Coles Down Down AD

What is the instrumentation in this jingle?

At the beginning of the video it is rock so there is electric guitars and lots of drums. When
the lady walks in it turns into a pop song. There is still drums and electric guitar, but more
layers of music and rhythm. You can also hear trumpets.

What is the main hook in this jingle? If it is in words, write it, and if it has pitch describe it
(e.g, has 3 pitches and goes up, down, then back up).

The main hook is the “Down, down, prices are down” It is kind of high pitched like when the
lady is singing in comparison to the instruments.

3What is the rhythm of an important ‘hook’ in this jingle? (e.g., “Oh what a feeling,
Toyota”.)

The hook is the “Down, Down, prices are down.” part and it repeats. Down down is said fast,
and then slows in prices are down.

Notate this rhythm neatly using traditional notation in your music book OR use graphical
notation to represent the rhythm on staff paper. If using traditional notation, choose a
time signature, use the correct number of beats in each measure and demonstrate correct
bar line placement. If using graphic notation, choose graphics that clearly show how the
rhythm is heard. The graphic notation is in book.

4. Comment on the use of pitch in this jingle. Is there much variation? Is it mostly high or
low pitched?

As mentioned above, the female singer has a very clear and strong voice which was high
pitched throughout most of the ad but her voice goes down and up quickly again. At the
start there is a vocal run.

6. What background music or sound effects are used in this commercial?

The background music used in this are the couple talking while she’s singing, and also some
background singers harmonising with the singer.

7. Write down the lyrics or tagline of this jingle.

“Saving money is never annoying,”
“Down, down, prices are down.”
8. How do each of the musical elements you have identified (instrumentation, hook, rhythm,
pitch, tone colour, background music/sound effects, lyrics and/or tagline) relate to the
commercial product being advertised?

The lyrics “down down, prices are down” is coles’ hook. It represents the low prices in their
products. The background music is the sounds, which is the people talking about the low
prices. The tone colour is bright so that the audience can clearly take the fact that their
“prices are down” from the ad. Instruments like trumpets and drums usually add the bright
part of tone colour to this ad. The rhythm is upbeat and quick, and the pitch goes up and
down so it isn’t boring.

9. Who do you think the target audience for this product is? Explain your answer.
I think the target audience for this product is families. I believe this because the phrase
“Prices are down” is for the parents wanting to spend less money and the song is fun,
catchy, rhythmic, and upbeat so it drags attention to both types of viewers.
