Micrometer Caliper

Objectives:

At the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

• Identify the different parts of a micrometer and

their function.
• Read the different least counts of micrometer.
Micrometer Caliper

A micrometer is a precision
instrument used to
measure a job. It is the
most commonly used
measuring instrument when
accuracy is required.
Micrometer used to take
the outside measurements
are know as outside
micrometer.

Main Parts of Outside Micrometer
Frame: The U-shaped FRAME
holds all the micrometer
parts together. The FRAME is
made of drop forge steel or
malleable cast iron. All other
part of the micrometer are
attached to this.
Main Parts of Outside Micrometer

Anvil: The anvil is the fixed

measuring face attached
to the one end of the
frame. It is made of alloy
steel and finished to a
perfectly flat surface.
Main Parts of Outside Micrometer
Spindle: One end of the
spindle is the measuring
face. The other end is
threaded and passes through
a nut. The threaded
mechanism allows for the
forward and backward
movement of the spindle.
Main Parts of Outside Micrometer

Barrel/Sleeve: The barrel or

sleeve is fix to the frame.
The datum line and
graduation are marked on
this.
Main Parts of Outside Micrometer

Thimble: On the beveled

surface of the thimble
also, graduation is marked.
The spindle is attached to
this.
Main Parts of Outside Micrometer

Ratchet stop: The ratchet

stop ensures a uniform
pressure between the
measuring surface.
Main Parts of Outside Micrometer

Lock clamp/Lock nut: The

spindle lock nut is used to
lock the spindle at a
desired position.
Care of a Micrometer
Everyone should be impressed with the fact that
any instrument capable of measuring to within .001
inch to 0.01 millimetre must be treated with great
deal of care and not abused, otherwise its accuracy
will be damaged. The following points should be
kept in mind when using micrometers.
Care of a Micrometer
1. Never drop a Micrometer; always place it down gently in
a clean place.

Do not spin the micrometer.

Care of a Micrometer

2. Never place tools or other materials on a Micrometer.

3. Never lay a Micrometer in steel chips or grinding dust;

never handle it with oily hands.

4. Never attempt to use Micrometer on a moving work.

Care of a Micrometer
5. Keep the Micrometer clean and accurately adjusted.
Clean the Anvil and Spindle of the micrometer.
Use only lint free paper to wipe the measuring
faces.
Care of a Micrometer
6. After use, wipe dirt and fingerprints from the micrometer
with a soft, dry cloth.
Care of a Micrometer
7. The following points should be kept in mind when storing
the micrometers.
o Do not expose the micrometer to direct sunlight.
o Do not place the micrometer directly on the floor.
o Store the micrometer in a dust free environment.
Graduation of Micrometer
Working principle:

The micrometer works on the 0.5 mm

principle of screw and nut .The 5

longitudinal movement of the

0
0

spindle during one rotation is

45
0.5
mm

equal to the pitch of the screw.

The movement of the spindle to 1.0 mm

the distance of the pitch or its 0 5

fractions can be accurately 0

45

measured on the barrel and

thimble.
