1.0 INTRODUCTION
Everyone agrees not enough is being done to encourage people to read. Those who can read
don’t realize how lucky they are, having in mind that almost 20% of world population is still
illiterate. Sometimes, a little reminder can do wonders to make someone put away the computer
and reach for the e-reader or a printed book. We list most beautiful wonder-making artworks
below. You’ll find here enigmatic pictograms, minimalist illustrations, visualized book quotes,
as well as wonderful 20th century vintage images. Such posters are not only suitable for
classrooms or public libraries. The big challenge for people today is not simply getting others to
read – but rather it's getting them to enjoy it too. It's one thing for people to trudge through set
texts in a lesson, but will they open another book when they get home at the end of the day?

It is a disappointment that people read books less often in these days of widespread technological
reliance. Books were the primary source of intellectual entertainment just a hundred years ago,
but with the invention of radio, television, cinematography, and most recently, the Internet and
computer games, it seems that reading books is no longer a popular leisure activity. However, we
believe that books are an irreplaceable part of our lives, and the role that masterfully-written
books play in the personal growth and development of a particular person throughout one’s life
is a remarkable one. Books directly expand our consciousness of how we live and where we live,
enrich our power to express ourselves, and supply us with inspiration in a way that other
mediums cannot compete with.

2.0 ABOUT OUR BOOK CLUB

Let's talk about the book club. If you're like me, a shy former English student, you might
avoid joining a book club because it feels like a class but the participants are served with foods
and drinks. Do you think it's better to sit at home wearing your pajamas and having coffee?

Do not worry!! There is now ‘The Silverittes Book Club’ which is a Perlis Book Club
organization for all of the book readers in Perlis could come and hangout and get to know as well
as discuss about what book they like. Naswadi Tapa dan Lailey Noraimee started the club in
2015, with just 5 friends, but this year they started a whole country book club. As our members
come from all over the state we want to add ways to connect with everyone in a way that makes
SBLE 2113 English Proficiency II

us feel closer. We also love to read and notice that our members regularly review or recommend
books. We see an interest in talking about books like this in our community. So we created a
platform for them to come and meet and express their feeling about books.

2.1 Questionaire
1. ‘The Silverittes Book Club’ is essentially a community of popular hobbies.
What made us want to create this book club?
As our members come from all over the state or even the neighbouring states, we
want to add ways to connect with everyone in a way that makes us feel closer. We
also love to read and notice that our members regularly review or recommend
books related to letters. We see an interest in talking about books like this in our
community. So we created a platform for them.

2. What are the plans for managing this club? What does a book club do?
We created the Silverittes Book Club that had a forum for every book we read.
We also broadcast live discussions from our studio using Google On Air where
our members can watch them through Google or videos posted on our website.
Just like virtual meetings, we want to give our members an opportunity to
participate if they are physically unable to attend. It's one of our ways to get
everyone involved. In this way, we hope we can reach everyone in Perlis as well
as the whole country.

3. What are the benefits of joining a book club over a other clubs?
Similar to other club meetings, we want to give our members an opportunity to
participate physically. It's one of our ways to engage everyone. In this way, we
hope we can reach everyone in the country and not just in Perlis.

4. How do we handle discussions?

We use hashatag (#Silverittesbookclub) to select questions and comments on
Twitter and Instagram. We also use a plugin called ChatWing and have long been
a book club event on our website. So check out our website:
(Silverittesbookclub.blogspot.com.my).

5. What do we eat and drink when a book club meeting takes place?
For now, we are eating local cuisines with cookies. We also drank tea and coffee
and maybe some soft drinks.

6. What made us choose No. 84, Jalan Bukit Lagi as our first book club
location?
To be honest, it is the only place in Kangar, that is both easy to access as well as
it's in the middle of Kangar. Easy to spot and have access to a mall, parking place
and a petrol station. Not to mention a bank.

7. What do we expect from our book club's first discussion and discussions?
We can't wait to see what happens. This is the first time we have created a book
club and of course we will learn a lot. We are also excited to talk with our
members. It's fun to talk about something you like. We are also interested in
seeing different aspects of stories that other people love and spend most of their
time with.

8. What is our advice for those who want to enlist in our book club?
Plan your book club ahead of time. We planned two months in advance to give
our members and ourselves the opportunity to include this book club table and
give them a chance to read the book in advance. Also choose a theme that
interests you because otherwise you will have difficulty choosing the right book.
Lastly, make sure you enjoy it as this is the main reason why you get together
with your friends!

3.0 CONCLUSION
In addition, books enrich our vocabulary, introduce us to new notions, and offer a wider
choice of words to us. With every book we read, we become more intelligent. Even reading one
seemingly more primitive pulp fiction book per month can enrich one’s personal vocabulary with
SBLE 2113 English Proficiency II

dozens of new words, help us build more concise sentences on our own, and express oneself
better, make one’s speech more intelligent and sophisticated. Watching certain TV programs and
documentary films can also widen one’s vocabulary, but hardly as effectively as books do, since
reading operates with both more sophisticated visual and audio (if reading aloud) receptors.
Moreover, our imagination reproduces mental pictures of what we are reading about, so a new
word automatically links to a certain image and a particular feeling that it relates to. Therefore,
reading books is a wonderful tool when it comes to learning and developing one’s vocabulary at
any age.

Books are a fantastic source of inspiration. Unlike fine art, architecture, or travelling, books help
us create our own mental illustration for what we read on paper. In a way, books make us all
artists and creators of our own mental cartoons, movies, or illustration collections. Every image
we create ourselves is automatically allotted a certain emotion, whether a simple or a more
complicated one. Every mental image that a written word projects is vibrant with feelings and
emotions. This is what makes books powerful and memorable. Books are an endless source of
inspiration and motivation to become a better person. That's why book clubs are created in the
first place, as a place for us book lover to meet and express.
