Introduction
The institution has a network of Libraries as Main Library, Basic Science Library,
General Library, and Boys’ Hostel Library. These are well organized and rich
in resources containing Textbooks, reference books, allied books, professional
medical journals, audiovisual materials and have access to HEC Digital library
for students, faculty, and researchers. All libraries are air-conditioned and com-
fortable for study and reading. The library is spreading over thousands of sq.
feet with seating capacity and computers with internet facility for more than 200
readers. Main Library is remain open 8:00 AM to 12:00 Midnight for girls and
Boys Hostel Library 7/24.
The library is providing excellent services and facilities to meet the information
needs of its undergraduate students, postgraduate scholars, and faculty in their
studies, research, and teaching. The library is managed by postgraduate qual-
ified staff with devotion to support and encourage the users in academic and
research activities.

1.1 Resources and Services

1.1.1 Text books
All libraries contain medical textbooks for their users with multiple copies. Users
can read these in the library and can borrow three books at a time for a month
with the renewal provision.
Reference Books
The library has a separate collection of reference books meant for consultation
and study within library premises and restricted from being issued. These in-
clude magazines and journals, dictionaries, encyclopedias, atlases, yearbooks
or original editions of certain important textbooks.
The list of all the books in the library is given at the end of this document.

1.1.2 Journals
Peshawar Medical College library is subscribing more than 20 international jour-
nals with high impact factor. The library is also receiving regularly more than 20
national medical journals. The details are attached in an annexure at the end. Be-
sides this library staff encourage their users towards Open Access (OA) articles
for their research purpose.

1.1.3 HEC Digital Library Access

PMC Library has access to HEC Digital Library. Students, faculty, and research-
ers can access databases containing about 75000 contents of well-reputed pub-
lishers for their academic and research purpose. This access provided to all
computers of the institution through Local Area Network.

1.1.4 Wi-Fi
The library is the access point for research and academic information. In view of
this aim, the library is providing a restriction free WiFi service to its users. This
way they can access the internet and HEC Digital Library through WiFi using
their Laptop, Tablet, and Smartphones.

1.1.5 Online Catalogue

The Library has computerized the library bibliographic and users’ data using
the international library software. The library circulation operations and reporting
execute through this software. All users are provided the login facility to check
their circulation history or use to the online catalogue. The online catalogue is
accessible even on smartphones through the internet. Different features of the

1.1.6 Live Assistance

We also provide the online assistance facility through live chat at OPAC. Stu-
dents can ask the queries and we consider and manage these.

1.2 User Education Program

The library is providing the User Education Program to its users in view of ap-
propriate use of library print and online resources. This program consists of the
following items:

zz Introduction to Libraries network, Library sources, and services, Book,

Non-book materials and serials (Journals, other documents)

zz Classification Systems (DDC, LCC), OCLC & Online Catalogue and its use
for bibliographic information.

zz Information Retrieval System: Data, Information, Source of Information,

Query, Types of Query, Retrieval Evaluation (Formative, Summative) Validi-
ty, Reliability, Relevancy, Adequacy.

zz Online Searching Techniques: Search Engines, Simple Search, Boolean

Search, Phrase Searching, Truncation Searching, Advanced Searching,
Google Scholar and its functions.

zz Introduction to Databases: Bibliographic Databases, Full-text Databases,

Free Medical Databases (Pubmed, PMC, Mesh), NDTLD (The Networked

zz How to use HEC Digital Library Resources: Ebrary (E-Books), Springer-

link, Taylor and Francis, Wiley-Blackwell Journals, Ovid, ProQuest, Paki-
stan Research Repository.

zz How to use social (media) networking for research. Researchgate, Aca-

demia, LinkedIn, Facebook (Research groups).

zz Use of Authentic sources: research reports and its different types and
components, published non published information, recognition of web
domains.

zz Journal prestige tools: Impact Factor, Scimago Raking, CiteScore; and

how to find these.

zz Introduction to Bibliography: Types, Bibliography vs. Reference, Citations

and its Styles, Online citation, Endnote (commercial) and Mendeley (free)
