Cambridge English Empower B2 Unit Progress Test 7.

Now look at the instructions for part 1.

You will hear eight short recordings. For each one choose the best answer.

You will hear each recording twice.

1 You hear two students talking about a party

What is the girl doing?

M: So, what about our end of term party?

F: I was thinking we could have it here in the college cafeteria.
M: Mmm, it's big enough.
F: And if the staff don't mind, we could use the kitchen. People could bring pizza and
chicken and things.
M: Yeah, it's always good to have hot food
F: We could have a table with food here, and one with drinks over there. I can imagine
everyone dancing in the middle of the room with a band playing in the corner. We
could have coloured lights round the room, too.
M: Sounds good.
F: And someone could make posters to advertise it.
M: I'll do that. I'll put it on the college website too.
F: Great.

2 You overhear a man talking to his colleague about a meeting he went to.

How much information does the woman get about the meeting?

F: Lewis, how did you get on at that meeting yesterday? Did they like our ideas?
M: Sort of.
F: What do you mean exactly?
M: Well, they said they'd be in touch sometime next week.
F: And did they give you the feeling that they like our plans. Are they going to accept
them?
M: Difficult to say, really. You know how they are - short of money, boss is away on
holiday, going through a difficult period, and so on.
F: So it was a waste of time going, then?

1
M: Yeah, kind of.
F: Lewis, are you tired?
M: Yes, very.
F: I think it's time for you to have a holiday! You know, get out of the city for a few
days.

3 You hear a woman and her husband talking about their kitchen.

What is the man doing?

F: I'm fine with the kitchen as it is.

M: Well, I guess it's OK. But look, we could have that wall taken down to make more
room, couldn't we? Then we could have the cooker and the fridge over there, and
that would give us lots more space here.
F: I can't see why we'd need to do that, though.
M: I can imagine a nice big dining table and chairs just here. It's annoying when we
have to carry our food into the dining room all the time, isn't it? Well, if we made the
kitchen bigger we wouldn't have to do that.
F: Hmm, I see what you mean.

4 You hear two friends talking about restaurants.

What is the man doing?

F: Do you know of any good restaurants in the city centre?

M: What kind of place are you looking for?
F: Sort of American style? Steaks and things. We were thinking of Texas Grill. Have
you been there?
M: Yes, I have. The food's very good, actually. I had a great chicken dish with fries and
so on. But you have to be careful what they bring you. I asked for ordinary tap water
and got expensive bottled water. And my friend ordered an ice-cream - not realising
that there were different sizes - and they just brought her the biggest and most
expensive one.
F: Mmm, there are restaurants that do things like that.

5 You hear an interview with a man called Martin Shaw.

What is Martin doing?

F: I'm standing in this empty space near the city centre with Martin Shaw. Martin, this
area is completely unused at the moment, isn't it?
M: That's right. And it's a pity. In the last few years, food has become more and more
expensive. So people have started to think about growing their own. However, lots
of people don't have gardens so we're going to create one here.
F: That's fantastic. And what are you going to grow?
M: Well, this would make a great place for potatoes and green vegetables. Things like
that.
F: Well, very good luck.
M: Thanks. Come back sometime and see how it's going!

6 You hear two friends talking about a film.

How does the woman feel about the film?

M: So, what was the film like?

F: It was a kind of science fiction thing. You know, space, time travel, visitors from
other planets and so on. I usually find the special effects pretty impressive in this
sort of film, but I didn't with this one. They were probably trying to save money. I
was also looking forward to seeing the actor Brad Olsen in the main role, but his
performance wasn't nearly as good as I'd expected. The story was clever - even
though I'd guessed what was going to happen right from the first scene! But I still
enjoyed it.
M: So would you recommend it?
F: Yeah, it was ok.

7 You hear two friends talking about the man’s new flat.

What is the woman doing?

M: So, this is the living room. And this is the paint I've bought for the walls.
F: Mmm, it's kind of bright, isn't it?
M: Yes, I thought that bright yellow would make the room look, you know, cheerful.
F: Hmm. Yes. I see what you mean. It is very, um, cheerful. It's nice paint, but I was

thinking that maybe something a bit lighter would look good on the walls. Perhaps
some sort of pale yellow. Or maybe cream or something like that?
M: Do you think so? Maybe you're right.

8 You hear a man and woman buying furniture for their apartment.

What is the woman doing?

F: I really like this table, Joe!

M: I'm not sure. It's a bit big, isn't it?
F: Well, that space under the window is huge. I can imagine it there.
M: So, you think that space is big enough?
F: Yes, I do. And those chairs would go with it.
M: Well, they match the table, I suppose.
F: Oh, Joe, I can see it now. We can get our friends to come round and we can have
lovely meals together. Let's get them.
M: OK, you're right.
