Exam II Version “A”

Answer the following questions in the space provided below. Explain your answer. An answer
with no explanation receives no credit.

1. (13 points) The following data show the average monthly utility bills for a random sample of
households in two cities: Baltimore and Philadelphia. The bills include phone, television,
Internet, electricity, and natural gas:

Baltimor Philadelphi
  e a
Sample mean $390.44 $359.52
Sample size 33 36
Population standard
$64 $58
deviation

At 5% level of significance, is there a difference between the average utility bills in these two
cities?

2. (13 points) Economists believe that the 2007-09 recession has affected men more than
women because men are typically employed in industries that have been hit hard by the
recession, such as manufacturing and construction. Women, on the other hand, are typically
employed in services such as health care and education, which are considered more recession
resistant. To check that hypothesis, an economist looked at a random sample of 175 men and a
random sample of 140 women and found that 18 in the first sample and 12 in the second
sample were unemployed. At 1% level of significance, can we conclude that the unemployment
rate for men is higher than the unemployment rate for women?

3. (14 points) The following table shows the results of two random samples that measured the
average number of minutes per charge for AA Lithium-ion (Li-ion) rechargeable batteries and
the Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) rechargeable batteries:

  Li-ion NiMH
Sample mean 96.50 82.90
Sample standard deviation 6.5 11.2
Sample size 14 18

At 1% level of significance, is there a difference in the average number of minutes per charge
between these two battery types? Assume the population variances for the number of minutes
per charge are not equal.

4. (15 points) The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) would like to compare the
average amount of time it takes passengers to pass through airport security at Philadelphia
versus Orlando during peak times. A random sample of 25 travelers in Philadelphia spent an
average of 14.6 minutes to pass through airport security with a sample standard deviation of 5.8
minutes. A random sample of 27 travelers in Orlando spent an average of 11.5 minutes to pass
through airport security with a sample standard deviation of 4.9 minutes. At 5% level of
significance, test the claim that the average time to pass through security in Philadelphia is more
than the average time to pass through security in Orlando. Assume the population variances for
the time through security at these two airports are equal.

5. (15 points) The MCAT is a standardized test used by medical schools in the admissions
process. The scale of this exam ranges from 3 to 45. A new course review for MCAT was
developed by a training company. To test how effective this new course review is, a random
sample of 9 students were taken and their scores before and after taken the course review were
recorded as in the following table:

Student 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
Before 26 21 20 31 18 33 25 23 30
After 28 26 17 34 20 31 26 22 32

At 1% level of significance, test the claim that the average MCAT score is higher for students
after the review course than before the review course.

6. a. (15 points) The owner of a local Domino’s Pizza would like to determine if the average time
it takes to deliver a pizza and return to the store differs among the three drivers who make the
deliveries. The following table shows a random sample of delivery times in minutes for each
driver:

Driver 1 Driver 2 Driver 3

40 16 21
32 9 7
28 13 34
29 22 27
40 17 14

At 5% level of significance, can the manager conclude that there is a difference in the delivery
time among these three drivers?

b. (15 points) If warranted, perform a multiple comparison test to determine which pairs are
different using α= 0.05.
