Cambridge English Empower B2 Unit Progress Test 6.

Now look at the instructions for part 1.

You will hear eight short recordings. For each one choose the best answer.

You will hear each recording twice.

1 You hear two colleagues talking.

What is the man doing?

M: Hi Sarah. Do you have a moment?

F: Sure. What is it?
M: You know the contract we’re trying to get? The one for building the new hotel in
Miami?
F: Yes, I know the one.
M: I’m really sorry to ask you this, but I’ve done a report for the manager about the
project, but I’m not sure I’ve included everything. I was wondering if you could just
check it over for me? You know, to make sure I haven’t missed anything.
F: Well, I’m quite busy this week, but I can have a quick look if you like.

2 You hear a woman leaving a telephone message.

Why is she phoning?

Hi Lisa, It’s Jenny here. Listen, I’ve got a bit of a problem. It’s about my trip to France. Do
you remember that my neighbour Tom said he’d drive me to the airport on Friday morning?
Well, the thing is, he can’t do it now. I hope you don’t mind my asking but do you think you
could give me a lift? It’d be really great if you could. Hope to speak to you soon! Bye.

Why is he phoning?

Hi, it's Matt here. I'm sorry I didn't call you back sooner but, as you can imagine, we've been
pretty busy getting ready to move to Turkey. Anyway, I got your message. Listen, it's so kind
of you to offer to lend us a hand with the packing this week, but in fact I've hired some
professional guys to do it all for us. But you must come to visit some time as soon as we've
got ourselves organised in the new house in Turkey, ok? Anyway, speak soon. Bye!

Why is she phoning?

Hello, Maria. This is Angie here. I'm just calling to say that the exam results are out today.
Eighty-nine per cent in Spanish! It's brilliant - I couldn't believe it. My Spanish teacher
couldn't either - he's delighted with me. Anyway, I couldn't have done it without your help.
All those evenings last term with you explaining everything to me! I'm really grateful. So any
time you need any help with anything, just ask! Anyway, I'm off to celebrate the end of
exams with friends. See you soon. Bye!

5 A woman is talking to a hotel manager.

What is the woman doing?

F: I just wanted to say thank you so much for organising our trip to the mountains.
Everything was perfect - even the weather was fantastic.
M: Glad you enjoyed it.
F: Yes, my husband and I had the most wonderful day; he even said it was the best
day of his holiday so far! You were so helpful - we really appreciate it.
M: My pleasure.
F: We went to the little restaurant in the village that you booked for us - it was superb.
We'll never forget it.

6 At a hotel, you overhear a tour guide talking to a group of people.

What is the guide doing?

Hello everyone. I hope you had a good night’s sleep. Now, I know we were supposed to
climb up the volcano today, but unfortunately, as you can see, the weather outside is terrible.
The wind and the rain will make the climb quite dangerous, and you won’t be able to see
anything when you get to the top in this weather. So there’s an idea I’d like to run past you.
How about we visit the local market instead? It’s very colourful and it is a good place to pick
up a few bargains. We can try the volcano again another day when the weather is better.

7 At a hotel, you overhear a woman talking on the telephone.

Why is she phoning?

Hi Dad, this hotel is absolutely stunning. It’s the best one I’ve ever stayed in, for sure. It's
even got a swimming pool on the roof! And there are four different restaurants to eat in and
there’s a cinema on the ground floor too. I don’t want to leave! And the view from my room –
oh, it’s breathtaking. I have a huge balcony and can see over the whole city. I’ve never seen
such a view, it’s incredible. I don’t know how to thank you for booking this holiday for me, I'll
never forget it.

8 You hear a sister and brother talking.

What does the girl want her brother to do?

F: Hey, Ben. Do you mind if I ask you a favour?

M: Depends what!
F: You know I'm really short of cash?
M: Well, I haven't got any you can borrow.
F: No, it's not that. Mrs Black next door is away on holiday and she's paid me to clean
her house today before she gets back. But the thing is, my laptop's getting repaired
and I've got to pick it up before 5 this afternoon. It's at the electronics store in town.
Do you think you could get it on your way home from college? It's not far out of your
way. And the cleaning's going to take me ages.
M: OK, I guess so.
