Over the past month, we have been showing a ton of new gameplay from

Days Gone – giving more insight into who Deacon is, the state world, and
what it takes to survive within that world

This open-world action-survival game is bringing some tantalizing

new twists to the open-world genre.

Turns out that 20 minutes is barely enough time to scratch the surface of
Days Gone, Bend Studio’s ambitious action-survival epic. This game is deep,
and there is a lot to take in. After my nail-biting gameplay session, I wanted
nothing more than to curl up with it for a weekend to really see what it can
do.

The game takes place two years after a global pandemic has killed almost
everyone, but transformed millions of others into what survivors call
Freakers – mindless, feral creatures, more animal than human but very much
alive and quickly evolving. In the demo you saw two types of Freaks – Newts,
which were adolescents when infected, are opportunistic hunters, preferring
to hit and run from the shadows; and a Horde

This is a brutal world, where everyone and everything is struggling to survive

– but hopefully, the trailer shows that the game is about more than that. It’s
about desperation, hope, transformation, loss, madness, discovery,
friendship, exploration, brotherhood, regret and love.

If there’s one thing the team at Bend is keen to impart about the universe
it’s crafting, it’s the uncompromising, dog-eat-dog nature of things.
“Desperate people do what desperate people need to do to survive,”
creative director Ron Allen explains.

While the rest of 2018 is packed with amazing games ranging from Spider-Man
to Red Dead Redemption 2 to Smash Ultimate, the madness doesn’t stop there.
As we learned at E3, the beginning of 2019 is shaping up to be historically
packed with games, particularly February 22.

The last week of January has Resident Evil 2 coming out on the 25,
and Kingdom Hearts 3 finally getting a release date of January 29. The long-
delayed Crackdown 3 is currently set for sometime in February. But the big day is
February 22, which sees Metro: Exodus, Days Gone, and Anthem. That’s
probably the single biggest day for games since October 27, 2017, which saw
Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus, Super Mario Odyssey, and Assassin’s Creed
Origins.

We'll no doubt get to see more of Days Gone as part of the E3 2018 games lineup next
month, but until then here are the five most important things we learned from today's
reveal
The Enemi Ecosystem

we introduce a new enemy human faction: Rest In Peace, or R.I.P., is a cult

that worships the Freakers. Rippers, as they’re known, dress like Freakers –
and kill anyone who isn’t a Ripper. While they’re important to the story,
Rippers are also an important part of the in-game Freaker ecology:

Wildlife
Whats most interesting about the infection in the world of Days Gone perhaps its that it doesn’t
just infect the humans it infects the animals too, so when we are playing the game we will be
able to face anything from infected wolves to raging bears this will add significantly to the
survival atmospehere of the game

The art of motorcycle maintenance

Your bike is "the best vehicle for the freaker apocalypse" and will be fully customizable.
You can upgrade parts like the muffler (so the freakers won't here you from quite so far
away), the speed and the handling and give your ride a new paint job. Worryingly, it can
also break down, or you can use it altogether. You'll need to keep your bike running
smoothly too, because there'll be motorcycle chases, and you'll get points for doing
stunts.
That bike is fast and responsive, and can weave through narrow pathways
and bridges with ease. Driving requires a certain degree of care and finesse.
Though I was constantly tempted to let loose along the game’s twisting
highways and dirt trails, the threat of collision damage kept me in a cautious
mindset. I didn’t want to find myself implementing a hasty repair job when a
Freaker horde is bearing down!

The bike’s vulnerability adds a palpable measure of tension, and I found

myself keeping a watchful eye on the fuel gauge while traversing the rural
paths of Oregon. You’ll begin with a low-end starter bike. By collecting
resources and cash, and working with a local mechanic, you can transform it
into a proper chopper.
For example, you can upgrade the exhaust system to reduce noise, install a
new engine to boost your maximum speed, or add a heavier frame to absorb
more wear and tear. Then there’s the fuel tank, tires, suspension, storage
space… gearheads will find much to sink their teeth into.

Dynamic weather Weather and time-of-day and mechanics : Snow will

impact your ability to ride the Drifter Bike, cold makes Freakers stronger;
rain can dampen sound, but brings more Freakers out during the day; night
brings out even more Freakers and changes the behaviors of Marauders, and
more.

Another aspect its according the time of day will influence on how
you decide to play the game for example the freakers will become
increasingly hard to deal with as the night approaches and more
freakers mean less humans

In tents action
The open world will feature more metropolitan areas, but it sounds as though building
up encampments will be key to success, and the currency is "camp credits." St John
can communicate with homebase when he's out on the bike too, so expect to be called
back when freakers descend. There'll also be fast travel, which we'd bet our bandanas
will let you zip between the camps. You can also "kind of" choose allegiances, though
we're guessing you can't side with freakers.

Protagonist Deacon St. John has a lot of room to grow, too. As you gain XP by
completing missions and dropping enemies, you can invest skill points into
dozens of abilities across three main skill trees: ranged combat, melee
combat, and survival. Expect to face tough decisions about where to invest
skill points, and when, depending on your preferred play style.

The freaky world

The game never uses the word zombies, they're freakers, so don't make that faux pas
at your next dinner party. They're the result of a global infection, it's everywhere, and
this isn't the sort of game where you're looking for a cure. According to Garvin, the world
probably isn't salvageable. There are playable flashback scenes, so hopefully we'll get a
front row seat to the end of the world.

Speaking of tough decisions! Days Gone is all about emergent events, and
the improbable and entertaining ways they can collide. You might be happily
zipping down a road and run smack-dab into a rope clotheslined across the
road — a trap set by bandits. While you fight them off, you might attract a
nearby horde of Freakers, or a flock of Freaker crows (yep!).

How you handle this confluence of events will be completely up to you. Fight
it out? Toss some molotovs? Hop back on the bike and hightail it out of
there? Once you understand the lay of the land, you can start leveraging
these various dynamics to your advantage. Say, by luring a Freaker horde
into a nearby enemy encampment to wreak havoc, while you snipe away
from a distance.

There is still much we don’t know, though, especially about biker-turned-

survivalist Deacon St. John — specifically, what’s driving his journey. We
don’t know much about the game’s environments outside of the dense
evergreen forests shown in trailers to date, though Bend Studios’
spokespeople have hinted at a number of different biomes.
Then there are the Freakers themselves. We know they’re not dead…
exactly. They live and hunt in groups, sometimes massive ones, and they
use mass grave sites as a readily available food source.
Yet their origins remain cloaked in mystery. A military experiment gone
amuck? A result of a bioweapons attack, or a long-dormant viral contagion?
We don’t yet know, but Bend creative director John Garvin suggested to me
that the game will address some of these questions.

The final fight

Garvin dropped a massive spoiler during his interview, regarding the final boss fight in
the game. So, spoiler alert. Your final battle won't be with a giant freaker, but with a
human.
