The Sufi Shrine of Ajmer,

Paperback - 128 pages,

by Laxmi Dhaul.

Description : Often, when one visits an important or popular religious shrine or holy place in India, the mass of
people, the heat, the dust the traffic and congestion overwhelm one. Invariably beggars and the poor get after you,
and in the confusion and rush, one misses out on the spiritual and historical significance of the place. Often what
started out as a pilgrimage, becomes an uncomfortable experience if done without some knowledge and background.

This book, is also dedicated to those who visit the Dargah for the first time and have heard about it but have no way
of knowing about its significant and salient features. The daily rituals, the customs and what happens in the Urs (the
death anniversary of the Saint) are therefore written about in great detail. I have also endeavoured a chapter on
Sufism, to give an introduction on the Islamic Mysticism prevalent at the time and to describe the main tenets of the
Chishti group of Sufis.

One of the nicest times to visit the Dargah is in the evening, when the decorative lights are lit up and the Qawwali
singers (mystical sufi poetry) are in place bringing life to the place. The traffic is less, and the ambience reminds you
of the presence of the great Sufi Saint. I have been fortunate enough to attend an Urs, and was lucky to be taken
along with the mass of devotees right up inside the Sanctum Sanctorum, through the 'Gates of Paradise' and brought
out again. My only effort was not to resist the surge and flow of humanity that took me right in and brought me right
out, again with the grace of Khwaja Gharib Nawaz, may Allah be pleased with him.

From Back Of The Book:

Hadrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti's tomb lies in Ajmer in Rajasthan. He was one of the greatest Sufi saints and
his Dargah (shrine) is a centre of pilgrimage for thousands of people of all faiths. The Dargah complex is a
conglomeration of various buildings. Places of worship and tombs of various people built over the last 750 years
revealing the spiritual and historic importance of the place. Various Sufi rituals. The annual Urs and daily ceremonies
held at the Dargah are a fascinating mix of different customs. The patronage of the Mughal. Rajput and Maratha
emperors and kings have added tremendous variety and colour to the shrine as it is today. This book though based
on the life of a Saint of the thirteenth century is extremely relevant even today for it deals with mysticism. Love.
Unity, sacrifice, spirituality and secularism. The Saint's preachings are vibrant, even today, as they strengthen the
fabric of love and unity amongst diverse faiths.

Laxmi Dhaul became interested in the Sufi saint of Ajmer through her personal experiences. She went to Ajmer for
the first time in 1992. And subsequently she sent her three children to study at Mayo College, in Ajmer. Her interest
and fascination for the Dargah grew during each visit she made to her children and to pay homage to the great saint.
Miracles and prayers answered are a feature of the Ajmer Dargah and this alone attracts thousands of devotees
daily.

Details:  Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti : Social and Educational Relevance,
*Hardback - iv + 122 pages,
by K.D. Khan.

Product description :

Roots of an everlasting impact of devotion lie in the lifestyle and teachings of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, May Allah
be pleased with him, through himself and his representative disciples.

Although there has been a spate of publications on his life and mission, both by Indian and foreign writers, yet there
is a dearth of documents that throw light on the contribution and teachings of this great Holy Saint towards modern
Education in general and contemporary youth in particular. An attempt is made through this publication to fill up this
gap.

In addition, the book provides details about the life of Khwaja Sahib as commonly accepted by Sufi scholars inspite of
some basic controversies. For a better understanding to a common reader, the Religious terminology is also added as
an Appendix to the book.

Khwaja Mo'inuddin Chishti [RadiAllahu anhu]on Sama:

"Some people say that samaa' [listening to the music of the Sufis] is the way of
attaining the Divine presence, that through this the lover attains completeness in
love and gets totally lost in the Beloved, but this is wrong about love. The truth is
this, that through Sufi music one attains double union because, on account of it, the
heart dwells in the purity of love, the head in contemplation, the soul in union, the
body in service, the eyes in sight and the ears begin to hear the voice of the Friend.

Samaa' [listening to Sufi music] is of two kinds, one with relationship, the other
without relationship. If you hear the music as coming from the qawwal (musician),
then you hear something from the unseen world, but when you hear the music
coming from Almighty, that is being in the Divine presence.

Sufi music is like the sun from which everything is acquired according to the
capacity of obtaining and according to the degree of attainment and no one remains
empty-handed. Sufi music is of God, but some of its parts are useless and improper.
The temperament of the beginner is in no way capable of hearing the inspirations
from Almighty.
Junayd Baghdadi[Rehmatullahi alaih] has said: 'I have seen a darwish who on
entering the musical gathering sat down and passed away. That is the Real hearing
of Sufi music'

Life & Work of Khawaja Ghareeb Nawaz

This book contains the complete life biography of this great saint ( wali-Allah), who was the reviver of the Chistiya
tariqah. Also contains the mystical teachings and well known utterrances ( malfoozat) of Khawaja Sahib, may Allah be
pleased with him.

Also includes brief details of Khawaja Muin al-Dins' may Allah be pleased with him, contemporaries, his successors,
prominent followers as well as his impact and legacy on Muslims and non-Muslims.

Dr Zahurul Hassan Sharib, rahmatullahi 'alayh, was born at Muradabad, Uttar Pradesh, Northern India on Jan 9th
1914. He was the janasheen  (appointed successor) of the Gudri Shahi  Order of Chishti Sufis in the 1970's.

He passed away in hospital in Jaipur, Rajasthan on April 9th 1996. His grave lies near the Chilla of Khawaja Muin al-
Din Hasan Chishti, Radi Allahu ta'ala anhu, in Ajmer, Rajasthan, India.

Words of Wisdom & Profound Teachings from the Founder of the Chishtiya Sufi Order :

Hazrat Khawaja Muinuddin Hasan Chishti, may Allah be pleased with him, was a friend of the poor, the depressed,
the deprived and the destitute. His spirit of humanism sets him apart from the considerations of caste, colour and
community. His meditations give an authoritative insight into the things that really matter and, it is hoped, will secure
for the individual concerned the inner peace and harmony which are sought by man in his bondage. Also includes a
brief account of the life and message of Khawaja Uthman Harooni - the spiritual guide of Khawaja Muin al-Din
Chishti, may Allah be pleased with them both.
'' It is through love that fana
(annihilation of the self) is achieved.
The one who has become
the lover of Allah
Is absorbed in Allah
and also lost in Allah.
The one who is so united with Allah
becomes a mirror of Allah.''

Extract from the Preface :

'' I hope and I believe and I trust that this book will be useful to all those who are willing and prepared to make their
life noble, beautiful and sublime. It is a subjective study, based on the published and unpublished books, discourses,
and the maktubat (letters) of Khawaja Muin al-Din Hasan Chishti, may Allah be pleased with him. His premier caliph
and successor, Khawaja Qutubuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki, wrote the 'Dalil al-Arafin' which contains the dscourses of his
spiritual guide. This book has its own relevance as it belongs to the primary sources. ---

"This book - The Sufi Saints of the Indian Subcontinent - is a short biographical sketch of sufiya'-e-kiram  (the
generous mystics) of the Indian subcontinent.

If we want falaah wa behbood (success and well-being) here, in this faani (perishable) world and in the aakhirat  (the
next world, life after death) which isbaqa'e-davam (everlastingness), the teachings of these sufi's will be very useful
because these saints have left a lasting legacy that will guide the people today and in future."
