ORIENTATION
The Princess Diaries: Mia Goes Fourth is a 2002 American young adult novel written
by Meg Cabot and published by Macmillan Children’s Books. The novel is the forth volume
of the The Princess Diaries series. This book tells us the story of Amelia (Mia) Thermopolis
when her life changes drastically when she found out that she is a princess. This book
specifically talk about Mia’s love life.

INTERPRETATIVE RECOUNT
Amelia "Mia" Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi was once an ordinary teenage girl
living in Greenwich, New York City, with her single mom and a cat. Until one day, her dad
came to visit and revealed a very big news: that she is the Princess of Genovia. She was only
14, and was very overwhelmed; she got to keep it a secret because no one would believe that
she is a princess, with her nerdy appereance.

Mia does not adjust to this news easily; but she objects when her father informs her
she must now move to Genovia to learn to be a princess. Mia and her father then agreed that
she will take the throne as long as she is allowed to finish high school in New York. Lilly, her
best friend, notice something was up. But Mia insisted on not telling her the truth. This leads
to their tense fight. Mia, who didn’t had any other friend, always spill out her story in her
diaries.
By the end of the day, everyone in her school, including Lilly, and her crush Michael
(also Lilly’s brother) knew the news. At first, they’re all very sceptical, but then, they can see
that Mia could became a good princess.
After months of the princess training with her grandmother, Grandmere, she is finally
ready to take the crown and rule Genovia. With all of her dinners with the world leaders and
trying to take control of her country, she and her ex-crush, now boyfriend, Michael, got a
little distant. Also, she believes that Michael is seeing another girl, presumed a surfer, and
this makes Mia uncomfortable and anxious. She feels like she doesn’t have any talent to be
proud of.

Eventually, Mia can finally go on a date with Michael. The presumed surfer girl never
existed, and Michael ensures her that she is the only one for him. Mia got super happy and
takes her time to write in her diaries for a very long time. She then realizes, that perhaps,
writing is her best gift and talent. She thinks that she might write a novel.

EVALUATION
I can truly say I really enjoy my time following Mia’s story. First of all, Meg Cabot is
a great writer. She effortlessly makes it easy to understand and funny. She’s good at making
simple but catchy sentences. Beside that, I also love the Mia Thermopolis character. Her
personality is so strong; quirky, anxious, naive, and just so relatable with teenage girls. By
the end of her journey we can clearly tell that she gained a lot of confidence in herself,
teaching us to accept and love all of our ‘flaws’. Also, the idea of this whole ‘secret princess’
itself is already interesting, and the way how the story flows makes the readers even more
curious.

CONCLUSION
Overall, The Princess Diaries: Mia Goes Fourth is an entertaining and worth-reading
book. The plot with all those romance and friendships is so realistic. This book won’t make
you bored, even the story itself is quite simple. Mia Thermopolis will impressed you with all
of her kindness and quirkiness. I recommend this book to those who is looking for an
interesting but easy-to-read novel.
