MIDDLE DISTANCE -

Aim: To provide students with an array of activities that can be utilized to encourage
active participation and learning in the area of middle distance and distance running.

Equipment: markers, stopwatches and truddle wheel. (measure)

Warm Up: 1) “out the gate” Jump Start, p20 Darren Wensor. (DW)

2) “aerobic immunity tag” Jump Start, p9 (DW)

Activity 1: Discuss the characteristics of a distance runner compared to a


sprinter.
Energy Systems.
Cues – smooth, free flowing, no unnecessary upper body
movement, relaxed arms.
The Starting Commands.
50m run with partner feedback x 2 each.

Activity 2: Parlov relays, what are they and how can they be used?
Breaking the World Record (M, 3.26.0m) (W, 3.50.46)
1) relay with even distribution, 2) relay with choice of distance
from 50 – 150m. how did they compare, advantages and
disadvantages.

Extra-curricular: Fitness Club: could be used during cross-country,


all year round or during athletics season.
The Idea !!!!!!!! 1) To run from Perth to a designated place, eg, Sydney,
Albany or Kalgoorlie. Where you map out all the places
along the way with the distance (km). Each student gets a
log book, a set course is measured around the school
and 3 times a week students run the course and
cumulate mileage.
