ANSWER:
1. here are 3 perspectives that are used to explain the reasons for studying DA,
including Academic, Pragmatic, and Pedagogical Reasons.
a) The academic reason is that by studying DA students can know and understand
the function of language in social life. This study directs students to the
exploration and investigation of texts and talks used socially.
b) The pragmatic reason is that by studying DA, students can not only learn language
structurally, they can also learn language functionally. In other words, students
need to be taught not only the form of language such as pronunciation,
vocabulary, and grammar, but also the function of language learned how to
convey the purpose of using some typical expressions according to the context
c) The pedagogical reason is clearly related to pedagogic, for example the world of
schools. This is very useful for teaching staff in understanding language through
DA. Therefore, information about language use obtained from discourse analysis
has been an inspiration for teachers and practitioners of the language they use as a
reference source for formulating curriculum, designing syllabus, preparing
teaching materials, and for determining the methodology of language teaching.
2. Who should learn DA? Learning DA is not easy, therefore the level of education
unit that is expected to easily learn DA is predetermined. Levels suitable for
studying DA are students at the higher levels of tertiary education, such as final
semester students who have learned and have knowledge of English language skills
and language studies. Knowledge of language skills refers to the skills of speaking
and listening, writing and reading, as well as interpreting and translating. On the
other hand, knowledge of language studies refers to linguistics (eg phonetics and
phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics).
3. What should students do in learning DA?
In learning DA, students must first have 2 skills. Namely Language skills that refer
to the skills of speaking and listening, writing and reading, as well as interpreting
and translating as well as knowledge of language study skills referring to linguistics
(eg phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics). In this, students can
re-evaluate themselves in the rules of the use of language that has been used. The
things that students will do in studying DA include learning the theoretical concepts
of discourse analysis and conducting certain discourse analyzes. From this, students
are expected to take advantage of studying the subject.
4. Benefits that can be obtained in studying DA include:
a.Studying DA, students can gain knowledge of discourse analysis. This means that
by studying DA, students are able to know DA concepts as well as develop their
skills in making a discourse analysis.
b. Studying DA, students can develop a critical mindset.
c.Studying DA, students can understand clearly about the concept of using a
language. not only contribute to the results associated with discourse analysis, but
also use the results according to their communication needs.
d. Get inspired to learn Language.
5. What should be taught and learned in a foreign language? Foreign languages, for
example, English is a language that can be a connector between us and other people,
by studying language to become a medium to convey our ideas. What should be
learned in the delivery of a language is not only knowing its structure, but also its
function in that language. or how we can use language in the right circumstances.
6. The benefits that can be obtained from studying DA from a pragmatic perspective
are students can use language in the correct context or situation. To communicate
effectively in a foreign language, a speaker must have two types of knowledge
(structural and functional knowledge). They are very important to be used in social
interactions to avoid pragmatic difficulties (the inability to produce sentences in
accordance with the use of language in its context) which can cause failure and conflict
in communication.
7. How to use DA in a pedagogic context? English teachers not only need to teach
students how to shape language, but also need to teach how to function languages in
actual social interactions. To teach the function of language, teachers must bring
discourse analysis information into the pedagogical system of teaching and learning
foreign languages. the emphasis on teaching foreign languages is to provide
communication through functional syllabus by utilizing the integration of four
language skills with the help of student-oriented classes, authentic texts and the
application of communicative testing principles to teaching.
