Test III (Spring 2020): Assignment

ME312 Machine Design II

Total Marks: 25

Date of publish: April 06, 2020 Date of Submission: April 14, 2020

1. A single-geared blanking press has a stroke of 200 mm and a rated capacity of 320 kN. A cam-
driven ram is assumed to be capable of delivering the full press load at constant force during the
last 15 percent of a constant-velocity stroke. The camshaft has an average speed of 90 rpm and is
geared to the flywheel shaft at a 6:1 ratio. The total work done is to include an allowance of 16
percent for friction.
a) Estimate the maximum energy fluctuation.
b) Find the rim weight for an effective diameter of 1.2 m and a coefficient of speed
fluctuation
of 0.10.
2. A cone clutch has D = 330 mm, d = 306 mm, a cone length of 60 mm, and a coefficient of
friction of 0.26. A torque of 200 Nm is to be transmitted. For this requirement, estimate the
actuating force and pressure by both models (uniform pressure and uniform wear).
3. A full journal bearing has a journal diameter of 32 mm, with a unilateral tolerance of -0.012 mm.
The bushing bore has a diameter of 32.05 mm and a unilateral tolerance of 0.032 mm. The
bearing is 64 mm long. The journal load is 1.75 kN and it runs at a speed of 900 rpm. Using an
average viscosity of 55 mPa.s, find the minimum film thickness, the maximum film pressure, and
the total oil-flow rate for the minimum clearance assembly.
The following Raimondi and Boyd interpolation function needs to be used:

where y is the desired variable within the interval    and y , y1 , y1 2 and y1 4 are the
d 4
variables corresponding to l/d ratios of  , 1, ½ and ¼, respectively. You can make use of
Raimondi and Boyd charts (Refer Figs. 1, 2 and 3) to obtain the respective variable value at l/d=
 , 1, ½ and ¼ . Carry out the curve fitting to Raimondi and Boyd charts and write a computer
program to solve the above problem.
