KEY TAKEAWAYS FOR GETTING
PRESS COVERAGE FOR
YOUR NEXT RELEASE

Aside from great music, the way you present your project is

important.

It's vital to research which specific writers are covering your

specific style of music.

Personal emails are massively more likely to get responses.

Journalists are not able to review every great album they receive,

so you need to reach out to a big enough group to see results.

Start reaching out to journalists plenty in advance of a new

release. 1 month is often sufficient, but 2-3 months is safer.

Be prepared to send physical copies of your music, even if you're

only planning a digital release.

Build long-term relationships with relevant press contacts.

Aside from direct outreach, don't underestimate the power of

reaching journalists via secondary means such as social media,

playlists, personal recommendations and live events.

KEY ADVICE FROM JAZZ
JOURNALISTS AROUND THE WORLD

"Don't be afraid to follow up with the journalist a couple times after you

send your first email. We get a lot of messages. It helps you stand out"

- Sebastien Helary @ Nextbop

"Try not to do mass mailouts as they tend to go largely ignored. The

personal touch works best" - Twisted Soul Music

"Make a personal connection with the writer you hope to review your

music, if you can. Showing an interest in our work makes it much more

likely that we'll take an interest in yours"

- John Bricker / All About Jazz

"Succinct and thorough emails. If you give them everything they need

up front, they'll like & respect that. Make your inquiry a no-hassle

email" - Bird Is The Worm

"Put all the information in the press release - who wrote what, who

plays what, what the title means, where the inspiration came from"

- Patrick Hadfield / On The Beat

"Focus on what makes your music different" - Arts Fuse

"Don't be afraid to write and present your music. I will always find a

time to listen to it. But first please find a little time to look at the

articles I publish and see about what kind of music I usually write"

- Maciej Karlowski / Jazzarium
