4 MARKING & DATA PLATES

All units, slings and shackles are to have a unique serial UNIQUE serial No
number traceable to the manufacturer or owner, stamped on
the item, which lasts the life of the item. Any tampering or
altering of this “unique” number is not acceptable and the
agency doing this should be advised that BHPB will not
allow such practice in future for BHPB work.

All previous or irrelevant stencilled, paint or other markings

shall be effectively removed before marking to these BHPB
requirements.
The Tare Weight, SWL, GMW and unit serial number must Stencil Marks Should we stencil to BS-EN Requirements of Metric Tons or Kg to
be marked clearly and large enough for a banks-man/crane save confusion
operator to see at a distance. Marking should be in top right
hand corner of every side and on top of all containers.

Top rails and basket ends (minimum of four areas) are to be Luminous cross-

5 PAD EYES, Lifting eyes, eyebolts
Pad eyes are to be within the boundaries of the container
and (where possible) aligned with the slings to the centre of
the lift. Baskets with top lids are exempt from this
requirement.

Pad eye dimensions must be adequate for loads intended

and hole diameters must be close to shackle bolt diameter
(6%)
Pad eye holes must be machine cut. Flame cut or irregular
shaped, course cut holes are not allowed and must be
replaced.
Padeyes should be made of suitable material, again it is difficult to find
out the material type. But they should be of adequate thickness to
support the load.

Padeyes should not be used when welded Tanks or vessels. These

are not designed for this purpose.
Padeyes must be welded to a suitably strong structure. With adequate
strength to support the load

or other reputable code such as ANSI B30.9. Major sling
repairs or modifications are not permitted.

Slings and shackles must be metal tagged with a unique This is a potential dropped object. The tags are not the problem it’s
identification number, which stays the same for its life and the wire that connect the tag to the rope. On derrick inspection these
stated on all test certificates. Stamping of this number on items are recorded as defective. The item should be hard stampt only.
shackles should be on a non-load bearing part (on edge).

Transit slings used for sustained, regular offshore use must

be destroyed after 2 years and be covered under a
vigorously managed inspection procedure.
Galvanized slings are preferred for regular offshore use of
transit slings.
Just prior to every use or dispatch to rig, personnel must
visually inspect for damage, wear, elongation, kinks, flats,
fraying or broken wires, loose strands, abrasion, bird caging,
rust, corrosion and colour code. Reject and quarantine if any
doubt until approved as safe by a competent person.

Shackles must be the safety anchor bolt type with safety

crane by onshore and offshore personnel.

Chains shall not be used for any load carrying purpose

whatsoever.

6 MAN MADE FIBRE SLINGS

Fibre or man made synthetic flat or round slings shall not be Web Slings have NO testing requirement
used unless with written permission from the SDE, SCE or
Drilling Supt. In such cases only use if you have
documented history of use, care, inspection, testing and
certification.

Only “new” flat slings are permitted, which should be

suitably destroyed after use.
Round slings, suitably protected, certified and regularly
examined can be used more than once, provided they pass
examination before and after each use by a competent
person.

unit. The unit must comply with the IMDG code packaging
requirements for the UN number of the contents.

All containers/vessels for transporting liquids of any type

shall be double skin design or have a crash frame
completely enclosing the container/vessel. In addition any
valves shall be cable tied closed and have a vent system
appropriate for the liquid being transported. Drip trays shall
be placed under any valves or other outlets, an air inlet
valve shall be provided, and guards shall be over any
protrusions where damage to those protrusions could lead to
a spill of the product being transported.

Gas bottles shall be shipped in bottle racks and must be

securely strapped in place. There shall be secondary
fixture(s) to prevent bottles from falling out of the rack in
the event that the straps become damaged. All bottles must
have valve caps installed. Valve manifolds shall not be
permitted.
It should be clear on the outside what the contents of the
tank are and the IMDG code and UN code should be marked
on unit if carrying dangerous goods.

The MSDS must have been reviewed and ready to go with MSDS
the tank.

9 CERTIFICATION
Load test, MPI and TVI certificates must accompany the Test Certificates Actual weight only. You can not estimate any load
units and lifting gear, plus written actual or estimated
weight of the contents of any unit.

Certificates should be in a waterproof plastic pouch, tie- Very easily lost if only tied to unit .Rather with the cargo manifest they
wrapped to the unit. can be supplied to the rig prior to lift

All certificates for TVI (Thorough Visual), MPI and Load Unique numbering of This will only apply if the sling and shackles are specific to the unit as
Testing must have a unique “certificate number” and clearly units and each test slings may be interchange able therefore if the test certs of the rigging
state the unit/sling/shackle unique identification number and certificate gear is attached to the unit cert would this suffice
state where the tests were performed.

Equipment certified outside of Trinidad and imported for

BHPB use, must have a TVI (Thorough Visual Inspection)
by a Trinidad competent person and the existing certificates
stamped and endorsed accordingly.

You must maintain a controlled register of all certification Lifting Register

of units and lifting gear sent to BHPB rigs and/or used
there.

DNV certified units/packages are acceptable with the DNV

standard certification package, but you must hold the full
DNV certification package of the unit, such as to be able to
send the required certification to the rig as above.

Handwritten certificates are acceptable, provided they are Until a typed cert is supplied
on company letterhead, legible, and signed by a person
approved to do so.

10 LOAD OUT CHECKS

Management must nominate someone competent to be
responsible for securing every load out and ensure it is
properly and safely packaged.
Personnel must understand the BHPB CCU/lift gear
checklist and have been properly trained in its purpose and
compliance.

Training must be given on the safe, balanced stowage of

equipment and components into units and the risks
involved.

A risk assessment must be made on any heavy/sharp metal

items that may become loose within the basket, half height
and/or container and fall against the wall and possibly
penetrate the walls.

Sensitive or high value drilling or completion critical

equipment must be protected against the expected
transportation shocks, (road, sea, air) E.g. shock-absorbing
pads on the Galeota road network for BHA,
MWD/LWD/Steering units.

Baskets loads must be packed and balanced properly with a

loading plan aimed at a good Centre of Gravity and
consideration of effects of shock loading.

Ensure that weights of cargo are known beyond any

reasonable doubt.

Checks must be made to ensure there are no hooks, tag lines

or tie down points on open top baskets or boxes, which
could snag up on slings when being lifted and no sharp,
jagged uneven edges.

Ensure the equipment does not protrude higher than the

basket height or excessively outside the unit periphery in an
unsafe manner.
Any long items “sticking out” lengthwise (e.g. completion
make-ups) must be prior risk assessed and protected against
harm to personnel or damage to any threads).
There must be adequate basket drainage holes, confirmed as
being clear.

The CCU or basket should be colour tagged or labelled as Colour code????

being safe, acceptable to the BHPB checklist and ready for
load out for onward shipment to the rig.

11 DROPPED OBJECTS
Checks must be made to ensure no loose items on, in or Prior to lifting
beneath the containers or in any fork lift pockets in the side
base rails that may fall out or become dislodged

All personnel must receive dropped object training or not

allowed to be involved in packaging/load outs due to the
unacceptably high risk involved.
12 SKID MOUNTED PACKAGED UNITS
No drop tests are required.
Skid mounted equipment packages are different to CCU’s. They are classed as the same. CCU's come in 2 main categories,
They are designed and fabricated structures with “in built” Freight containers and Service containers. The same rules apply.
pressure vessels, pumps, pipe-work, valves, flanges, bolting,
seals, gaskets, sensors, instrumentation and other “process”
related equipment. E.g. well test, filtration and CT
packages.

BHPB require you ensure that such packages are fit for their
intended purpose and safe for transportation and lifting in
the spirit of rules herein.

The primary load bearing structure must be designed, Design Review Same requirement as item 1
fabricated, proof tested and periodically examined by a
competent body.

There must be an operating/certification manual including Manual Same requirement as item 1

design, welding, materials, NDT, proof loading, inspection
and testing before use. Thereafter, evidence of regular
periodic examinations by a competent body is necessary.

13 GENERAL ISSUES
Requests for Waivers or Concessions to any of these rules BS 12079 Waiver
herein must be made in adequate time, in writing, to the
BHPB Drilling Supt, with copy to the BHPB QA engineer.
Such requests must make clear why you do not have
compliant material.

There will be a financial penalty for non-compliance and

BHPB Shorebase will maintain a record of any non-
conforming units arriving. All costs incurred for BHPB
obtaining suitable replacement units, if units arrive out-with
the spirit of these rules, shall be back-charged to contractor.

LOLER rules apply to all lifting equipment and lifting

operations as per schedule “K” of the BHPB contract.
Risk assessment - the risks of transporting the loaded unit
and its contents must have been identified, assessed,
documented and controlled.

All personnel must understand the reasons for safe and

efficient CCU and Lifting Gear practices and adequate
training should have been given.

If any exceptional, unusual or heavy lifts (>15 ton) are By BHP definition on heavy lifts a lift of more than 10 ton is considered
envisaged, you must consult an expert rigging and lifting a heavy lift
specialist and the BHPB drilling materials coordinator
before load out to verify rig can handle the unit safely. The
Drilling Supt must approve any heavy lifts.

For any electrical items being loaded out, have must check
for compatibility with the rig electrical power supply and
socket requirements.

14 INSPECTION PRIOR TO USE

Just prior to every use, all users MUST visually inspect All personnel must
units for mis-use, abuse, wear, defects, cracks, loose items, have training on their
dents, impact damage, corrosion, and paintwork and report duties here.
any anomalies.
