The artist is in his workshop. He is sitting on a stool with his back to the viewer. He is studying his reflection in a
mirror and is painting it on a canvas. He is smoking a pipe. He is holding a paintbrush in his right hand and a palette
in his left hand. There may be different colours of paint on his palette but he seems to be painting in black ink. The
canvas is propped up on an easel. Four other self-portraits of illustrious painters are pinned on the canvas and an
old style helmet is placed on top of the easel. Other *props include a glass of Coke, a metal bucket, and brushes

Les 3 titres sont possibles pour ce tableau. Ce qui est important c’est comment tu justifies ton choix. Si tu as choisi ‘Triple
self-portrait’, tu pouvais dire par exemple :

Unité 10 – Piste 07

We can call this painting a triple self-portrait because there are three representations of Norman Rockwell by
himself: one is his reflection in the mirror, one is the drawing on the canvas and the third one is the artist ‘for real’
that we see from the back.

Exercice 8–B
Voici un exemple de ce que tu aurais pu dire :

Unité 10 – Piste 08

The Rockwell that can be seen in the mirror shows a common and somewhat unattractive face. His glasses are fogged
and seem to indicate that he can’t actually see what he looks like. Yet this may be the way he actually perceives himself.

On the other hand, the drawing on the canvas shows a more outgoing, confident and friendly face. It is an
illustration of what he could want to look like.

By contrasting these different representations of himself, Rockwell raises the problem of the sincerity of the
autobiography. Of the three characters represented, which is the “true”? The one who is seen from behind and who
is painting is no more true than the others, since it is also the work of Norman Rockwell.

With a sense of humor, the artist may want to show us an impossible self-portrait.

Exercice 10
1- There can be some Coke.
2- The pipe tells us that Rockwell may be a smoker.
3- There could have been a fire in Rockwell’s workshop 17 years before.
4- Rockwell might have been a fireman when he was younger.
5- They could be self-portraits of Rockwell’s masters or favourite painters, or they could be his favourite portraits.

Exercice 11
1- Norman Rockwell must have been one of the best illustrators of his time.
2- He may have chosen to be a painter by chance.
3- He must have traveled a lot.
4- He can’t have been conceited.
5- He may have bought the helmet in an antique shop

I think that the person is British because of the English stamps in the saucer, and also because of the Hurricanes.
The hip bone makes me think of a hip operation. So this person could be quite old. Moreover we know that this
person was living during World War II.

The pencils in the mug, the notebook, the paper clips and the paper knife make me think of someone who writes a
lot. He could be a writer or a journalist.

He may have been a pilot because he keeps two model planes on his desk.

The model planes could mean that he was a pilot in the RAF during World War II.

Maybe he kept a desert rose on his desk because he visited exotic countries and traveled through deserts.

Hello, my dear friend. You must wonder why my hip bone is sitting on my desk! I’m sure you don’t have any bone on
your desk! Anyway, let me tell you why. As you know, I am getting old and I seemed to have problems with my hip.
I couldn’t fly a Hurricane these days, mind you! So, my doctor decided to have me operated on. I was feeling quite
anxious about it, but everything went well and I came home safely after the operation. A few days later, I received a
parcel. I wondered who it was from. It was from the surgeon who had operated on my hip. And you know what, inside
the parcel was this beautiful hip bone, with a message from my surgeon: “This is the biggest hip bone I have ever
seen! Wishing you all the best with the new one!”.

Now you know why this bone is decorating my desk! I thought it was a funny sort of trophy! What about you? What
object have you got on your desk which reminds you of an important event of your life? I love stories, you know, so

8- It is Roald Dahl.

At St Peter’s, Sunday morning was letter-writing time. At nine o’clock the whole school had to go to their desks
and spend one hour writing a letter home to their parents. At ten-fifteen we put on our caps and coats and formed
up outside the school in a long crocodile and marched a couple of miles down into Weston-super-Mare for church,
and we didn’t get back until lunchtime. Church-going never became a habit with me. Letter-writing did.
From that very first Sunday at St Peter’s until the day my mother died thirty-two years later, I wrote to her once
a week, sometimes more often, whenever I was away from home. I wrote to her every week from St Peter’s
(I had to), and every week from my next school, Repton, and every week from Dar es Salaam in East Africa,
where I went on my first job after leaving school, and then every week during the war from Kenya and Iraq and
Egypt when I was flying with the RAF.

My first question is: Imagine you are me in 1960 when I painted this Triple Self-Portrait. I was 66 at that time. How
would you have chosen to draw yourself on the canvas? Can you justify your choice?

My second question is: You have already seen a lot of paintings. Where does a painter usually write his signature?
Where is my signature on my Triple Self-Portrait?

My third and last question is: What is the object in the painting which transformed the vision I had of myself?

I wish you good luck with your painting. Last time, you chose a prop from my painting. This time, as a farewell gift,
here is a book. It will probably give you a hint about Question 3. Bye-bye!

Exemples de réponses possibles :

Answer to Question 1: I would have chosen to represent myself as I really am because a portrait as close as
possible to reality seems more interesting to me than a distorted image.

Answer to Question 2: Traditionally a signature is put in one of the bottom corners, most often the bottom
right-hand corner. Your signature is in the bottom right-hand corner.
