HSFG Bolts

Monday, March 23, 2020 10:31 PM

High Strength Friction Grip Bolts (HSFG) are made of medium carbon steel they are usually of property class
8.8 to 10.9.
These bolts are tightened up to their yield or proof stress which can be taken as 0.70fub.
The tension induced in the bolts causes sufficient friction between the faying faces which help in resisting
and transferring the applied forces.

Advantages
1. Since no slip is permitted in these connections a rigid joint can be achieved.
2. The bolts are not subjected to either shearing or bearing stresses as the load transfer is purely
through friction.
3. These connections can with stand fatigue and dynamic loading much more effectively, as the nuts are
prevented from loosening.
4. Stress concentration at holes is eliminated in connections with HSFG bolts.
5. Due to lesser number of bolts the connection size and the size of gusset plates is reduced.
Disadvantages
1. HSFG bolts are costlier than ordinary bolts.
2. Significant fabrication effort is involved, special procedures are required to ensure clamping action is
achieved.
