80 4520 ‐ Printing paste to improve the adhesion on plastics
Application: The Base Coat 80 4520 was developed to increase the adhesion of the decal on
thermoplastic plastics like ABS, PC, PET, PMMA and PVC.
When using this Base Coat certain processing instructions must be observed.
Printing properties: 80 4520 is a ready‐to‐print paste which should be printed with a PET 120‐31
polyester screen as the first layer. It should be accurate registed under the
Xpression print..
80 4520 should be completely dry before continuing printing of the Xpression
colors, 2 C‐Protective Coat and Stripable Coat . Figure 1 clarify the layer
composition of the complete Xpression decal.
Please see also the technical data sheet of the Xpression products and the
Xpression brochure.
The finished Xpression decal can be applied on the substrate as usual.

Drying: With constant ventilation (wicket dryer): approx 2‐3 h
In multi‐shelf dryers (depending on ventilation): 6‐8 h
Application errors: Cold transport or storage conditions may cause that 80 4520 shows precipitation or
becomes completely solide. This process is reversible by heating to 40°C and
stirring. After this procedure 80 4520 will be liquid and homogeneous again.
Even if 80 4520 has been used, the printing of the 2C‐ Protective Coat 80 4512 can
not be avoided in order to ensure the Stripable Coat 80 2039 can be removed.
Before application of the decal the surface of the substrate must be clean by using
a non aggressive cleaner like alcohol or water.
The decals have to be pressed firmly with a rubber squeegee.
In order to ensure that Strippable Coat 80 2039 can be removed from the
decorative decal, the decal must be thoroughly dried. The safest method is to dry
overnight in a ventilated wicket dryer.
Thermal curing: Decals printed with the Base Coat 80 4520 have to be cured at 80°C for approx. 60
min..
After finishing the thermal curing the optimum adhesion has not been achieved. In
fact it will take 14 days before the maximum adhesion can be achieved. After 5
days we measured a cross‐cut adhesion according tor DIN EN ISO 2409 with max. 1
and after 10‐14 days it is 0.
Storage: 80 4520 should be stored in the drums in which it was originally supplied by FERRO
in a dry place at room temperature (15‐25°C). Always seal opened drums carefully
as the composition of the product changes when solvents evaporate from open
drums.
On observance of these storage recommendations we guarantee a minimum shelf‐
life of 2 years in unopened original drums.
Environment: Waste material treatment, environmental health and safety protection has to
follow the local regulations and legislation.
