THE EVOLUTION OF AUTOMOBILES

Adapted from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_automobile

17th and 18th centuries

Around the 17th century, Ferdinand Verbiest, a member of a Jesuit mission in China, built
the first steam-powered vehicle around 1672 as a toy for the Chinese Emperor. It was of
small enough scale that it could not carry a driver but it was, quite possibly the first working
steam-powered vehicle ('auto-mobile').

Ferdinand Verbiest's car.

Steam-powered self-propelled vehicles large enough to transport people and cargo were
first devised in the late 18th century. In 1784, William Murdoch built a working model of a
steam carriage. The first automobile patent in the United States was granted to Oliver
Evans in 1789, and in 1801 Richard Trevithick was running a full-sized vehicle on the roads
in Camborne, England.

19th century
Many vehicles started to be built around the world with innovations as hand brakes, multi-
speed transmissions. Some were commercially successful in providing mass transit.
However, trains and locomotives had most of the market and inventors and engineers
shifted their efforts to improvements in railway locomotives.

What some people define as the first "real" automobile was produced by French Amédée
Bollée in 1873, who built self-propelled steam road vehicles to transport groups of
passengers.

The American George B. Selden filed for a patent on May 8, 1879. His application included
not only the engine but its use in a 4-wheeled car. Karl Benz, the inventor of numerous car-
related technologies, received a German patent in 1886.

20th and 21st centuries

Steam-powered automobiles continued development all the way into the early 20th century,
but the dissemination of petrol engines in the late 19th century marked the end of steam
automobiles except as curiosities.

In 1870, in Vienna, Austria, inventor Siegfried Marcus put a liquid-fuelled internal

combustion engine on a simple handcart which made him the first man to propel a vehicle
by means of gasoline. Today, this car is known as "the first Marcus car".

"Marcus Car" is in Vienna's museum.

The first company formed exclusively to build automobiles was Panhard et

Levassor in France. Panhard was quickly followed by Peugeot two years later. By the start
of the 20th century, the automobile industry was beginning to take off in Western Europe,
especially in France, where 30,204 were produced in 1903. From 1905 through to the
beginning of World War I, development of automobile technology was quick, due in part to
hundreds of small manufacturers competing to gain the world's attention.

Nowadays, cars are produced in massive scale and have many different characteritics
depending on the company which produce them. Now, we have electric cars and hybrids
that work on both, gasoline and electricity.

And the future....

The car industry is evolving to offer more efficient , environment friendly and faster cars
than ever. We will have to wait and see if someday cars will fly.

NOW, ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:

1. The first real automobile was created by  Respuesta
Amédée Bollée
2. Who built a working model of a steam carriage in
William Murdoch
1784?  Respuesta

PRESENT PERFECT
We use the Present Perfect to say that an action happened at an unspecified time before
now. The exact time is not important.
You CANNOT use the Present Perfect with specific time expressions such as:
yesterday, one year ago, last week, when I was a child, when I lived in Japan, at that
moment, that day, one day, etc.
We CAN use the Present Perfect with unspecific expressions such as: ever, never, once,
many times, several times, before, so far, already, yet, etc.
Examples:

 I have seen that movie twenty times.

 I think I have met him once before.
 There have been many earthquakes in California.
 People have traveled to the Moon.
 People have not traveled to Mars.
 Have you read the book yet?
 Nobody has ever climbed that mountain.
 A: Has there ever been a war in the United States?
 B: Yes, there has been a war in the United States.

Here you are the structure for the present perfect.

You must remember that the verb in the present perfect should be in its participle form.

For irregular verbs, the past participle is different. Here you are a short list of some
irregular verbs.

I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO WEAR!!!!

Read about this five easy steps and decide what to wear without having a
breakdown:

1. Decide what mood you are in. The night before, you might feel like wearing a dress
and super-high heels, but you might be too tired in the morning to carry on all day with
painful shoes and a skin-tight outfit. If you're happy and active, wear something
flirtatious, classy, and springy, like a floral A-line skirt over a brightly colored shirt and
sandals. If you're tired and sleepy, wear your favorite comfortable oversized hoodie
with yoga pants and flip-flops or skinny jeans and converse sneaks.
2. Know your body. Every item in your outfit should flatter you. Prepare for this in
advance by making sure your entire wardrobe fits you well, so it is easy to choose
outfits. If you do not want to attract attention to your mid-section, but you want to show
off your legs, wear a high-waisted short. However, if you want to show off your
midsection but hide your legs, wear a tight one-shouldered top with wide leg jeans.
3. Make sure you have timeless clothing items and basics in your closet. You should
probably have all the rainbow colors of tees, v-neck shirts, long sleeve tees, and tank
tops. As for bottoms, you should always have a classic jean skirt, light and dark jeans,
and light and dark skinny jeans. With dresses, the little black dress is never out of style,
and a signature long dress is a good idea. Flip-flops, sneakers, a boot, and a black heel is
a shoe supply, and one necklace that matches everything is your best accessory.
4. Make sure you wear an outfit suitable for that day. If it's a bright and sunny day,
don't wear a heavy sweater. You probably shouldn't wear a top in winter either.
Although make sure that if you're working at an office, you shouldn't wear anything
inappropriate or revealing. Unless you know exactly what is going on that day, you
should probably make sure you have items with you that will go with your outfit and
situation perfectly.
5. Be yourself. Straying away from your personal style might raise some eyebrows, so
make sure you stick to what you would wear. It’s perfectly fine to change your look,
just do it gradually, to avoid being accused of wearing a costume. However, being
yourself doesn't mean you shouldn't take risks; risks set you apart from being boring and
being spontaneously fashionable.

NOW, ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:

Haybridge Hall
Welcome to Haybridge Hall and thank you for choosing to use our Guide-O-Matic to help
you make the most out of your stay here. This guide is available in six other languages.
Just ask at the ticket office. The general history of the house is as follows:

Haybridge Hall was constructed at the end of the 15th Century and was originally called

Hawken Hall after the first family who Respuesta

be found behind the ticket office. This was added in 1941 when the British Army was using
Haybridge Hall as a headquarters for the 8th Army. Churchill is said to Respuesta

turned
Haybridge for some 200 years and Respuesta

the surrounding area into productive farmland where various crops, from wheat to potatoes,
were grown.
The Yardley family left Haybridge in 1722 and the property was left empty for some sixty
years or so, falling, in the meantime, into quite a state of disrepair. It was during this period
of neglect that the small church built on the grounds of the house in the early 16th Century,
crumbled into ruins. Little is known about this church although one drawing of it survives. A
local artist, Timothy Warsden, sketched the church in 1728, a mere six years after the
moved
Yardley family Respuesta

Haybridge Hall's destiny seemed to have been that of long-term neglect and eventual
destruction but the renowned local author William Hoaten bought Haybridge in 1784

and Respuesta

three years and a considerable amount of money renovating the mansion. By this time, the
amount of land belonging to the property had been considerably reduced and consisted of
the few acres you see today.
stayed
The Hoaten family Respuesta
at Haybridge until the beginning of the Second World War when the British Army took over
the property. After the war, the surviving members of the Hoaten family decided it would
prove too costly to move back into Haybridge Hall and so the property came to be owned
by the charitable organisation English Heritage, who runs it to this day.
English Heritage undertook an extensive renovation operation in the 1970's, costing over
ten million dollars. The aim of this work was to return Haybridge Hall to something of its
glory days when it was owned by the Yardley family for two centuries. Specialist builders
and craftsmen from all over the world were employed in an attempt to reconstruct the best
possible example of a 17th Century country house.

Haybridge Hall remains to this day one of the finest examples of British renaissance
architecture and the furnishing within gives an authentic idea of what country life was like
three to four centuries ago in this country. Last year, over 60,000 visitors took the same
path through Haybridge Hall that you yourself are taking today.

Now, please press button 2 if you would like to hear something about the first floor

HOUSES MADE OF WOOD AND LIGHT

By Michele Dunkerley with Jane Hickie

Taken from: http://utpress.utexas.edu/index.php/books/dunhou#sthash.APgw1WVp.dpuf
American architect Hank Schubart was regarded as a genius for finding the perfect site for
a house and for integrating its design into the natural setting, so that his houses appear to
be as native to the forest around them as the trees and rocks. Salt Spring Island, one of the
Gulf Islands in British Columbia, Canada, offered him a place to create the kind of
architecture that responded to its surroundings, and Schubart-designed homes populate
the island. Built of wood and glass, surrounded with light, and oriented to views, they
display characteristic features: random-width wood, exposed windows, rusticated
stonework. Over time, Schubart’s homes on Salt Spring Island came to be considered
uniquely Gulf Islands homes.

This inviting book offers the first introduction to the life and architecture of West Coast
modernist Henry A. Schubart, Jr. (1916–1998). While still in his teens, Schubart persuaded
Frank Lloyd Wright to accept him as a Taliesin Fellow, and his year’s apprenticeship in the
master’s workshop taught him principles of designing in harmony with nature that he
explored throughout the rest of his life. Michele Dunkerley traces Schubart’s career from his
early practice in San Francisco at the noted firm Wurster, Bernardi & Emmons, to his
successful firm with Howard Friedman, to his most lasting professional achievements on
Salt Spring Island, where he became the de facto community architect, designing more
than 230 residential, commercial, educational, and religious projects from many different
materials, including metal, stone, glass, and wool. Drawing lessons from his mentors over
his decades on the island, he forged an everyday architecture with his mastery of detail and
inventiveness. In doing so, he helped define how the island could grow without losing its
soul. Color photographs and site plans display Schubart’s remarkable homes and other
commissions.

REVIEW PAST SIMPLE

Here, we are going to review the most important things about the past simple. First, it is
important to say that the simple past expresses an action in the past.

We use the simple past for...

 action in the past taking place once, never or several times

Example: He visited his parents every weekend.

 actions in the past taking place one after the other

Example: He came in, took off his coat and sat down.

 action in the past taking place in the middle of another action

Example: When I was having breakfast, the phone

suddenly rang.

 if sentences type II (If I talked, …)

Example: If I had a lot of money, I would share it with you.

Let's see the structure:

Also, this tense needs the past simple form of the verbs. In order to create sentences in the
past tense, please remember:

The irregular verbs change its structure and that is the reason why you need to learn them.

How to Avoid Getting a Divorce

Your marriage looks like its over and your spouse has
told you s/he wants a divorce. Perhaps s/he's even
moved out. Maybe s/he's even having an affair. How do
you stop fighting? How do you get him/her to change
his/her mind and stay?
Step 1:
Act confident. Your spouse fell in love with a happy and balanced person whose world lit
up every time s/he walked into the room. It's understandable you're unhappy that s/he's
pulling away from you, but the more you cling, need, and desperately try to hang on, the
more unhappy you are (since it's obvious by now that s/he's leaving you), and the less and
less you are the person s/he once fell in love with. Be honest with yourself: Would you want
to spend the rest of your life with someone who's been acting the way you have been
acting lately? If you're friendly, attentive, and fun to be around, s/he will want to be around
you. S/he will start to gravitate (slowly but surely) back to you. Try to be confident, but not
arrogant, even if it is difficult for you.

Step 2:

Empathize with your partner. Cater to their emotional needs first, then the material ones.
Does you partner want to empty the bank account and buy a sports car? Say "I agree, it
would be great fun to buy a flashy car. Let's go to the auto show this weekend, pretend
we're filthy rich, and go for some test drives." Notice how you bypassed (for the time being)
emptying the bank account and instead focused on his(her) feelings. This brings you closer
together. Does your partner say you don't do enough chores around the house? Say "Yes, I
agree, I don't do anywhere near as much work around the house as you do. I understand
how upset that must make you feel at times." Notice how you bypassed (for the time being)
actually doing the chores, and instead focused on her(his) feelings.

Step 3:

Address the physical and material needs and desires after establishing a common
ground. If you've gone to the car show and had a great time, speak to each other if your
partner wants to spend money you don't have. If you begin to argue and your partner says
"You never care about what I want!", turn away from the spending issue and speak with
them about how you want them to be happy, and that's why you married them in the first
place, but that in the long run, neither of you will profit from being in debt. Let them know
that you would like to make them feel loved and appreciated in a different, more sensible
way.

Step 4:

Talk to your partner about your future. It does not help to pretend there is no problem.
That will not make it disappear. Make time to speak with your partner openly. Prepare
yourself for being emotionally vulnerable and lay it all on the table.Communicate your
feelings and your willingness to acknowledge theirs. If you love them and want them to give
you a chance and stay with you, tell them that. Offer to have counseling sessions or
anything else you (or they) think might help you.

Step 5:

Be honest and ask for honesty in return. Tell your partner that even if they are not in
love with you at the moment, the least you owe each other is respect. Respect means
being honest to each other. If you want to know and you think you can handle it
emotionally, ask them whether they are having an affair. Before you ask, think about how
you will respond to the possible answers. If they are having an affair, tell them how much
that hurts you, even if it feels counterintuitive. Tell them that you care about fidelity and that
you vowed to be faithful to each other. Ask them to end their affair if you want to rebuild a
strong bond with each other.

Step 6:

Be open to change. Agree to make changes in your routines or interaction if you feel it will
help. Make clear that you will try your best, but it might take you some time to get used to
them. Then really try your best and show that you are sincere. Ask the same in return.

Step 7:

Make up your mind to let it go if none of the above helps. If your partner is having an
affair and unwilling to give it up, don't stay. You can only save your marriage together. If
your partner simply does not want to, there is not much you can do, but you owe it to them
and your relationship to genuinely try before throwing in the towel.

NOW, ANSWER THE QUESTIONS:

Let's read about weather and then, answer the questions

WEATHER BY MIKE RAYNER

It's hardly surprising that weather is a favourite topic for so many people around the world –
it affects where we choose to live, what we wear, our moods, and perhaps even our
national characteristics. A sunny day can relieve the deepest depression, while extreme
weather can destroy homes and threaten lives.

The effects of weather

Palm trees bent double in hurricane force winds, cars stranded in snow drifts, people
navigating small boats down flooded city streets – images we are all familiar with from
news reports of severe weather spells. But many of the effects of the weather are less
newsworthy.
‘I’m feeling a bit under the weather’ is a common complaint in Britain, especially on
Monday mornings, and it seems that weather really can be responsible for moods. Studies
have shown that changeable weather can make it hard to concentrate, cloudy skies slow
down reflexes, and high humidity with hot, dry winds makes many people irritable and
snappy.

Some suggest that the weather also leaves its mark on character, giving people from the
same region similar temperaments, although it seems that economic, political and social
factors are likely to have a much stronger effect than the weather.

What causes changes in the weather?

If you live in a place like Britain, where the weather seems to change daily if not hourly, you
could be forgiven for thinking that the weather is random. In fact the weather is controlled
by systems which move around areas of the globe. In the UK the weather depends on
depressions, often called ‘lows’, and anticyclones, also known as ‘highs’. These systems
start in the Atlantic Ocean, and make their way across the British Isles from the west to the
east. Highs bring sunny weather, while lows bring rain and wind.

The weather systems in tropical climates are very different from those in mid and high
latitudes. Tropical storms develop from depressions, and often build into cyclones, violent
storms featuring hurricanes and torrential rain. In modern times, human activity seems to
be altering weather patterns. Gases produced by heavy industry change the temperature of
the Earth’s surface, and affect cloud formation. Some researchers say that factories in
Europe and North America may have been one of the causes of the droughts in Africa in
the 1980s.

Extreme weather

Although people in Britain often moan about the weather, we should spare a thought for the
inhabitants of parts of the world where extreme weather regularly wreaks havoc on the
environment and population. Sandstorms, tornadoes, blizzards and flash floods regularly
kill thousands of people and leave many others homeless.

While most of us try to avoid extreme weather, some adventurous souls actively seek out
places where extreme weather conditions exist. Sports such as surfing, kiteboarding,
iceclimbing and white-water rafting are becoming increasingly popular with people seeking
relief from the monotony of daily routine.  Extreme sports are about exhilaration, skill and
danger, and often harness the weather to provide adrenaline addicts with their kicks. Even
more extraordinary are storm-chasers – weather enthusiasts who risk their lives following
tornadoes and thunderstorms at high speed to witness the damage they cause at close
hand.
