Sophia Anzalone

Block 2
Music Technology Project

Rationale/Description:
This project is centered around learning the ukulele, which fifth grade has begun
learning. Thus far, they have learned the chords C, F, Am and G. During my first week, I was
able to witness their learning of these chords, helping students along the way. This was very
similar to my experiences with JMUke. That being said, to aid their learning of this instrument, I
think it would be beneficial for them to learn these chords in the context of a song they know,
JMUke-style. Regarding assessment, I will take note of how students are handling the ukulele
(proper technique), their ability to play the chords correctly, and how confidently they can sing
while playing. They will not be graded on this, but their participation is required and encouraged.
Students who actively participate may be asked to lead a song as an incentive. It is my hope that
this is a fun activity that the students look forward to each class, channeling their inner rockstar
and singing their favorite songs!

Goals:
1. I can play C, D, F, G, and Am on ukulele (HGI.4)
2. I can demonstrate proper ukulele technique (HGI.9)
3. I can sing or hum while playing ukulele (HG.3)

Method:
● Review C, D, F, G, and Am with the students at the beginning of each class
○ Practice transitioning from chord to chord
○ Explore/teach strumming patterns
■ Teacher demonstration/students copy, if necessary
● Jam session
○ Lead students through one song on slideshow each class
■ Begin with shorter songs
● Have half the class sing, and half play
○ Switch
■ Advance to longer songs as the lessons progress
■ Encourage students to hum along if they are not able to sing and play
