Privacy has become a very controversial topic, as governments need to get
some private information in order to guarantee their citizens’ safety.
In spite of that, some people claim that conversations they have with their mobile phones should not be recorded. They also argue that anyone should be allowed to know which webpages they visit. However, there are also plenty of police officers as well as civilians who consider that this information can be really useful so as to solve and prevent crimes. Nowadays, we do live in a very unsteady world, where acts of terrorism have spread all over the world. As a result of that, the average citizen has become more willing to let the police get some personal information, what shows that somehow people have started to prioritize safety over privacy. Besides, it has been showed that having this kind of information is a great tool to fight terrorism, as you can find out the accomplices a terrorist had or listen to his calls. Obviously, the police are not going to waste their time listening to private conversations of people who are not suspected of terrorism. In such a global world, we should be aware of the fact that technology can be used to keep our day-to-day safer, therefore, we should not fear a partial loss of privacy when lives are in danger. To sum up, I do regard as necessary the recording of conversations and the collection of data that can help to improve the safety of our society.
