In Bruce Dawe's poem "Beggars Choice," the view of a white Australian colonist on the Aboriginal

community is presented in a mocking and offensive poem. Dawe comments on the unfair treatment

of the Indigenous people by offering perspective into the harmful stigmas and accusations the white

colonists inflicted upon the Indigenous peoples. This is shown through the use of pronouns to

establish a social split between the white colonists and the Indigenous Australians through an "us

versus them" attitude. This stigma is furthered by the aggressive diction and listing. Additionally, the

use of derogatory slang, dehumanisation jargon, a relaxed rhyme scheme and informal register

suggest Dawe is trying to implement form of conversation between the different races, which is

dominated by the white colonist point of view.
