G. Inspection Procedure
Marks:
Identi fi cati on tag is fi xed, in good conditi on and the required marks are clear,
Marking requirements
For single leg sling.
- Conformity mark if applicable, i.e., UKCA or CE marking.
- Sling manufacturers name or symbol.
- Year of manufacture.
- WLL in tonnes (t).
- Identi fi cati on mark.
- Chain Sling grade.
- Number of legs.
For multi -leg sling.
- Conformity mark if applicable, i.e., UKCA or CE marking.
- Sling manufacturers name or symbol.
- Year of manufacture.
- WLL in tonnes (t) and range of angles.
- Identi fi cati on mark.
- Chain sling grade.
- Number of legs.
Check sizes of chain, links, rings, hooks etc. with tables, and make sure that they
are suitable for the Safe Working Load.
Documentati on:
Manufacturer’s instructi ons for use, test certi fi cate, conformity declarati ons and
previous certi fi cate of examinati on is available for review.
Thorough cleaning to be carried out by concerned department or their
contractor.
Chain Legs and links:
Examine for stretch due to overloading or wear. Hang the Sling up and compare
the lengths of the legs in the case of multi -legged slings. Maximum elongati on
due to interlink wear 5% and the max permissible wear in links is 8%.
One leg longer than the others will usually indicate uneven loading in service. If
records are available, compare present length with last recorded length.
Examine for bent or twisted links. They are nearly always associated with a nick
in the side of the link caused by passing round a sharp object. Such a nick would
form a permanent point of weakness.
Examine for cracks, scores, or marks liable to weaken the link.
Examine for pitti ng due to corrosion, whether by rust, or by acid att ack
Pg. 2
Other fi tti ngs
Examine hooks for opening or distorti on, compare opening with values in tables,
if hook of special design compares with drawing. If not available, reference
should be made to original specifi cati on. If hooks are designed to have a safety
latch, these must be fi tt ed and working correctly.
Any deformati on of hooks should result in the hooks being replaced.
Examine rings, pear-shaped links, and other fi tti ngs for distorti on. If repair is
required and not yet all considerable, they should be replaced. It is parti cularly
important that rings should be perfectly circular.
Examine for wear, maximum 8% allowed.
H. Rejection Criteria
Wire rope slings shall be removed from the services if damage such as the following
is visible:
Missing or illegible sling SWL.
Cracks or breaks.
Excessive wear, nicks, or gouges.
Stretched chain links or components.
Max allowable wear for chain diameter 8%.
Max allowable elongati on due to interlink wear is 5%.
Bent, twisted, or deformed chain links or components.
Evidence of heat damage.
Excessive pitti ng or corrosion.
Lack of ability of chain or component to hinge freely.
Weld splatt er.
Bad conditi on of Hooks max allowable wear 8%.
Other conditi ons including visible damage that cause doubt as to the conti nued
use of the sling.
Severe localized abrasion or scraping.
Kinking, Crushing, Bird caging or any damage to the rope structure.
Severe corrosion of the rope, end att achments or fi tti ngs.
Other conditi ons, including visible damage, that cause doubt as to the conti nued
