Chemistry Alternate Assignments GT

The following are descriptions of alternate assignments that can be completed to demonstrate your
knowledge of the different content standards. With each activity is a list of the assignments that points can
be added to if the activity is completed appropriately and accurately.

These activities should be completed at home and turned in to me by Monday January 9, 2016.
Students should use their graded papers 1-13, the links that are on the lesson tiles on Engrade, and can borrow
an old textbook if they wish as resources.

How does Heat affect matter? (Ball and Ring)

Illustrate and label what happened to the motion and arrangement of the particles in our ball when heat was
added to it and then when the ball was cooled in water.

Changes of State Graph (Phase Changes)

Choose a substance other than water and find its melting and boiling points. Sketch the phase change graph of
that substance. On the graph label the 3 states of matter and 2 phase changes.

Elements and Atoms (Brave the Elements)

Choose an element other than hydrogen and helium. Draw and label the atomic structure (protons, neutrons,
electrons) of that element.

Periodic Table (It’s Elementary, Using the Periodic Table)

Choose 10 different elements. Create a display that gives the following information for each: symbol, atomic
number, atomic mass, # of protons, # of neutrons, group #, and period #). Some examples of displays are a
poster, brochure, chart, foldable)

Properties of Elements (Metals and Non-Metals, To React of Not to React)

Choose 5 metals and 5 non-metals. Create a display that gives the following information for each: identify as
metal or non-metal and how reactive the element is. Also, in a short answer response explain how the
properties of a metal are different from the properties of a non-metal.
