Course description:

UNAD, faithful to its mission as a leading organization in open and distance education,
exerts an important role related to the globalization issue. Because of this, its
internationalization policy looks forward to guiding the path of the national and
international community towards the bilingual scene.

In view of the above, English 2 is part of the foreign language component established
in the curriculum guidelines of UNAD’s academic programs. Its methodology is
theoretical and practical and has two (2) academic credits by means of which the
students will have to study independently 48 hours and another 48 hours of tutorial
monitoring for a total of 96 hours of academic work. The purpose of the course is:

 Recognize and appropriate the English basic contents.


 Comprehend the foreign language through the different skills: oral
comprehension (audios and written reflection of audiovisual materials) and
written comprehension (composition, interpretation and contents development).
 Encourage students to realize the importance of learning English in labor,
academic and personal contexts.
 Take advantage of technical-didactic resources to learn a foreign language

The strategy used within the course is Task Based Learning, which is focused on
the use of tasks as the central core of the planning and process to lead to language
learning.
The evaluation of this course is going to have 3 moments that involve six activities.
These moments are Initial moment, intermediate moment and the final one.

2. Academic training purpose:

The course´s academic training purpose is:

At the end of the English 2 course, the student will be able to understand the
main ideas in a clear and normal speech about everyday affairs that take place
in different places, besides the about of many radio or television programs
that address current issues of personal or professional interest.

The student will be able to participate spontaneously in a conversation that


addresses issues every day of personal interest or relevant to daily life, links
phrases easily. Besides, the student will be able to understand texts written in
a language of daily use, understand the description of events, feelings, and
desires in personal letters. Additionally, the student is able to write simple
texts and link them on topics that are known or of personal interest.

3. Learning´s outcomes:

At the end of the academic course the student will be able to show:

Learning´s outcomes:1– At the end of the academic course the student will be able
to value the previous skill and knowledge required for the English 2 level, through a
preknowledge online test that allows knowing the amount of learning he/she has
acquired before.

Learning´s outcomes:2– The student will be able to write a text describing


experiences and impressions, using the phrasal verbs, with simple texts and linking
them on topics that are known or of personal interest, which are coherent as well as
cohesive, plus vocabulary words that reflect an intermediate command of English.

Learning´s outcomes:3– The student will be able to understand texts about events,
feelings, and desires and to understand the main idea of audios of many radio or
television programs that address current issues or issues of personal or professional
interest, included in an online test, in a language of habitual and daily use.

Learning´s outcomes:4– The student will be able to describe orally experiences and
facts or dreams, linking phrases with fluency, self-confidence, vocabulary, and
pronunciation in an interview developed with the tutor by skype.

Learning´s outcomes:5– The student will be able to reflect on the process in the
English course, the topics appropriation, and the learning process through an online
test.

Learning´s outcomes:6– The student will be able to understand audios, texts,


reading and apply the vocabulary and structures of the different units of the course
in a final test as the last review of student's knowledge and topics covered
throughout the English course.

4. Learning strategy:

The course´s learning strategic is: learning based on task Task-Based learning
approach.

1. This strategy based on the development of tasks includes the use of the
language in communicative contexts. The student learns the language while
he/she solves a specific task like asking for personal information, the order in
a restaurant, ask for help, talk about a past event, etc.

 3– Task 3: Reading and listening Quiz
 4– Task 4: Speaking task forum and practice session
 5– Task 5: General course review
 6– Task 6: Final exam

Unit 1: Asking and giving relevant information.

At this unit you will study these academic contents:


 Module 1: Asking and verifying information. Conditionals: present factual,
Conditionals: Future factual. Clauses in conditionals.
- Phrasal verbs.
 Module 2: Modal verbs of obligation and necessity. Have to and Must

The activity is a diagnostic test to value the previous skill and knowledge required
for the English 2 level, which allows knowing the amount of learning that a student
has acquired before.

Intermediate moment

Task 2 Writing task forum


It is developed from week 3 to week 8

The activity is a task that consists of the written of a letter describing experiences
and impressions with simple sentences that are coherent as well as cohesive, plus
vocabulary words that reflect an intermediate command of English.

Task 3 Reading and listening Quiz


It is developed from week 4 to week 8

The activity is an online test in which the student will be able to understand texts
about events, feelings, and desires and to understand the main idea of audios of
many radio or television programs that address current issues or issues of personal
or professional interest, included in an online test, in a language of habitual and
daily use.

Task 4 Speaking task forum and practice session – submit activity


It is developed from week 9 to week 12

The activity is a practice task, developed in a forum and through an interview by
skype, in which the student will be able to describe orally experiences and facts or
dreams, linking phrases with fluency, self-confidence, vocabulary, and
pronunciation.

Task 5 General course review


It is developed from week 10 to week 14

The activity is a self-evaluation online quiz in which the student will be able to reflect
the process in the English course, the topics appropriation, and the learning process.

Final moment

Task 6 Final Exam


It is developed from week 10 to week 14

The activities is a Final online exam in which the student will be able to understand
audios, texts, reading and apply the vocabulary and structures of the different units
of the course in a final test as the last review of student's knowledge and topics
covered throughout the English course.

Initial moment evaluation

Task 1: English diagnostic test.

The evaluation standards are (Criterion): Recognizing the topics acquired in the
previous levels necessary to the development of the English 2 course.
The learning evidences are: development of an online quiz of automatic score.

This standard represents 25 points of the activity, corresponds to 5% of the


course´s evaluation
Intermediate moment evaluation:

Task 2: Writing task forum


Agree to learning´s outcomes:2
The evaluation standards are (Criterion): To apply the vocabulary and different
topics according to the course units in a written text.
The learning evidences are: a written task where coherence and cohesion.
Activity higher score: 120 points
Task 3: Reading and listening Quiz
Agree to learning´s outcomes:3
The evaluation standards are (Criterion): To understand texts and audios included in
an online test, in a language of habitual and daily use.
The learning evidences are: an online test of multiple choice.
Activity higher score: 110 points

Task 4: Speaking task forum and practice session – submit activity

The evaluation standards are (Criterion): To interact with the tutor in an interview
by skype and send a video by collaborative forum.
The learning evidences are: an interview by skype and a video by a forum.
Activity higher score: 90 points

Task 5: General course review

The evaluation standards are (Criterion): To reflect on the process in the English
course, the topics appropriation, and the learning process.

The learning evidences are: Automatic online test


Activity higher score: 30 points

The higher score of this evaluation moment corresponds to 70% of the course (350
points).
Final moment evaluation:

Task 6: Final exam

The evaluation standards are (Criterion): To apply the contents of the unit 1 and 2
in the final exam.
The learning evidences are: An online exam.
Activity higher score: 125 points

This standard represents 125 points of the activity, corresponds to 25% of the
course´s evaluation.
