Role-Play 1 – Job Interview

S1 – The Job Applicant (Candidate)

You have been unemployed for a long period and now you have a great opportunity to apply for a
job. You are trying to be a bilingual receptionist at Ouro Minas Hotel, in Belo Horizonte. During the interview
try to demonstrate confidence, talk about your experience in English, your professional experience, strong
points, etc. Only in the end of the interview you may ask about salary and work hours.

S2 – The Interviewer
You are a psychologist who works at Ouro Minas Hotel, in Belo Horizonte. You are supposed to
interview two candidates now, who are applying for the bilingual receptionist job. Make questions about
his/her professional experience, personality (remember you need a very talkative person!), education and
foreign languages, especially English. Do not forget to mention the work hours (11 p.m. – 7 a.m. Monday to
Saturday), salary (R$ 1500,00).

Role-Play 2 – At the Restaurant

S1 – You are going to have dinner in an Italian restaurant in the USA. Ask for some traditional pasta and
some red wine for your main course. If the waiter / waitress offer, accept the suggestion of having chocolate
pie as the dessert. Don’t forget to pay the bill and ask the waiter if you can pay by credit card.

S2 – You are the waiter / waitress of an Italian restaurant in the USA. A new client is arriving right now. Find
a table for him/her and ask him/her what he/she would like to have for his/her main course. Don’t forget to
offer a delicious chocolate pie as the dessert. If he/she asks, you accept all kinds of credit card.

Role-Play 3 – At Tourist Information

S1 – You are an American tourist in Belo Horizonte and you want to visit Pampulha’s Lake and its
attractions. Ask a travel agent at Belotur (in downtown) about the best way to get to Pampulha, if possible, by
bus. Ask him/her about the kind of attractions you can find there.
S2 – You work at Belotur as a travel agent. Your first client is an American tourist who wants to visit
Pampulha’s Lake and its attractions. Explain him/her how to get there by bus (remember you are at Belotur
in downtown). Tell him/her the kinds of attractions he/she can find there.

Role-Play 3 – Directions

S1 – You are a British tourist in Belo Horizonte and you want to go to Liberty’s Square. You are on Afonso
Pena Avenue. Ask a person in the street for directions. Don’t forget to thank the person for the information.

S2 – You live in Belo Horizonte and a British tourist is going to ask you the right directions to get to Liberty’s
Square. The person is on Afonso Pena Avenue. Give him/her the right directions to get there.

Role Play 4 – Buying Clothes

S1 – You want to buy yourself a new shirt at C&A. When the shop assistant asks, tell him/her your size and
the color of your preference. Don’t forget to try it on and ask the shop assistant if you can pay by cheque.

S2 – You are the shop assistant at C&A. A new client is arriving. Offer your help and don’t forget to ask
about his/her size and the color of his/her preference. Show the person where he/she can try it on and say
your opinion about the way he/she looks in that shirt. If the person asks, tell him/her you accept both cheque
and credit card.

Role Play 5 – Checking in at a hotel

S1 – You are a receptionist at Ouro Minas Palace Hotel. Your first client arrives and says he/she has a
reservation. Ask his/her name and check how many nights would he/she like to stay. Don’t forget to tell
him/her the room number (905). If he/she asks for some tourist information about Belo Horizonte tell him/her
the beautiful sights of the city.

S2 – You are a client at Ouro Minas Palace Hotel. When the receptionist asks, tell him/her you would like
to stay 5 nights into the hotel. Ask for some tourist information about the city (the famous sights of Belo
Horizonte).

Role Play 6 – Checking out of a hotel

S1 – You are a receptionist at Hilton Hotel. One of your clients is checking out. Ask which room was it and
don’t forget to ask also if he/she had anything from the minibar last night. And of course, don’t forget to ask
about the way he/she would like to pay. Also, offer help with the luggage and a taxi.
S2 – You are a client at Hilton Hotel and you are going to check out. Ask for your bill and, if the receptionist
asks, tell him/her what you had from the minibar last night. Tell him/her how you would like to pay. Ask
him/her to call you a taxi and refuse politely any help with your luggage.
