Specific actions that citizens in Saudi Arabia can take to conserve energy and reduce

environmental impact

The kingdom of Saudi Arabia is a major gas and oil producing country with a population

of about 25 million people. Notably, the country has a semiarid climate which is characterized by

low rainfall and rapid evapotranspiration which affects vegetal cover (Vincent). The country’s

fortunes as a global energy producer mixed with rapid industrialization and a shift towards

western consumerism is likely to exacerbate the effects of climate change in the country.

Conversely, there is a variety of steps that citizens of Saudi Arabia can take to try and reduce the

environmental impact of climate change.

Creating awareness on climate change

According to research studies conducted in Saudi Arabia on peoples knowledge on

climate change. The study revealed that citizens are aware of climate change and the role that

human activities have on increasing the risk of climate change (Vincent). Through encouraging

and creating awareness on climate change, citizens of the country can hold the government

accountable for national environmental policies. Moreover, the people can change their

consumption patterns to reduce the use of energy.

Efficient use of water resources.

Saudi Arabia relies heavily on desalination plants which are also not environmentally

friendly (Lee). The people of Saudi Arabia should take initiative and reduce the use of water in

agriculture, especially the use of non renewable aquifers. The people of Saudi Arabia should also

collect and reuse wastewater.

Increasing biodiversity and reducing desertification

Saudi Arabia is rapidly undergoing a desertification process, the challenge of biodiversity

can be attributed to the rapid urbanization and use of use of wood for fuel in rural

areas (Vincent). The people of Saudi Arabia should encourage the growth of draught resistant

vegetation that increases biodiversity and reduce the progression of desertification. The citizens

of the country should adopt policies that encourage the protection of crucial ecosystems.
