VERNIER CALIPERS

1/10 mm Vernier Calipers:

The sensitivity of the vernier caliper as shown above is 0.1 mm

To find the sensitivity;

As shown in the schematic “9 mm length on the ruler” is divided into “10 parts on the
vernier”. Then, each interval on the vernier is 0.9 mm.

sensitivity = 1 − 0.9 = 0.1 mm

6.8 mm

The sensitivity of the vernier caliper is also 0.1 mm. This time, “49 mm length on the ruler” is
divided into “10 parts on the vernier”. Then;

sensitivity = 5 − 49/10 = 0.1 mm

1/20 mm Vernier Calipers:

The sensitivity of the vernier caliper as shown above is 0.05 mm

To find the sensitivity;

As shown in the schematic “19 mm length on the ruler” is divided into “20 parts on the
vernier”. Then, each interval on the vernier is 19/20 mm.

sensitivity = 1 − 19/20 = 0.05 mm

12.25 mm

The sensitivity of the vernier caliper is also 0.05 mm. This time, “39 mm length on the ruler”
is divided into “20 parts on the vernier”. Then;
sensitivity = 2 − 39/20 = 0.05 mm

1/50 mm Vernier Calipers:

The sensitivity of the vernier caliper as shown above is 0.02 mm

To find the sensitivity;

As shown in the schematic “49 mm length on the ruler” is divided into “50 parts on the
vernier”. Then, each interval on the vernier is 49/50 mm.

sensitivity = 1 − 49/50 = 0.02 mm

MICROMETERS
i) Perform the measurement shown in the figure. 2i) Find
the measuring range and the sensitivity of this vernier
micrometer and find the pitch of the screw (it means that
the displacement on the sleeve for one rotation of the
thimble of the micrometer). Also, specify how to
represent 96.796 mm length on this vernier micrometer by
drawing a figure. Explain that is it possible or not to
represent 77.7655 mm and 52.589 mm lengths using this
micrometer in detailed.

Solution:

i)
88.500 mm + 0.340 mm + 0.006 mm = 88.846 mm

2i)
Measuring range => 75 – 100 mm
The sensitivity => “0.09 mm length on thimble is divided into “10 parts on vernier”. Then,
each interval on vernier is 0.009 mm. The sensitivity is 0.01 mm − 0.009 mm = 0.001 mm
Pitch => If the thimble is rotated once, it moves “0.5 mm” on the sleeve. Then the sensitivity
is 0.5 mm.
96.500 mm + 0.290 mm + 0.006 mm = 96.796 mm

77.7655 mm cannot be represented by this micrometer because of the poor sensitivity.

52.589 mm cannot be represented by this micrometer because of the unsuitable measuring
range.

i) Perform the measurement shown in the figure. 2i) Find

the measuring range and the sensitivity of this vernier
micrometer and find the pitch of the screw (it means that
the displacement on the sleeve for one rotation of the
thimble of the micrometer). Also, specify how to
represent 06.646 mm length on this vernier micrometer by
drawing a figure. Explain that is it possible or not to
represent 07.7655 mm and 26.464 mm lengths using this
micrometer in detailed.

Solution:

i)
18.500 mm + 0.140 mm + 0.006 mm = 88.646 mm

2i)
Measuring range => 0 – 25 mm
Then the sensitivity
is 0.5 mm.

96.5 mm + 0.29 mm + 0.006 mm = 96.796 mm

07.7655 mm cannot be represented by this micrometer because of the poor sensitivity.
26.464 mm cannot be represented by this micrometer because of the unsuitable measuring
range.
