Elena Can Do It
Each day when she left school, Elena liked to stop and see the
basketball team play.
“Why don’t you play basketball, Elena?” asked her father one day.”
“I have seen you jump. You can be on the team. Why don’t you see Mr.
King?”
“I can’t be on the team,” said Elena. I can’t run fast.”
The next day, Mr. King spoke to Elena. “My team came in last in
the city basketball club, Elena,” he said. “My players can run fast and
dribble the ball. They can pass to the left and to the right. They can turn
and run with the ball. But they can’t get into the hoop!”
Elena looked at the team play. She could see that Mr. King was
right. The players could turn around fast to the left. They could turn
around fast to the right. But they couldn’t make points.
At last Elena spoke up. “I may be a help to the team, Mr. King,”
she said.
“You Elena?” Asked Mr. King.
“I can do it,” said Elena.
“Why not?” said Mr. King. “You have your sneakers on. Get in
there!”
It was scary for Elena to go into the game. But she couldn’t turn
away now. The players looked at Elena. Right away, one boy called out,
“Elena can’t play. Basketball have to run fast. She’s not fast.”
Elena looked at the players. She was very red. “He is right,” she
said. “I can’t run fast, but you can’t make points. I can make shots. Shots
make points. I can help you.”
“Come on team called Mr. King.
Did that teamplay! Dribble, run, pass! Dribble, run, pass! At last a
pass came to Elena. She was the one to jump and put the ball right into
the hoop.
