Wire Rope Slings - Removal criteria

A wire rope sling shall be removed from service if conditions such as the following are
present:

a. missing or illegible sling identification (Each sling shall be marked to show name or
trademark of manufacturer, rated loads for the type(s) of hitch(es) used and the angle
upon which it is based, diameter or size, number of legs, if more than one)
For new sling purchase valid load test certificate of sling should be available.
SWL shall be marked in ferrule or in separate tag.

In case of missing tag, recertify the sling by proof load testing it to twice the SWL.

b. broken wires
i. for strand-laid and single-part slings, 10 randomly distributed broken wires in
one rope lay, or five broken wires in one strand in one rope lay

ii. severe localized abrasion or scraping resulting in a reduction from nominal


diameter of more than 5%,
iii. kinking, crushing, bird caging, or any other damage resulting in damage to the
rope structure

iv. evidence of heat damage
v. end attachments that are cracked, deformed, or worn to the extent that the
strength of the sling is substantially affected

vi. severe corrosion of the rope, end attachments, or fittings
vii. Visible core (in case of fibre core)
viii. other conditions, including visible damage, that cause doubt as to the continued
use of the sling

Synthetic Webbing Sling- Removal criteria
A synthetic webbing sling shall be removed from service if conditions such as the following
are present:
a. missing or illegible sling identification (Each sling shall be marked to show name or
trademark of manufacturer, manufacturer’s code or stock number, rated loads for
the type(s) of hitch(es) used and the angle upon which it is based, type of synthetic
web material, number of legs, if more than one)

In case of missing tag, recertify the sling by proof load testing it to twice the SWL.

b. acid or caustic burns

c. melting or charring of any part of the sling


d. holes, tears, cuts, or snags

e. broken or worn stitching in load bearing splices

f. excessive abrasive wear


g. knots in any part of the sling
h. discoloration and brittle or stiff areas on any part of the sling, which may mean
chemical or ultraviolet/ sunlight damage
i. fittings that are pitted, corroded, cracked, bent, twisted, gouged, or broken
j. Heat burn line on belt/ evidence of heat damage
k. other conditions, including visible damage, that cause doubt as to the continued use
of the sling
