As second semester rolls around, so does the cold and flu season. Recently on campus,
there has been a scare due to the norovirus. Naturally, students are wondering how they can help
prevent from getting ill. Anne M. Mitchell, FPN - Director of Health Services, sent out an email
letting students, faculty, and staff know that the Rhode Island Department of Health had reported
an increase of norovirus outbreaks throughout the state. Norovirus is a highly contagious viral
illness that causes acute gastroenteritis, known more commonly as a stomach bug.
In the email, Mitchell advised students to wash hands regularly, not prepare foods while
sick, and to clean and wipe down commonly-touched surfaces with products containing bleach.
After talking with students, they have their own ideas of how to keep themselves from getting
sick during the winter season.
Kristen Lepore, Class of 2020, said that “Getting enough rest and trying not to stress
helps students from getting rundown and eventually sick.” Lepore also stated, “If you are starting
to feel rundown, drink lots of fluids - it helps.”
Also, from the Class of 2020, Ian Wallace says that “Keeping a clean living space is a
way to keep bacteria from spreading.”
Although students have their own ideas and skills to keep from becoming ill, it is also
important to hear from the health experts. Sandra Egan, RN said, “Trying not to touch your face
is a crucial part of staying healthy. It makes it easier to get infected from germs.” It is smart keep
up clean and healthy habits stop from contracting illness.
Getting sick is no fun for anyone, it is important to remember if you are feeling ill, stay
home from class and keep your germs to yourself. The norovirus has made its way onto campus,
with the first report coming in on Wednesday, Feb. 1. If you start to feel rundown or are
experiencing any symptoms of norovirus, which include: nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, contact
health services to get help and stop the spreading of germs and illness.

On Wednesday, April 12, 2017, the Community Partnerships Center at Roger Williams
University will be holding its largest event of the academic year, the Community Engagement
Celebration. This event happens every two years. The event is being held at the newly completed
Water Fire Arts Center (475 Valley Street, Providence, RI) from 5–7p.m. This will be the second
event held in the new space.
During the event, over 100 projects led by Roger Williams students will be on exhibit.
The point of this event is to celebrate the hard work of Roger Williams students and the impact
they have had with the community in and around the Providence area.
Jim Ziolkowski, the keynote speaker for the event, will be speaking about his own
stories. He will be telling his story of transforming communities and lives. Ziolkowski is the
CEO of buildOn. Ziolkowski’s goal is to break the cycle of poverty, illiteracy and low
expectations through service and education. Inspired by his own travels to some of the most
impoverished countries in the world and his experiences living in Harlem, Ziolkowski derailed
his fast-track career in corporate finance at GE to dedicate his life to buildOn.
Ziolkowski will be available during the event for questions on his story, as well as the
other students and faculty members who worked on the community engagement projects for the
local area.
I will be in touch when more information about the Community Engagement Celebration
arises and will make time for an interview. If you have any questions, feel free to email me at
