1 Eating Habits 1

1. How many meals a day do you usually have?

I usually have four meals a day: breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper.

2. What is your favourite food?

a). I like healthy food and enjoy eating fresh salads, fruit and vegetables, low fat dairy products.
b). I adore pizza, spaghetti, casserole (запеканка) and pasta.

c). Frankly speaking, I have a sweet tooth, that’s why I adore desserts, especially apple muffins
and banana cheesecake. They are my favourites.

a). As a rule, I have something substantial for lunch, for example, a bowl of soup for my main
course or mashed potatoes or fried vegetables for the second. For dessert I usually have an apple
muffin or a piece of banana cheesecake.

b). As a rule, I have mixed greens for my starter and some cabbage, pea or potato soup for the
main course. You know, I have a sweet tooth, so I usually have something sweet for dessert, for
example, an apple muffin or a piece of banana cheesecake.

4. Do you prefer fast food or homemade food? Why?

Of course, I prefer eating homemade food because it’s healthier than junk food. My mother
usually buys natural high-quality products, low-fat dairy food, a lot of fresh vegetables and fruit.
The dishes she cooks are not only tasty but also useful. As for fast-food, it’s full of chemical
additives and is harmful to people’s health.

5. Would you like to take part in a TV cookery show, for example, cooking your favourite
dish in a TV studio? Why?

a). As for me, I wouldn’t like to take part in TV shows because I’m too shy to become a public
person. Moreover, I’m bad at cooking.

b). Of course, I’d like to participate in a TV show. On the one hand, I’m good at cooking, know a
lot of recipes and can share them with people. On the other hand, I enjoy being in public eyes.

6. What would you recommend to a teenager who wants to keep fit?

1). I’d recommend that he or she should eat healthy food such as natural high-quality products,
low-fat dairy food, a lot of fresh vegetables and fruit. Also, it would be a good idea to give up
snacking and keep to a balanced diet.

2). To my mind, the best recipe is a balanced diet and exercising.

2 Music and other arts


1. What kind of music do you usually listen to?

As a rule, I listen to pop, rap, hip hop, jazz, rock and classical music. Sometimes I listen to
electro or country music. The choice of music depends on my mood.

2. What musical instrument would you like to learn to play?

I’d like to play the guitar because this musical instrument sounds very beautiful.

3. What clubs or societies can you attend in your school?

Most pupils of our school attend Drama, Art and music clubs.

4. How often do you have school concerts or performances?

The students of our school participate in many concerts, performances and other school events
during the school year. Every month we take part in some event. The most exciting one is the
New Year celebration.

5. What would you prefer: going to the theatre or watching a film at home? Why?

Of course, I’d prefer staying at home because it’s more convenient for me. I can stop the film at
any place and do something else, after that I can go on watching the film. And, frankly speaking,
I hate the chewing atmosphere of a cinema.

6. What advice would you give to your friends who want to make their free time more
interesting?

I’d recommend that they should find people with similar interests and spend time together.

1. How many lessons do you usually have?

- As a rule, I have six lessons a day, but on Saturdays I have only four lessons.

- The most difficult subject for me is Maths because I don’t like to make calculations.

- My favourite day of the week is Sunday because it’s a day off and I don’t have to wake up
early.

- There is a gym, a swimming pool, a big stadium, a football pitch and a modern tennis court.
Moreover, our school has a lot of equipment such as horizontal bars, weight lifting materials,

5. Do you think school uniform is necessary or not? Why do you think so?

- I think school uniform is absolutely essential because it makes students look smart and equal.

6. What would you recommend that your friend do to improve his English?

- I would recommend that he should read a lot of English books, watch English films, learn
words and fixed expressions and, of course, chat with native speakers as much as possible.

4. Modern film industry

1. How often do you go to the cinema?

a). - I usually go to the cinema once or twice a month.

b). – I almost never (rarely) go to the cinema because I am always very busy and don’t have time
for entertainment.

2. What kind of films do you like most?

- I adore comedies because they make me laugh a lot. Moreover, I don’t mind watching
adventure and action films.

3. Why do you think many people prefer watching films at home?

Many people don’t like the chewing atmosphere of the cinema so they prefer staying at home
and watching films there. Moreover, watching films at home is free of charge.

4. What do you like to do in your free time?

- I prefer watching TV, hanging out with my friends or just reading an interesting book during
my leisure time. I also enjoy surfing the Net.

5. How can films in English help students improve their English?

- While watching English films students can improve their listening and pronunciation skills and
expand their vocabulary as they get to know a lot of new words, fixed expressions and idioms.

6. What film would you recommend that your friend see and why?

- I would recommend that my friend should see the comedy “Home alone” because it is easy to
watch and makes people laugh a lot. Moreover, the film has a wonderful plot and awesome
special effects.

1. What kind of books do you like to read?


- I really enjoy reading science fiction books because they are full of ideas to think about. While
reading these books people develop their imagination and become more broad-minded.

- I adore reading fantasy stories. I also enjoy science fiction books.

- My favourite author is J. K. Rowling.

- My favourite author is Herbert George Wells.

3. How often do you borrow books from the library?

- I rarely go to the library because I usually download books from the Internet. For me it’s much
more convenient.

- To my mind, modern teens read less nowadays because there are a lot of types of entertainment

games to reading books.

5. How can reading English books help students to improve their English?

- While reading students expand their vocabulary by learning a lot of new words, fixed
expressions and idioms. They also practice their grammar skills.

6. What book would you recommend to your friend who wants to read something for
pleasure ? Why?

- I would recommend that my friend read one of the books about Harry Potter because on the
one hand, these books have exciting plots and are easy and interesting to read. On the other hand,
they are very useful for children and teens as tell them about friendship and real values in life.

- I’d recommend books about Sherlock Holmes by Agatha Christie. They are easy to read and
understand. Moreover, their plots are exciting.

- My mother usually goes shopping in our family.

- There I can buy almost everything I need for everyday life from a toothbrush to food products,
from clothes and food to furniture.

- I go shopping once or twice a week. I do it so rarely because I am always very busy.

- Because they save a lot of time as there people can buy a lot of things in one place.

5. Why do some people hate shopping?

- Some people don’t like to go shopping because they feel uncomfortable in crowded places.
Moreover, shopping is very time consuming.

6. What time would you recommend that busy people should go shopping?

- I’d recommend that they should go to the shop early in the morning when shopping centres are
less crowded or on weekends because they can shop without hurrying.

1. How much free time do you have on weekdays?

- I don’t have any free time on weekdays because I am always very busy.

2. How do you and your friends usually spend your free time?

-In summer we usually go swimming, play football or go for a walk. In winter we often go
snowboarding, skating or skiing. Tastes differ, of course, but all of us enjoy surfing the net or
hanging out.

- I like spending my free time with my friends and family.

- I play football for our school team and sing in our school choir.

- I’m sure people must find time for sports because regular exercise is a wonderful way to be

- First, I would learn to play the guitar. It’s my dream. Moreover, I would go travelling with my

- My favourite season is winter because, on the one hand, I adore winter sports. On the other
hand, winter is the most beautiful season for me.

- My family and I usually travel abroad in summer.

- I enjoy snowboarding with my friends. Moreover, we like skiing, skating, tobogganing, playing

In my opinion, the plane is the most convenient, the fastest and the safest means or transport.

- I’d prefer to live in a big city because it gives people a lot of opportunities for education,

- Living in the country is peaceful and quite, the air is clean and the people are friendly.

- Air pollution is one of the biggest environmental problems in my region.

- I usually get up at 7 o’clock in the morning when my alarm-clock rings.

- I prefer having 1 or 2 eggs and a glass of milk for breakfast.

- As I live not far from the school where I study, it usually takes me 15 minutes to get there on
foot.

it?

- My favourite part of the day is evening because only in the evening I have can relax after the
hard working day.

- I tidy my room, do the washing up and throw away the rubbish. Moreover, sometimes I water
the flowers and help my mom with cooking.

- I would recommend that he or she should get up early and do morning exercises. What is more,
going to bed earlier is a good idea too.

- I’m fifteen years old.

- I was given my first cell phone when I started school.

3. What do you usually use your mobile phone for?

- I use it for many different things: I call my relatives and friends, text messages, play games,

- I sometimes feel uncomfortable because I’m used to having this device in my pocket.
Moreover, without a cell phone I am afraid to miss an important call.

- I think it’s definitely right because mobile phones distract pupils from studying.

- I think people should turn off or down their mobiles in all public places.

- I’m fifteen years old.

- I usually spend two hours a day surfing the Net.

- I use it to chat with my friends, to search information and to play games.

- We learn to use computers for different purposes.

Nearly all jobs today need good computer skills.

- I would recommend that he or she should take a10- minute break every two hours and do
special exercises for eyes and back.

15. Teenager attitude to English language learning

1. What is your favourite school subject?

- My favourite subject is English.

2. When did you start learning English?

- I began learning it at the age of 7 when I started school.

3. What do you do it your English lessons?

- We do different exercises, listen to people talking English and write projects. Sometimes we
sing songs or even watch films.

4. Do you find learning English easy or difficult? Why?

- I find it difficult because there are more exceptions than rules in English and you have to look up words
in the dictionary to check up their pronunciation because you can’t rely on rules.

-I do not find English complicated because, on the one hand, its grammar is easy. On the other hand, there are
many resources which help us study the language such as TV shows, movies, music, podcasts, books and

websites. All this makes the language easy to learn.

5. What other foreign languages would you like to learn? Why?

- I’d like to learn Chinese because China is rising and Chinese is quickly becoming the language
of the future. I am sure it can be useful for my future job.

6. What would you recommend to a person to do to improve his/her English?

- I’d recommend that he or she should study hard and practice the language as much as possible.
The most useful way, in my opinion, is watching English films. While doing it students can
improve their listening and pronunciation skills and expand their vocabulary as they get to know
a lot of new words, fixed expressions and idioms.

- I adore hanging out with my friends and doing different activities together. I also like reading
and playing the guitar.

- I have been living is U-U for eight years , since I was born.

- Summer is the best time for visiting my town because it’s especially beautiful at this time with

- The pupils of our school can learn English, German, French and Latin.

- We have three lessons of English a week.

- Nowadays foreign languages are popular because they give people more opportunities to get a
good and well-paid job. Moreover, the knowledge of foreign languages helps people to

- The most effective way to learn a foreign language is to go to a native speaking country and
practice the language there.

- I’m sure it will be necessary for me because I want to be a translator or an interpreter.

- I would recommend that he or she should learn Chinese because it is very popular today.

- I’d recommend that he or she should keep to a balanced diet of natural products and do sports.

22. Computers

1. How old were you when you started using the computer?

When I was five I first started playing computer games but I didn’t have the Internet
installed until I was 9 years old.

2. In what lessons at school do you use computers?

We use computers at the lessons of Information Technology(IT).


3. What do you use your computer for?

I use my computer for surfing websites, watching films, playing computer games, getting
e-mails and of, course, for chatting with my friends. I also use it as a media centre to
store my vast library of books, photos, music and other stuff.

4. What do the members of your family use computers for?

My family members use the computer for different purposes. My mother is a teacher and
she uses the computer while preparing for her lessons. My father is an engineer. He uses
the computer for his projects. My grandparents play computer games, listen to music and
chat with their old friends via the social networks Odnoklassniki and Facebook.

5. Which jobs need good computer skills in your view?

A lot of jobs need good computer skills. They are architects, designers, engineers,
information managers, system analysts, mathematicians, accountants, bank tellers,
secretaries, photographers, X-ray technicians, mechanics, electricians and others.

6. In what way have computers made people’s life easier?

Nowadays it’s much easier for people to communicate, to pay bills, to plan a vacation,
count, write, listen to music, learn and work. We use computers in schools, offices,
airplanes, trains, at home- everywhere.

23 Reading 2

1. How old were you when you learnt to read?

I was 5 when I learnt to read. My mother taught me.

2. What do you like to read about?

I enjoy reading books about travelling and friendship.

3. Who is your favorite writer?

My favourite writer is Agatha Christie. I like her stories about Sherlock Holmes because
they are easy to read and have interesting plots.

4. What do you usually do in Literature lessons?

We read books by Russian and foreign writers, write essays, discuss different topics and
recite poems. Sometimes we watch educational films.

5. What do you like to do in your free time apart from reading?

Besides reading, I enjoy surfing the Net, playing computer games, hanging out or
listening to music.
6. What books do you prefer: printed books or e-books? Why?

-I prefer reading electronic books because they are more convenient as I can download
hundreds of books in one tiny device.

-Of course, I prefer electronic books for some reasons. Firstly, digital books are more
environmentally friendly than printed books, Secondly, electronic books are more
portable. Thirdly, they are cheaper than printed books. Moreover, they have built-in
dictionaries and can be read in the darkness. And the most important thing is that I can
download hundreds of books in one tiny device.

24 Fashion

1. What colour of clothes do you prefer wearing?

- Personally, I wear clothes of all colours, The choice depends on the season. In winter
and autumn I prefer wearing darker colours while in spring and summer bright colours ar
my favourites. Frankly speaking, I get more compliments wlile wearing pink a red
clothes.

-I prefer wearing clothes in calming colours. Dark and trendy bright colours don’t attract
me.

2. What clothes do you usually wear?

-I prefer casual clothes: jeans, t-shirts, sweaters or sportswear. They are comfortable and
I can wear them anywhere , except school and formal events.

- The choice of clothes depends seasons, places and events. When I go to school, I put

on my school uniform. If I have to attend a formal event and look elegant, I wear skirts,
dresses and high-heeled shoes. At home I am dressed in a comfortable dressing gown and
slippers. In winter I wear coats, boots, warm hats, scarves and gloves. In summer

I usually wear skirts, dresses, shorts, short-sleeved blouses and t- shirts, sandals, sun-hats
and sunglasses.

3. How often do you go shopping for clothes?

-I go shopping very rarely- approximately 3 of 4 times a year. I’m always very busy, you
know. As for my basics, I buy them on-line. My parents put some money in my bank
account every month. I like on-line shopping because I can buy clothes and other stuff for
cheap.

- I never go shopping because I prefer shopping on-line to shopping in regular shops.

4. Who do you usually go shopping with?


- I can’t spend money wisely so I never go shopping alone. As a rule, I go to the shop
with my mother because she always dresses tastefully and has good shopping
experience. Moreover, my mother always follows the latest trends in fashion and
gives me good advice. She is also an expert on quality. So my mother helps me make
the right choice.

-Yes, I have to wear a school uniform because the school regulations in my school are

6. Does a career of a fashion designer attract you or not?

-Yes, it attracts me greatly because I’ve always been interested in fashion and I know
current fashion trends. Moreover, I’m highly creative and have excellent drawing and
sewing skills. I’m sure It’s very interesting to make people’s clothes. Good designers can
make people happy.

25 Animals and pets

1. What is your favourite animal? Why do you like it?

My favourite animals are dogs and cats. I love them because they bring a great joy in the
family. They are also great stress-relievers. I have a dog and a cat at home. I adore my
pets.

2. What pets are the most popular in Russia in your view?

- The most popular pets in Russia are cats and dogs. People who live in flats prefer cats
because it is easier to take care of a cat than to look after a dog. Those who keep dogs
need to walk them at least 2 times a day. Most people can’t do it so they keep
hamsters, rabbits, goldfish, birds, white rats and mice because these animals are quite
easy to look after.

3. Is it right for people to keep exotic animals as pets? Why?

- To my mind, it’s a bad idea to keep exotic animals as pets, because, on the one hand,
it can be dangerous for people. On the other hand, it’s cruel to animals, as exotic

- Because watching the animals is just entertainment for them. Unfortunately their
parents didn’t tell them that it’s very cruel to keep animals in captivity and that
animals should live in their natural habitat.

6. Does a career of a vet attract you or not?

In fact, the profession of a vet is very important because vets save lives of our pets.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t attract me because I want to be a teacher.
