1. SCOPE

This procedure defines the requirements for carrying out hardness tests by
means of bench and portable durometers on casting, forging, centrifugal
casting, plate and rolled components. Only if required by Customer the
hardness test shall be carried out on piping welds (first connections and
auxiliary lines).

2. REFERENCE DOCUMENTS
The hardness test shall be performed according with general requirements of
the following standards and the ASTM standard for the specific product and
material:

- ASTM A 370 Std Test Method and Definition for Mechanical Testing of Steel
Products
- ASTM A 956 Std Test Method for Leeb Hardness Testing of Steel Products
- ASTM A 1038 Std test for portable hardness testing by UCI method
- ASTM E 140 Std Hardness Conversion Tables
- ASTM A 833 Std Practice Indentation Hardness Materials by Comparison
Hardness testers
In addition to the above standard, the hardness test shall be performed
according with the specific ASTM for the examined material.

3. RESPONSIBILITY
The hardness test is in charge of QC inspector, with proper experience and
technical knowledge required in order to allow him to perform the inspection in
compliance with the applicable standards. The operator shall have trained
according to the procedures foreseen in the Manufacturer's Instruction
Manuals.
The operator in charge for hardness test shall prepare and issue the certificate
(R-SQ87-A/E) according to job requirements.
Manufacturing team has the responsibility to verify the marking of the rings
supplied by external suppliers.
QC-Documentation is in charge of the review of certificates issued by external
suppliers.

4. APPLICABILITY
This procedure is applicable in the Flowserve – Worthington Srl of Desio (OE
shop and foundry) and Marcianise.

The test shall be carried out for:


- Type 3.1 certification for each heat manufactured according to ASTM standard
(Desio Foundry);
- After any Heat Treatment carried out on casting according the material
specification;
- After localized PWHT on welds or repairs;
- When required by ITP or Customer Specifications.

5. TESTING EQUIPMENT
For the test could be use fixed or portable equipment depending by the type
and shape of the component to be tested.

6. OPERATIVE METHOD

6.1 HARDNESS TEST ON CASTING TEST COUPON (ONLY FOR FOUNDRY)


Test coupon shall be prepared according to ASTM A 370.
QC-foundry is responsible of:
- Management of the sample preparation;
- Performing Hardness test;
- Reporting of the test for the issuing of 3.1 type certificate
The test shall be carried out with fixed instrument (Galileo) with 3 indentations.
The result will be the mean value of the three values obtained.

6.2 HARDNESS TEST ON CASTING


Before carrying out the test, one or more areas shall be prepare for the setup of
the instruments; the casting surface shall be obtained by specific grinding wheel
for the type of materials. The surfaces shall have a accurate finishing as per
par.6.7 of this procedure obtained by flexible sanding disk.
ATTENTION During the preparation of the test areas, operator shall avoid
overheating in order to avoid surface hardening.
With Poldi Type tester (¹) the hardness value will be obtained by the
measurement of the indentation diameter(²).
With Equotip or Alphadur UCI tester at least 4 measurements in the same area
shall be carried out, and the final result shall be the mean value.

6.3 HARDNESS TEST ON MACHINED PARTS


For the machined parts shall be used only Equotip or Alphadur UCI tester, in
order to avoid damage of finished surfaces.
ATTENTION Anyway considering the small marks leave by the spherical test
tip, it’s preferable to perform the test out of the areas requiring very smooth

surfaces (for example bearing housing counterface, probe areas, fit-up areas
with small tolerances)
It’s preferable to perform test on flat surface but it’s possible to test convex or
spherical surface with particular adaptors following the instructions detailed in
the instrument’s manual. At least 4 measurements in the same area shall be
carried out, and the final result shall be the mean value.

6.4 HARDNESS TEST ON ROLLED OR FORGED BARS


Poldi type, Equotip and Alphadur UCI tester can be used and the test shall be
carried out on the ends faces, with distance from the center approximately 2/3
of the diameter.
With Poldi Type tester (1) the hardness value will be obtained by the

measurement of the indentation diameter ( ) (at least 3 measurements).
With Equotip or Alphadur UCI tester at least 4 measurements in the same area
shall be carried out, and the final result shall be the mean value.
ATTENTION The surface shall be smoothed by fine grinding avoiding
overheating.

6.5 HARDNESS TEST ON WELDS


Only when required by the job order, specifications and ITP, the hardness of
piping welds or repairs on casting shall be carried out.
For the test on piping welds the Equotip tester shall be use for thickness greater
than 10 mm while the Alphadur UCI tester shall be use for thickness less than
10 mm. It’s necessary to prepare the surface of the welds to permit the
adequate setting of the probe. The preparation by grinding shall be carried out
carefully maintaining dimension and shape of welds within acceptance criteria
defined in the drawing and specifications. When required by specifications or
ITP, is possible to check the hardness of heat affected zone of welds whit
Alphadur UCI tester.

6.6 HARDNESS TEST ON WEAR RINGS


The hardness test on wear rings can be performed with fixed equipment when
the ring dimension allow the set-up of the component on the bench or
alternatively with Equotip or Alphadur tester, fixing the ring in stable and flat
position. When use Equotip tester, is needed the use of specific couplant in
order to fix the ring in stable position.
With the fixed equipment the indentation shall be done in three position, 120°
with each other. The result is the mean value.
With the portable Equotip and Alphadur UCI tester, at least 4 measurement for
each areas, 120° with each other, shall be done and the mean value will be the
result.

6.7 SURFACE FINISH


For the test of the casting test coupon the surface shall have a finish
conforming requirements of ASTM A370 and recommendations defined in the
instruction manual of hardness test equipment.
For the portable Equotip type and test on machined surface the recommended
surface finish shall be Ra 1.6 µm minimum.

6.8 MATERIAL THICKNESS


The thickness of the test piece shall be considered when selecting the impact
device to be employed. The minimum requirements are defined in the
applicable standards.

(1) The pins for Poldi hardness tester shall be supplied with dimension and
hardness certified according with material characteristic.
(2) Each type of pins shall be supplied with table that shows correspondence
between indentation and hardness value;
The indentation dimensions shall be measured in two opposite diameters (90°
apart). In case of ovalized shape the dimension that shall be considered is the
lower one.

7. HARDNESS SCALE
The choice of hardness scale shall be done according with material type, heat
treatment and applicable ASTM standard.
For the material normally used in Worthington the Hardness Scale frequently
used are HRC and HB.

FIXED EQUIPMENT: the measurements can be in HRC-HRB values and


directly showed by the instrument.
PORTABLE EQUIPMENT POLDI TYPE: the hardness value is with HB scale.
The indentation area is measured with microscope and dimension converted in
HB value with specific table
PORTABLE ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT: it’s possible to convert in different
scales HRC-HRB-HB-HV directly with the instruments.

8. CALIBRATION
Calibration is carried out according with internal procedure PQ 15.

8.1 FIXED EQUIPMENTS


They shall be verified before the use with sample with certified hardness. Every
year le calibration is carried out by external laboratory with Accredia
certification.

8.2 PORTABLE EQUIPMENTS EQUOTIP


They shall be verified before the use with the sample supplied with the
instruments. It’s not necessary periodically calibration unless repair or
maintenance activities.

8.3 PORTABLE EQUIPMENTS POLDI TYPE


For this type of instruments is not foreseen verification before use or
periodically calibration.

9. CERTIFICATION
The hardness values shall be in accordance with job requirements and material
specifications.
It’s possible to convert the values in different scales according with the table in
ASTM E 140.

The certificate shall show the following minimum information:


- Job number
- Component
- Drawing number
- Material type
- Heat number
- Condition or heat treatment
- Instrument type
- Hardness Scale and values required
- Applicable specification
- Hardness value obtained

ONLY FOR WEAR RING: the hardness values shall be permanently marked on
the components in areas that can be visually checked before assembly.
