Globalisation – good news or bad?

The fact that our world has become more globalised than ever is undeniable.
This is a situation that has been going on in our societies beyond our influence.
However, if we look back, has globalisation had a good effect or not?

On the one hand, it eases mobility, so people are able to travel as well as work
abroad. That is because borders have lost its crucial importance and language
barrier is about to disappear - since English has become a lingua franca all over
the world.

Besides, those who claim for globalisation also argue that communication is
almost instantaneous; what allows us to be updated about whatever happens in
every corner of the world - an interconnected world in which international trade
has increased the production of goods and services.

On the other hand, globalisation has decreased each country’s autonomy and
independence. As a result of that, one country’s economy would be affected by
an important fact in other country. Furthermore, this influence is usually exerted
by wealthy countries over the poor ones – what strengthens this situation.

Moreover, small businesses have had to deal with a strong competence that
they cannot face – so they have to close before the multinational companies’
power. Besides, globalisation has made countries to lose part of their identity
and many of their cultural particularities - what reduces our cultural diversity
arose along the centuries.

So all in all, globalisation has both and bad consequences; so that, it is


judgement depends on everyone’s point of view and it is an individual decision
that we should feel free to take, always being well-informed about the current
situation in order to prevent false prejudices and trends to distort us.
