However, in late 2014 the price for crude oil dropped below $ 70 per barrel and has not
recovered since. In the same time, prices for the chemical building blocks ethylene and
propylene roughly halved. These prospects made big players such as Braskem and
Dow shelve their bio-based propylene developments. All around the world, times are
hard for bio–materials as they can rarely compete with their fossil counterparts
pricewise and not even score high in the terms of climate potential.
The chemical industry accounts for 30 % of the global energy consumption and is
responsible for 20 % of industrial greenhouse gas emissions. In comparison, the
amount of carbon, that ends in products, is marginal. Consequently energy
consumption is the main area to target if CO2 emissions shall be significantly reduced.
There is consensus in Europe and the US that guidelines on how to switch over to a
bio-based economy need to be stipulated; yet the approaches are quite different
regarding the regulatory strategies and the legislative frameworks.
Made-in-China 2025
What the New Era of Made-in-
China 2025 means for
Petrochemicals and Chemicals
With China pushing into a new era of
industrialisation, chemicals and
petrochemicals are especially
affected. While the size of the sector
is enormous, innovation ability,
efficiency and integration is not quite
often not on-par with the global
competition. Can the ‘Made in China
2025’ herald a new dawn for Asia’s
chemical and petrochemical industry? more...
In 2004, the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) defined twelve value
added chemicals that seemed to be the promising at that time. In the follow-up report of
2016, there was again a list of twelve promising chemicals. The overlap between the
two consists of glycerol, succinic acid and para-xylene.
The European Union too, strives to identify chemicals that can be made from biomass.
'RoadToBio' is a EU-funded project to deliver a roadmap, illustrating the ‘sweet spots’
for the chemical industry. In a first step, a list with 120 chemicals was compiled that
show the market potential. In parallel, the value chains of 500 petrochemicals were
analyzed from a technical point of view. 85 % of the value chains offer entry points to
replace a petrochemical by a bio-based product. Most often cited as replacable are
ethylene, propylene and methanol.
A typical product tree starts from a low value feedstock like ethylene and branches into
many higher value intermediates like polyethylene, ethylene oxide and vinyl acetate.
The intermediates again have multiple uses; vinyl acetate can end up in an adhesive
as well as in paint.
The world market for dicarboxylic acid is around 50,000 tons/year. However, the
projected market is large and thus, production plants are set up worldwide. Succinity,
Bio Amber, Myriant and Reverdia are building production capacities of more than
400,000 metric per year, based on organisms such as B. succiniproducens, E. coli and
S. cerevisiae.
The companies count on succinic acid to become a platform chemical, opening up a
much broader product range than just specialty chemicals. Hydrogenation of succinic
acid to 1,4-butanediol and tetrahydrofuran could access another combined 2.4 million
tons per year.
Virent has developed a hybrid biochemical and thermochemical process that converts
biomass into a mixture of hydrocarbons. This can be treated just like petroleum-derived
material. A 100 % plant-based bottle was showcased in Milan in 2015. Commercial
production, however, is expected before 2021.
Apart from that, the sugar alcohol has more than 1,500 other uses. The petrochemical
production route for glycerol starts from propene but plays only a minor role. The
market is dominated by bio-based glycerol as a byproduct of biodiesel production. For
this, vegetable oil is trans–esterified with an alcohol, with one ton of glycerol produced
for every ten tons of biodiesel.
With a yearly production of about 2 million tons, the market is saturated, resulting in
stable and historically low prices. Industry is therefore looking for ways to add value to
glycerol. Use as a substrate for fermentation processes such as succinic acid, citric
acid, 1,3-propanediol or biogas are in part commercially proven.

05/26/2014 - Oil as a natural
resource is becoming scarcer and
more expensive and there is a need
to look at eco-friendly ways of
extracting it, thereby reducing CO2
One of the communalities of the four chemicals discussed above is that they are drop-
in chemical, which are chemically identical to their fossil counterparts. Thus, it doesn’t
play a role whether they are made from petroleum or from biomass for further
processing.
