and folded
hands:
रामो दाशरिथनार्म प्रिव टो द डकावनम ्।

ल मणेन सह भ्रात्रा वैदे या चािप भायर्या।।5.1.153।।

दाशरिथः Dasaratha's son, रामो नाम called Rama, भ्रात्रा with his brother, ल मणेन सह
accompanied by Lakshmana, भायर्या with his wife, वैदे या चािप with Vaidehi also, द डकावनम ्
Dandaka forest, प्रिव टः entered.

"Dasaratha's son called Rama accompanied by his brother Lakshmana and his wife Vaidehi
entered Dandaka forest.
अ यकायर्िवषक्त य बद्धवैर य राक्षसैः।

त य सीता ता भायार् रावणेन यशि वनी।।5.1.154।।

राक्षसैः with rakshasas, बद्धवैर य deeprooted enmity, त य his, अ यकायर्िवषक्त य while he was
engaged in some other work, यशि वनी a glorious lady, भायार् wife, सीता Sita, रावणेन by Ravana,
ता was abducted.

"While Rama was engaged otherwise, his glorious wife Sita was abducted by Ravana actuated by
deeprooted enmity of demons with him.
त याः सकाशं दतू ोऽहं गिम ये रामशासनात ्।

कतम
ुर् हर्िस राम य सा यं िवषयवािसिन।।5.1.155।।

अहम ् I, रामशासनात ् by Rama's command, दत


ू ः emissary, त याः her, सकाशम ् for, गिम ये I shall
go, िवषयवािसिन O resident of his kingdom, राम य of Rama, सा यम ् help, कतम
ुर् ् to render, अहर्िस
it proper for you.

"I am going as Rama's emissary to search for his wife. It is proper for you to render help since
you are a resident of his kingdom.
अथवा मैिथलीं वा रामं चािक्ल टकािरणम ्।

आगिम यािम ते वक्त्रं स यं प्रितशण


ृ ोिम ते।।5.1.156।।

अथवा alternatively, मैिथलीम ् Mythili, अिक्ल टकािरणम ् one who may makes work easy (without
any trouble), रामं च and Rama, वा after seeing, ते to your, वक्त्रम ् mouth, आगिम यािम I will
reach, स यम ् truly, ते you, प्रितशण
ृ ोिम I promise.

एवमक्
ु ता हनम
ु ता सरु सा काम िपणी।

अब्रवी नाितवत मां कि चदे ष वरो मम।।5.1.157।।

हनुमता by Hanuman, एवम ् in that way, उक्ता having been spoken, काम िपणी one who can
assume any form at free will, सरु सा Surasa, अब्रवीत ् said, कि चत ् no one, नाितवतत cannot cross,
एषः such, मम to me, वरः boon.

Having heard Hanuman, Surasa capable of taking any form at her free will told him that no one
can cross (her region) as she had been given such a boon(by the
Creator)৷৷
तं प्रया तं समु वी य सरु सा वाक्यमब्रवीत ्।

बलं िजज्ञासमाना वै नागमाता हनूमतः।।5.1.158।।

नागमाता mother of serpents, सरु सा Surasa, हनूमतः of Hanuman, बलम ् strength, िजज्ञासमाना वै
desirous of knowing, प्रया तम ् who was attempting to go away, तम ् her, समु वी य observing,
वाक्यम ् these words, अब्रवीत ् said.

Surasa, mother of serpents, observing that Hanuman was attempting to escape, said this in order
to gauge his strength:
प्रिव य वदनं मेऽ य ग त यं वानरो तम।

वर एष पुरा द तो मम धात्रेित स वरा।।5.1.159।।

यादाय िवपल
ु ं वक्त्रं ि थता सा मा तेः पुरः।

वानरो तम O best of the vanaras, अ य today, मे my, वदनम ् face (mouth), प्रिव य after entering,
ग त यम ् you may go, एषः वरः such a boon, पुरा past, मम to me, धात्रा by Brahma, द तः is given,
इित thus, स वरा quickly, िवपुलम ् wide, वक्त्रम ् mouth, यादाय opened, सा she, मा तेः vanara's,
पुरः front, ि थता stood.

"O best vanara you must pass through my mouth today. Such is the boon granted to me by
Brahma in the past". Then she quickly opened her big mouth and stood.
एवमक्
ु तः सरु सया क्रुद्धो वानरपुङ्गवः।।5.1.160।।

अब्रवी कु वै वक्त्रं येन मां िवषिह यसे।

सरु सया by Surasa, एवम ् in that way, उक्तः having been spoken to, वानरपुङ्गवः supreme vanara,
क्रुद्धः got angry, अब्रवीत ् he said, वक्त्रम ् mouth, कु वै open, येन in such a way, माम ् me,
िवषिह यसे you can bear me.

Thus addressed by Surasa, Hanuman the supreme vanara said, "Open your mouth wide enough
to hold me."
इ यक्
ु वा सरु सां क्रुद्धो धशयोजनमायता।।5.1.161।।

दशयोजनिव तारो बभव


ू हनुमां तदा।

तदा then, हनम


ु ान ् Hanuman, सरु सां Surasa, इित thus, उक् वा having said, क्रुद्धः angry, दशयोजनम ्
ten yojanas, आयतां wide, दशयोजनिव तारः ten yojanas in breadth, बभव
ू became.

Provoked by the words of Surasa, Hanuman stretched himself to ten yojanas.


तं वा मेघसङ्काशं दशयोजनमायतम ्।।5.1.162।।

चकार सरु सा चा यं िवंश योजनमायतम ्।

दशयोजनम ् ten yojanas, आयतम ् wide, मेघसङ्काशम ् like a cloud, तम ् him, वा after seeing,
सरु सा च Surasa too, आ यम ् her mouth, िवंश योजनम ् twenty yojanas, आयतम ् wide, चकार
stretched.

Seeing his body stretched to ten yojanas like a cloud, Surasa also widened her mouth to twenty
yojanas.
हनमु ां तु ततः क्रुद्धि त्रंश योजनमायतः।।5.1.163।।

चकार सरु सा वक्त्रं च वािरंश तथोि छ्रतम ्।

ू हनम
बभव ु ावनीरः प चाश योजनोि छ्रतः।।5.1.164।।

ततः then, हनुमां तु Hanuman also, क्रुद्धः in anger, ित्रंश योजनम ् thirty yojanas, आयतः wide, सरु सा
Surasa, तथा like that, वक्त्रम ् mouth, च वािरंशम ् forty yojanas, उि छ्रतम ् high, चकार did, वीरः
hero, हनुमान ् Hanuman, प चाश योजनोि छ्रतः fifty yojanas high, बभव
ू became.

Provoked, Hanuman further stretched his body to thirty yojanas and Surasa on her own enlarged
her mouth to forty yojanas. Then the great hero Hanuman stretched his
body to fifty yojanas.
चकार सरु सा वक्त्रं षि टयोजनमायतम ्।

तथैव हनुमावनीरः स ततीयोजनोि छ्रतः।।5.1.165।।

सरु सा Surasa, वक्त्रम ् mouth, षि टयोजनम ् sixty yojanas, आयतम ् wide, चकार did, वीरः heroic,
हनुमान ् Hanuman, तथैव in the same way, स ततीयोजनोि छ्रतः increased to seventy yojanas.

Surasa widened her mouth sixty yojanas and then the heroic Hanuman enlarged himself to
seventy yojanas.
चकार सरु सा वक्त्रमशीतीयोजनायतम ्।

हनुमानचलप्रख्यो नवतीयोजनोि छ्रतः।।5.1.166।।

सरु सा Surasa, वक्त्रम ् mouth, अशीतीयोजनायतम ् eighty yojanas wide, चकार made, अचलप्रख्यः like
a mountain, हनम
ु ान ् Hanuman, नवतीयोजनोि छ्रतः ninety yojanas.

Surasa widened her mouth to eighy yojanas and the heroic Hanuman grew up to ninety yojanas,
looking like a mountain.
चकार सरु सा वक्त्रं शतयोजनमायतम ्

त ृ वा यािदतं वा यं वायुपुत्रः सब

Intelligent Hanuman observing Surasa's enlarged mouth open and dreadful like hell with a long
tongue, suddenly shrunk his body to the size of a thumb.
सोऽिभप याशु त वक्त्रं िन प य च महाबलः।

अ तिरक्षे ि थतः ीमािनदं वचनमब्रवीत ्।।5.1.168।।

ीमान ् glorious one, महाबलः mighty, सः he, आशु immediatly, त वक्त्रम ् her mouth, अिभप य got
in, िन प य च and got out, अ तिरक्षे in the sky, ि थतः stood, इदम ् this, वचनम ् word, अब्रवीत ्
spoke.

Glorious and mighty Hanuman quickly went into her mouth and got out and stood in the sky and
said:.
प्रिव टोऽि म िह ते वक्त्रं दाक्षायिण नमोऽ तु ते।

गिम ये यत्र वैदेही स यं चासी वर तव।।5.1.169।।

दाक्षायिण O dughter of Daksha, ते your, वक्त्रम ् mouth, प्रिव टः I have entered, अि म िह I am


indeed, ते to you, नमः salutations, अ तु may be, वैदेही Vaidhehi, यत्र wherever, गिम ये I will go,
तव your, वरः च boon also, स यम ् true, आसीत ् was.

"O Dakshayani I have indeed entered your mouth and your boon has come true (as nobody can
go against the boon of the Creator). Allow me to proceed in quest of Vaidhehi. My salutations to
you."
तं वा वदना मक्ु तं च द्रं राहुमख
ु ािदव।

अब्रवी सरु सा दे वी वेन पेण वानरम ्।।5.1.170।।

ु ात ् from the mouth of Rahu, च द्रिमव like the Moon, वदनात ् from the mouth, मक्
राहुमख ु तम ्
released, तं him, वानरम ् that vanara, वा seeing, सरु सा दे वी the divine Surasa, वेन in
her true, पेण form, अब्रवीत ् said.

Seeing Hanuman released out of her mouth like the Moon released from the mouth of Rahu,
Surasa assumed her true form and said:
अथर्िस यै हिर े ठ ग छ सौ य यथासख ु म ्।

समानय व वैदेहीं राघवेण महा मना।।5.1.171।।


सौ य O noble one, हिर े ठ O best of vanaras, अथर्िस यै for achieving your purpose, यथासख
ु म्
with pleasure, ग छ proceed, वैदेहीम ् Vaidehi, महा मना with the great self, राघवेण with Raghava,
समानय व unite.

"O noble vanara proceed happily to achieve your purpose. Go and unite Vaidehi with the noble
self, Raghava.

Witnessing Hanuman achieving a very difficult feat for the third time, all the living beings
applauded him saying "Well done, welldone".
स सागरमनाध ृ यम ये य व णालयम ्।

जगामाकाशमािव य वेगेन ग डोपमः।।5.1.173।।

वेगेन speedily, ग डोपमः like Garuda, सः he, अनाध ृ यम ् invincible, व णालयम ् abode of varuna,
सागरम ् ocean, अ ये य piercing through, आकाशम ् sky, आिव य coursing, जगाम went.

Rising above the invincible ocean, the abode of lord Varuna, Hanuman coursed through the sky
speedily like Garuda.
सेिवते वािरधारािभः पतगै च िनषेिवते।

चिरते कैिशकाचायरै रावतिनषेिवते।।5.1.174।।

thunderbolt, पावकैः by fires, उपशोिभते looking splendid, कृतपु यैः by those who have performed
meritorious deeds, महाभागैः by accomplished people, वगर्िजिद्भ: by those who conquered

inhabited by Vishvavasu, दे वराजगजाक्रा ते sporting ground for the elephant of Indra, च द्रसय

in the path of Moon and Sun, िशवे an auspicious place, जीवलोक य for the living beings,
ब्र मिनिमर्ते created by Brahma, िवतते extensive, िवताने canopy, वरै ः by the esteemed, वीरै ः by
heroes, िव याधरगणैः by Vidyadhara groups, बहुशः frequently, सेिवते attended by, वायुमाग the
path of wind, मा ितः Hanuman, ग मािनव like Garuda, जगाम went.

Hanuman passed through the path of wind like Garuda. The region was refreshed with clouds
that released torrents of rain and frequented by birds. The great masters of music (Tumburu,
Narada and Gandharvas) trained in Kasika moved there driven by lions, elephants, tigers, birds
and serpents and were moving in different aerial vehicles. It was splendid with god at fire who
strikes fiercely like thunderbolt. It was inhabited by great sages who had acquired merit. The
region was traversed by firegod who carried havis in large quantities earnestly. It was decorated
with planets, constellations, Moon, Sun and clusters of stars. It was filled with groups of greal
sages, gandharvas, nagas and yakshas. It was isolated part of the universe traversed by the king
of gandharvas like Vishvavasu. It was an auspicious path for Moon and Sun, a sporting ground
for Airavata, the vehicle of lord Indra. It was an extensive world of living beings created by
Brahma. It was frequented by many heroes ascending to heaven and blocked by vidyadharas.
प्र यमानः सवर्त्रः हनुमा मा ता मजः।

भेजेऽ बरं िनराल बं ल बपक्ष इवािद्ररा ।।5.1.181।।

सवर्त्र all over, प्र यमानः he appeared, मा ता मजः son of Windgod, हनम
ु ान ् Hanuman, ल बपक्षः
longwinged, अिद्ररा इव like king of mountains, िनराल बम ् unsupported, अ बरम ् the sky, भेजे
occupied.

Hanuman, son of the Windgod was seen everywhere in the sky. He appeared like a
longwinged king of mountains unsupported.
लवमानं तु तं वा िसंिहका नाम राक्षसी।

मनसा िच तयामास प्रवद्ध


ृ ा काम िपणी।।5.1.182।।

काम िपणी who can take any form at will, िसंिहका नाम called Simhika, राक्षसी demoness,
लवमानम ् him who was speeding in the sky, तम ् him, वा after seeing, प्रवद्ध
ृ ा expanded in
size, िच तयामास started thinking.

Seeing Hanuman speeding in the sky a demoness called Simhika who can assume any form at
her will had grown out of proportion and thought on her part:
अ य दीघर् य काल य भिव या यहमािशता।

इदं िह मे मह स वं िचर य वशमागतम ्।।5.1.183।।


िचर य after a long time, इदम ् this, महत ् great, स वम ् being, मे my, वशम ् fold, आगतम ् has
come, दीघर् य after a long, काल य time, अ य today, अहम ् I, आिशता satiated, भिव यािम I will
be.

इित सि च य मनसा छायाम य समािक्षपत ्।

छायायां ग ृ यमाणायां िच तयामास वानरः।।5.1.184।।

इित thus, मनसा in her mind, सि च य after thinking, अ य his, छायाम ् shadow, समािक्षपत ्
pulled, छायायाम ् when his shadow, ग ृ यमाणायाम ् was held, वानरः vanara, िच तयामास
deliberated.

Thinking thus, she dragged him by his shadow before she took hold of him, Hanuman started
deliberating within.
समािक्ष तोऽि म सहसा पङ्गक ू ृ तपराक्रमः।

प्रितलोमेन वातेन महानौिरव सागरे ।।5.1.185।।

सागरे in the ocean, प्रितलोमेन from the opposite side, वातेन by the wind, महानौिरव like a huge
ship, पङ्गक
ू ृ तपराक्रमः powerless, सहसा suddenly, समािक्ष तः caught, अि म I am.

"I am caught suddenly. I am handicapped.I am like a huge ship in an ocean retarded by the wind
blowing from the opposite direction.

ितयर्गू वर्मध चैव वीक्षमाण ततः किपः।


ददशर् स मह स वमिु थतं लवणा भिस।।5.1.186।।

ततः then, किपः monkey, ितयर्क् horizontally, ऊ र्वम ् upward, अथ चैव at the bottom level,
वीक्षमाणः while looking at, लवणा भिस in the salt sea, उि थतम ् risen up, महत ् huge, स वम ्
being, ददशर् saw.

Looking around, right and left, up and down, the monkey saw a huge being rise from the salty
sea.
तद्धृ वा िच तयामास मा ितिवर्कृताननम ्।
किपराजेन किथतं स वमद्भत
ु दशर्नम ्।।5.1.187।।
छायाग्रािह महावीयर्ं तिददं नात्र संशयः।

मा ितः Maruti, िवकृताननम ् hideous countenance, तत ् that creature, वा seeing, िच तयामास


reflected, किपराजेन by the king of monkeys, किथतम ् described, अद्भत
ु दशर्नम ् of wonderful
appearance, छायाग्रािह which can hold the shadow, महावीयर्म ् very powerful, तत ् that, स वम ्
creature, इदम ् this, अत्र here it is, संशयः doubt, न no.

Seeing the form with a hideous countenance, Hanuman reflected about the creature of ugly
appearance endowed with power which can catch a creature though his shadow, about which
king Sugriva had once told him. 'It is the same creature, no doubt', said
Hanuman.

स तां बु वाथर्त वेन िसंिहकां मितमा किपः।।5.1.188।।


यवधर्त महाकायः प्रावष
ृ ीव वलाहकः।

मितमान ् wise one, सः किपः Hanuman, ताम ् her, अथर्त वेन by her true nature, िसंिहकाम ् Simhika,
बु वा recognising, महाकायः huge bodied one, प्राविृ ष in rainy season, वलाहकः इव like a cloud,
यवधर्त grew.

Recognising the true nature of Simhika the clutcher of shadows, the wise Hanuman grew to a
huge size like a cloud in rainy season.

त य सा कायमु वी य वधर्मानं महाकपेः।।5.1.189।।


वक्त्रं प्रसारयामास पाताला तरसि नभम ्।

सा she, त य महाकपेः Hanuman's, कायम ् body, वधर्मानम ् growing, उ वी य after observing,


पाताला तरसि नभम ् like the depth of the underworld, वक्त्रम ् mouth, प्रसारयामास distended.

Observing the body of Hanuman growing in size, Simhika started distending her mouth wide like
the depth of the underworld.
घनराजीव गजर् ती वानरं समिभद्रवत ्।।5.1.190।।

ु म ्।
कायमात्रं च मेधावी ममार्िण च महाकिपः।।5.1.191।।

घनराजीव like a mass of heavy clouds, गजर् ती roaring, वानरम ् that vanara, समिभद्रवत ् ran
towards him, ततः then, मेधावी intelligent, महाकिपः Hanuman, त याः her, िववत
ृ म ् opened,
कायमात्रम ् body alone, सम
ु हत ् enormous, मख
ु म ् mouth, ममार्िण च vatal parts, सः he, ददशर् saw.

Roaring like a heavy mass of clouds, Simhika chased Hanuman. Intelligent Hanuman
observed her enormous mouth and noticed her vital parts.

स त या िववत
ृ े वक्त्रे वज्रसंहननः किपः।
संिक्ष य मह
ु ु रा मानं िन पपात महाबलः।।5.1.192।।

महाबलः strong one, वज्रसंहननः of thunderboltlike physique, सः किपः that vanara, आ मानम ्
himself, मह
ु ु ः once again, संिक्ष य contracted, त याः her, िववत
ृ े open, वक्त्रे in the mouth, िन पपात
entered.

Hanuman, the vanara whose physique was as hard as thunderbolt suddenly contracted once
again and entered her opened mouth.

आ ये त या िनम ज तं द शुः िसद्धचारणाः।


ग्र यमानं यथा च द्रं पूणर्ं पवर्िण राहुणा।।5.1.193।।

िसद्धचारणाः siddhas and charanas, त याः her, आ ये in the mouth, िनम ज तम ् drowning in,
पवर्िण on fullmoon day, राहुणा by Rahu, ग्र यमानम ् being seized, पूणम
र् ् full, च द्रं यथा like the
Moon, द शुः saw.

The siddhas and charanas who were watching his performance of drowning in her mouth were
amazed as though the moon is seized by Rahu on a fullmoon night.

तत त या नखै ती णैमम
र् ार् यु कृ य वानरः।
उ पपाताथ वेगेन मनः स पातिवक्रमः।।5.1.194।।
ततः thay, वानरः vanara, ती णैः with sharp, नखैः with nails, त याः her, ममार्िण private vital parts,
उ कृ य after tearing, अथ then, मनः स पातिवक्रमः with the speed of mind in action, वेगेन
quickly, उ पपात rushed out.

The vanara who had the speed of mind tore her vital parts with his sharp nails and rushed out
quickly before she closed her mouth.

तां तु वा च ध ृ या च दािक्ष येन िनपा य च।


स किपप्रवरो वेगा ववध
ृ े पुनरा मवान ्।।5.1.195।।

आ मवान ् selfcontrolled, सः he, किपप्रवरः great monkey, ताम ् her, वा च after seeing, ध ृ या च
with firmness of mind, दािक्ष येन with ingenuity, िनपा य thrown down, पुनः again, वेगात ् rapidly,
ववध
ृ े grew in size.

Self-controlled Hanuman, the great monkey acting with firmness of mind and ingenuity threw her
down and once again rapidly grew in size.

त सा हनम
ु तापपात िवधुरा भिस।
तां हतां वानरे णाशु पिततां वी य िसंिहकाम ्।।5.1.196।।
भत
ू ा याकाशचारीिण तमूचुः लवगो तमम ्।

सा that, हनम
ु ता by Hanuman, त त ् heart torn, िवधुरा miserable, अ भिस into water, पपात fell
down, वानरे ण by vanara, आशु instantly, हताम ् killed, पितताम ् dropped, वी य seeing,
आकाशाचारीिण moving in the sky, भत
ू ािन beings, तम ् him, लवगो तमम ् best of vanaras, ऊचुः
addressed.

Heart torn as under and killed by Hanuman, miserable Simhika instantly fell into the sea water.
Observing it, the beings who ranged the sky said to the foremost of vanaras:

भीमम य कृतं कमर् मह स वं वया हतम ्।।5.1.197।।


साधयाथर्मिभप्रेतमिर टं लवतां वर।
लवतां वर O great jumper, अ य to day, वया by you, महत ् great, स वम ् creature, हतम ् is
destroyed, भीमम ् fierce, कमर् action, कृतम ् done, अिभप्रेतम ् intention, अथर्म ् aim, अिर टम ्
unobstructed, साधय you fulfill

"O great jumper a great deed has been done by you today in killing that fierce
creature. O great monkey fulfil your mission without any obstruction.

य य वेतािन च वािर वानरे द्र यथा तव।।5.1.198।।


धिृ त र्ि टमर्ितदार् यं सः कमर्सु न सीदित।

वानरे द्र O lord of vanara, य य in whom, धिृ तः fortitude, ि टः vision, मितः intelligence, दा यम ्
dexterity, एतािन these, च वािर four, तव यथा as in you, स: he, कमर्सु in missions, न सीदित will
not get lost.

"O lord of vanaras he in whom these four qualities, fortitude, vision, intelligence and dexterity
exist as in you will achieve his mission and not get lost".

स तैः स भािवतः पू यः प्रितप नप्रयोजनः।।5.1.199।।


जगामाकाशमािव य प नगाशनव किपः।

पू यः a venerable one, सः किपः that monkey, तैः by them, स भािवतः honoured, प्रितप नप्रयोजनः
achieved the objective, आकाशम ् sky, आिव य having ascended, प नगाशानवत ् like Garuda,
जगाम went.

Honoured by them the venerable monkey went ascending into the sky like Garuda to achieve the
objective.

प्रा तभिू य ठपार तु सवर्तः प्रितलोकयन ्।।5.1.200।।


योजनानां शत या ते वनरािजं ददशर् सः।

प्रा तभिू य ठपारः on reaching the other side of the shore, सवर्तः all over, प्रितलोकयन ् looked
around, योजनानाम ् of yojanas, शत य of a hundred, अ ते at the end of, वनरािजम ् rows of forest
trees, ददशर् saw.
On reaching the other side of the shore crossing a hundred yojanas, he saw rows of forest trees.

ददशर् च पत नेव िविवधद्रम


ु भिू षतम ्।।5.1.201।।
वीपं शाखामग
ृ े ठो मलयोपवनािन च।

शाखामग
ृ े ठः best among the animals that jump on branches, monkeys, पत नेन onwhile yet on
air, िविवधद्रम
ु भिू षतम ् adorned with several kinds of beautiful trees, वीपम ् island, मलयोपवनािन
gardens bordering Malaya mountain, ददशर् च also saw.

Hanuman, the best among jumpers, even while in air he saw an island adorned with many trees,
also gardens adjacent to Malaya mountain.

सागरं सागरानूपं सागरानूपजान ् द्रम


ु ान ्।।5.1.202।।
ु या यिप िवलोकयन ्।
सागर य च प नीनां मख्
स महामेघसङ्काशं समी या मानमा मवान ्।।5.1.203।।
िन ध तिमवाकाशं चकार मितमान ् मितम ्।

आ मवान ् selfcontrolled, मितमान ् wise, सः he, सागरम ् sea, सागरानूपम ् marshy track bordering
the sea, सागरानूपजान ् grown in the region, द्रम
ु ान ् trees, सागर य ocean's, प नीनाम ् consorts,
मख
ु ा यिप च mouths also, िवलोकयन ् while looking at, महामेघसङ्काशम ् like a huge cloud,
आकाशम ् sky, िन ध तिमव as if obstructing, आ मानम ् his own body, समी य after observing,
मितम ् चकार thought.

Looking at the ocean, he observed the sea bordering the land and the trees grown on the marshy
land in the region of the mouths of the rivers (the consorts of the sea.). Looking at his own body
which was like a huge cloud as though obstructing the sky, the wise monkey of self-control
thought as follows.

कायविृ द्धं प्रवेगं च मम वैव राक्षसाः।।5.1.204।।


मिय कौतूहलं कुयर्िरित मेने महाकिपः।
मम my, कायविृ द्धम ् increasing size of the body, प्रवेगं च and speed, वैव after seeing,
राक्षसाः demons, मिय at me, कौतूहलम ् inquisitive, कुयःुर् will have, इित this, महाकिपः great
monkey, मेने felt.

'The demons will be inquisitive to know about me seeing the extraordinary size of my body as
well as my speed', thought the great monkey.
ततः शरीरं संिक्ष य त महीधरसि नभम ्।।5.1.205।।
पुनः प्रकृितमापेदे वीतमोह इवा मवान ्।

ततः then, तत ् that, महीधरसि नभम ् like a huge mountain, तत ् that, शरीरम ् body, संिक्ष य having
contracted, वीतमोहः giving up ignorance, आ मवािनव like a sage, पुनः once again, प्रकृितम ्
natural size, आपेदे assumed.

Then Hanuman contracted his huge mountain like body and assumed his normal form, just as a
sage who gives up ignorance on awakening .

तद्रप
ू मितसंिक्ष य हनुमान ् प्रकृतौ ि थतः।।5.1.206।।
त्रीन ् क्रमािनव िवक्र य बिलवीयर्हरो हिरः।

हनुमान ् Hanuman, तत ् that, पम ् form, अितसंिक्ष य contracting to very small size, बिलवीयर्हरः
just as Hari took small form to defeat king Bali, हिरः Lord Visnu, त्रीन ् three, क्रमान ् strides,
िवक्र य इव overpowering the valour, प्रकृतौ his original form, ि थतः stood.

Hanuman returned to his normal form contracting to his small size, just like Lord Visnu returned
to his original form after taking three strides and defeating the valour of king Bali.

स चा नानािवध पधारी परं समासा य समद्र


ु तीरम ्।
परै रशक्यः प्रितप न पः समीिक्षता मा समवेिक्षताधर्ः।।5.1.207।।

चा नानािवध पधारी who can take diffrent lovely forms, परै ः by others, अशक्यः not possible, सः
he, परम ् opposite side, समद्र
ु तीरम ् sea shore, समासा य after reaching, समीिक्षता मा
gazing at his own self, प्रितप न पः assumed a form suitable for the purpose, समवेिक्षताथर्ः
considered.

He reached the opposite shore of the sea. He had achieved the impossible. One who could
assume a variety of lovely forum, he, gazing at his own body, deliberated on the future course of
action.

ततः स ल ब य िगरे ः समद्ध


ृ े िविचत्रकूटे िनपपात कूटे ।
सकेतको ालकनािलकेरे महािद्रकूटप्रितमो महा मा।।5.1.208।।

ततः then, महािद्रकूटप्रितमः top of the huge Trikuta mountain, सः he, महा मा great self, ल ब य
िगरे ः on the mountain called Lamba, िविचत्रकूटे on a mountain with wonderful, समद्ध
ृ े rich,
सकेतको ालकनािलकेरे in Kethaka Uddalaka, Panasa and Coconut trees, प्रितमो descended,
िनपपात landed कूटे peak

Then the high-souled Hanuman, who resembled a huge mountain, descended on the peak of the
huge mountain Trikuta, called Lamba, which was wonderful with kethaka flowers, uddalaka and
coconut trees.

तत तु स प्रा य समद्र
ु तीरं समी य लङ्कां िगिरवयर्मिू नर्।
किप तु ति नि नपपात पवर्ते िवधूय पं यथय मग
ृ िवजान ्।।5.1.209।।

ततः then, किपः तु vanara also, समद्र


ु तीरम ् to sea shore, स प्रा य after reaching, िगिरवयर्मिू नर्
located on the mountain peak, लङ्काम ् Lanka, समी य having observed, पम ् form, िवधूय shook,
मगृ िवजान ् beasts and birds, यथयन ् scared, ति मन ् on that, पवर्ते on the mountain, िनपपात
landed.

Reaching the sea shore, beholding Lanka located on the peak of Tri-kuta, Hanuman shook his
body, scaring the beasts and birds and landed on the mountain.

स सागरं दानवप नगायुतं बलेन िवक्र य महोिमर्मािलनम ्।


िनप य तीरे च महोदधे तदा ददशर् लङ्काममरावतीिमव।।5.1.210।।

सः he, दानवप नगायुतम ् filled with demons and serpents, महोिमर्मािलनम ् of garland of high
waves, सागरम ् ocean, बलेन by his process, िवक्र य having crossed, महोदधेः the great ocean, तीरे
on the shore, िनप य having landed, तदा then, अमरावतीिमव resembling Amaravati, लङ्काम ्
Lanka, ददशर् he saw.
Landing on the shore after crossing by his prowess the great ocean filled with demons, and
serpents, adorned with garlands of waves, Hanuman beheld Lanka which was like Amaravati,
the capital of Indra.

इ याष ीमद्रामायणे वा मीकीय आिदका ये सु दरका डे प्रथम सगर्ः।।


Thus ends the first sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage
Valmiki.
