Question 1 Using your calculator

The following dataset contains ages of 10 randomly selected students in a Judo school in
Brisbane. Answer the questions that follow.

11, 18, 15, 25, 16, 12, 32, 24, 28, 14

(a) Using Excel or the STAT function in your calculator, compute the mean and standard
deviation. (No working required for this part.)
(b) Find the median, and compare the mean and median to determine the skewness of the
dataset.
(c) Calculate the coefficient of variation.
(d) Locate the first quartile (Q1), third quartile (Q3) using the common sense method.
(e) Calculate the range and inter-quartile range for the dataset.
(f) Suppose the age of oldest in the sample (32) was incorrectly entered. If the correct age was
82, construct a table and comment on how would the correction affect the mean, median,
range and inter-quartile range?

Question 2 Exam scores

The datafile: Exam Scores.xls on the B/b unit site contains a sample of the final exam scores of a
statistics course. By using appropriate statistics, construct a box-plot and a histogram and
comment on the distribution of the exam results. In your discussion, you should consider the
central location, dispersion and skewness of the data.

(You can sketch the box-plot by hand or with excel.)
