Princess Diaries

It is the year 2001 a book titled Princess Diaries that is written by Meg Cabot was adapted into a movie.
The narrative follows Mia Thermopolis, a seemingly ordinary high school student, on her journey to
becoming a royal princess of Genovia, a small European nation. Mia Thermopolis, a socially awkward
teen from Manhattan, is the protagonist of the story. She was raised by a single mother named Helen
Thermopolis, and she usually leads a solitary existence, unseen to anyone except Helen her mother, her
best friend Lily, and Lily's elder brother Michael who secretly harbors feelings for her. For Mia, simply
going to High School without throwing up is challenging. In her first month in high school, she has
already failed her algebra class, and to make matters worse, her mother is dating her algebra teacher.
Helen, Mia's mother, gave her a diary to help her express her frustrations and process her feelings upon
learning that Mia struggles to express herself and tends to bury her emotions when they arise. Every
day, Mia records her life as a teen living in Manhattan in her diary. Her diary writings reveal the truth
about her personal struggles with her mother and algebra, her fantasy of dating the attractive senior
Josh Richter, and her intense fear of humiliation.

One day, her mother informed her that her grandmother was visiting from Europe and that she should
go to her grandma's house to meet her. The size of her grandmother's home astonished Mia, who
assumed her grandma must be wealthy without considering the possibility that she might be royalty.
She was welcomed to a cup of tea with her grandmother Clarisse, who informed her about her late
father Philippe and how he was the crown prince of Genovia. The realization that she is the only heir to
Genovia and will one day rule as its ruler took Mia some time to process. Mia was so shocked by the
news that she hastily left and rushed home to tell her mother, who informed her that she and her father
had agreed to keep it a secret in order to protect Mia. Mia initially objected, but Helen persuaded her to
go to her grandmother's "princess lessons" on the condition that she could make up her mind at the
Genovian Independence Day Ball, which was to take place in three weeks.

Mia’s life has taken a new path, along with princess lessons she also received a complete makeover from
a famous hairdresser named Paolo. Her bushy eyebrows were thinned, her hair was straightened, and
contact lenses were used in place of her glasses. She also received a limousine chauffeured by Joe,
the queen's head of security and confidante, who becomes a father figure to her. Mia’s
transformation causes her schoolmates to treat her differently, while her busy schedule strained
her relationship with her best friend Lily. To appease her best friend, Mia tells Lilly the truth and
swears her to secrecy. However, the public quickly learns that Mia is a princess when Paolo, the
hairstylist who gave her a makeover, sells the information to the media which causes the
paparazzi to start chasing her vehemently. The queen admits that she found Mia's
awkwardness endearing despite the fact that she made a fool of herself at the first state dinner.
She advises that they spend quality time together, canceling their lessons for the following
afternoon. Clarisse explains to her as they get to know one another that although Mia's parents
were in love, they decided to separate amicably so that they could each follow their own
interests. Philippe stayed in Genovia to become the King, and Helen moved back to America
with Mia so that she might have a "normal" childhood.
Josh Mia’s secret crush extends an invitation to Mia to come and join him at a beach party as
she becomes increasingly popular. Mia agrees, neglecting Lilly and abandoning her plans with
Michael as a result. Lana helps the paparazzi in taking pictures of Mia when she is only wearing
a towel, while Josh kisses Mia in front of the cameras to increase his own celebrity. The next
day, both of these pictures appear in the newspaper. Clarisse reprimands Mia for her actions
since she thinks the pictures are unsuitable for a princess, and Mia, feeling ashamed, vows to
relinquish her title. Joe indicates that the queen responded too severely by reminding Clarisse
that Mia is still a teenager and her grandchild.
After making amends with Lilly, Mia finally stands up to Lana for bullying a schoolmate. Mia
invites both Lilly and Michael to the ball but Michael declines, still heartbroken over Mia's initial
dismissal. After Clarisse apologizes to Mia for scolding her, she states that Mia must publicly
renounce the throne at the ball. Terrified by the prospect, Mia plans to run away until she
discovers a touching letter from her late father and relents. Mia's car malfunctions while driving
to the ball, stranding her in a downpour until she is retrieved by Joe.
When they finally arrive, Mia, still wet and untidy from the rain, accepts her role as Princess of
Genovia while Clarisse, Helen, and Lilly look on proudly. After changing into a gown, Mia
accompanies Clarisse into the ballroom where Michael, who has accepted Mia's apology, invites
her to dance before proceeding to the courtyard, where they confess their feelings for each
other and share their first kiss. In the final scene, Mia is shown traveling to Genovia in a private
plane with her pet cat Fat Louie and writes in her diary that she plans to relocate to Genovia
with her mother.
