TASK 1 (INDIVIDUAL WORK) (a)
In order to give a full and thorough feedbacks to the pupils, teachers will use
letter grading as a way to show pupils’ current achievement. Unfortunately, there are
also some drawbacks of this grading system which are, generalized evaluation and
ranking system amongst the pupils. As a result, students concern themselves with
their rank rather than on learning the material and may seek alternate ways to obtain
high grades. Since "grades do not discourage academic dishonesty," students will
see cheating as a viable option [ CITATION MAM \l 1033 ]. Narrative evaluation is a
type of alternatives grading which can be used to assess the pupils. Based on the
sample of a pupil’s work, I will evaluate using the narrative evaluation method.
Based on the work sample provided, the pupil’s work really needs
improvement. For example, we can say this from the way the pupil didn’t manage to
use punctuations like comma and period correctly throughout the writing exercise
that the pupil has written. The pupil lacked the knowledge to use the punctuations.
Therefore, the pupil can only punctuate with satisfactory accuracy. We can see this
from the missing correct punctuation like commas and periods in the writing
exercise. This is based on the 3.2.3 and 3.2.4 learning standard for writing skills. The
punctuations in the bracketed sentence is the correct way. The punctuation that I
have identified wrong is the one inside the bracket.
Next, another aspect that the pupil can improve in the future is the grammar.
In the exercise, a lot of errors can be found. For instance, “a long Jetty and there
water so blue and clear” has few errors like letter capitalization and article of “the”
should be used instead of there*. Article is a word used to modify a noun, which is a
person, place, object, or idea. Technically, an article is an adjective, which is any
word that modifies a noun. Usually adjectives modify nouns through description, but
articles are used instead to point out or refer to nouns. In this case, “the” is the
definite article but in the pupil’s writing, he/she failed to use the and used “there”
instead. The pupil did make a progress in highlighting and describing the situation
but it is only satisfactory.
After that, the pupil also showed some progress in developing the story and
his/her writing skills. The pupil managed to create an average writing product which
had a main idea and supporting details. This can be seen from the way the pupil
explained that he\she went to the Sipadan Island in Semporna and further
elaborated that the water is blue and clear. Therefore, I can see that the pupil is very
descriptive and elaborated by looking at the sample provided. However, the pupil’s
writing lacked the details necessary for a good story writing. For example, maybe the
pupil can improve on the overall organisation of ideas because judging by the
sample provided, the organisation of ideas is not clear and I have difficulty in finding
the main ideas and supporting details. It is pertinent to keep your ideas organised to
ensure that your main message can be conveyed correctly. Transition words or
phrases are needed in writing to guide the reader through your discussion or
argument.
Then, the pupil also has shown a very good accuracy in the writing itself. The
pupil managed to spell each word in his writing exercise with minimal spelling errors.
Based on the leaning standard of 3.1.1, the pupil was able to reach the performance
level of 5, which is being able to write sentences and paragraphs legibly with a very
good level of accuracy in spelling. It is important to be able to spell correctly because
Learners who feel confident with letters and word patterns are able to read and
comprehend more complex texts. They also have the necessary language tools to
better convey their own ideas through both written and verbal communication
[ CITATION Bec \l 1033 ]. Recent studies also have shown that spelling, reading,
writing and comprehension are all closely linked. A research study conducted by L.C.
Ehri for the Scientific Study of Reading found that spelling instruction improves
reading ability, as it builds a learner’s knowledge of the alphabetic system as it is
used in reading.
Based on the overall performance of the pupil’s writing, I can say that the
pupil managed to write a good story despite the errors that can be found in the
writing, the areas can still be improved in the future. The pupil did a good job in
writing and completing the exercise given. We can only improve our pupils’ level by
assessing them. Because of this, it is safe to say that assessment is a key
component of learning because it helps students learn. When students are able to
see how they are doing in a class, they are able to determine whether or not they
understand course material. Assessment can also help motivate students. If students
know they are doing poorly, they may begin to work harder. Because of this, without
assessment, our pupils will never move forward.
