TEMPLATE FOR COLLEGE ONLINE TEACHING

CLASS CODE: GEC 005

Students (Course/Year Level): BSIS 1st year 2nd Sem

Subject: Mathematics in the Modern World
Number of Students:39
Topic/s: Problem- The use of Venn Diagram in solving problem about sets
Measures of Central Tendency

Lesson 1
1. Introduction: Welcome to NST Online Learning for COVID 19 Quarantine
1.1. Material - latest news about COVID 19, the number of PUIs and PUMs is really
alarming. With the use of Mathematics of the Modern World you can use the knowledge
about the topic in problem solving using the Venn Diagram and Statistics-Measures of
Central Tendency to compute for Mean, Median and Mode. From the data gathering , one
can use his knowledge about Sets and the use of Venn Diagram and the measures of
central tendency.(These topics will be learned for about 3 meetings or more depending on
students understanding)
Review of the Previous Lesson
2.1. Materials - PowerPoint presentations or youtube about the use of Venn diagram
2.2. Questions:
a.What are the types of sets and how are these sets identified
b How do you describe a universal set?, union of sets?, intersection of sets
c.. What do you think is the importance of having knowledge about the sets?
d)What did you learn from the previous lesson?
2. Objectives
Material : Researches and PowerPoint Presentation and textbook
Objective 3.1. To identify a sets
Objective 3.2. To use the Tabular or Roster Method) and Set builder notation in identifying a set
Objective 3.3. To answer the given examples of problems having symbols and convert the sets
into tabular or roster and set builder notation
3. Lesson Presentation- The use of Venn diagram in identifying a set using the intersection
of sets, universal sethe different types of sets or a video clip related to the topicss
and union of sets and solve problems therefrom.
4.1. Motivation - Video presentations about t
4.2. Introduction of the Lesson - Set is a well-defined collection of distinct objects The
collection of persons living in Batangas is a set.and Each person living in Batangas is an
element of the set.
4.3. Discussion - give examples of sets and its elements ( Each student will be called to
give their answers. A set is written in capital letter while an element of sets is enclosed by
brackets separated by comma. Examples are: A={ 1, 3, 5, 7, … , 9007} is the set of odd
counting numbers less than or equal to
9007.,B= {1, 2, 3, … } is the set of all counting numbers.Notice that it has ellipses because the
pattern is obvious and the set is large
Set A={1, 2, 3, 4, 5} is example of identifying the set using the tabular form
Set B={x | x < 6 and x is a counting number} is the set of all counting numbers less than 6 is an
example how to identify a set using the set builder notation. These examples explains a subsets
Set A is a subset of Set B since every element of A is also an element of B
There are different types of sets to name some are: Universal Sets-totality of elements.
union of two sets A and B is the set containing those elements which are elements of A or
elements of B.Intersection of sets

4.Generalization - Venn diagram is used to solve problems about set for easy understanding

5.Assignment
Prepare a Venn Diagram for the following problem.
150 college freshmen were interviewed
85 were registered for a Math class
70 were registered for an English class
50 were registered for both Math and English
a) How many signed up only for a Math Class?
b) How many signed up only for an English Class?
c) How many signed up for Math or English?
d) How many signed up neither for Math nor English?
