2008–2010 CBR1000RR/RA Warranty Extension

For Crankshaft - Abnormal Primary Drive Gear Noise

Under a certain type of usage, severe or abrupt
clutch engagement can transmit shock loads
that may deform the crankshaft primary drive-
gear teeth, causing them to generate abnormal
engine noise.
Although this abnormal noise does not affect
the performance or reliability of the engine,
revised crankshaft and clutch components are
now available to repair engines affected by
abnormal crankshaft primary drive-gear noise.
To ensure customer satisfaction, American
Honda is extending the Warranty on all 2008–
2010 model year CBR1000RR/RA motorcycles to
five (5) years from the original purchase date for
abnormal crankshaft primary drive-gear noise.
This warranty extension only applies to units
that exhibit the noise as defined in the SYMP-
TOM VERIFICATION section of this bulletin. Any
other type of engine noise or condition is
excluded from this warranty extension.
CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION
American Honda is sending a letter to owners of
2008–2010 CBR1000RR/RA motorcycles inform-
ing them that the warranty on their motorcycle
has been extended to five (5) years from the
original purchase date for abnormal crankshaft
primary drive-gear noise. No other conditions
are covered by this warranty extension. For
your reference a copy of the Customer Letter is
reproduced on page 6 of this Service Bulletin.

DEALER INVENTORY
For all units in your inventory, print a copy of
the Customer Letter (page 6) and file it in the
deal jacket. Present the Customer Letter to the
customer at the time of sale.
SYMPTOM VERIFICATION
VERIFYING THE ABNORMAL NOISE
Note: All motorcycle engines emit some nor-
mal mechanical noise. The abnormal crankshaft
primary drive gear noise in question is very pro-
nounced and most noticeable at idle speed
when the transmission is in neutral.
Use the following procedure to verify abnormal
primary drive-gear noise.
1. Warm the engine to normal operating
temperature.
2. With the engine idling, put the transmission
into first gear while holding the front brake
on.

the engine noise when the engine is loaded
and unloaded.
• If the engine noise does not change signifi-
cantly when the engine is loaded and
unloaded, the crankshaft primary drive-
gear is OK.
• If abnormal engine noise lessens or goes
away when the engine is loaded, continue
to TAKING A VIDEO.
TAKING A VIDEO
Using a digital camera only (no phones), record
a 15–30 second video of the affected motorcycle
by following these instructions.
Video Sample
1. With the engine idling and the transmission
in neutral, take a video starting with the VIN
sticker on the left side of the frame. Continue
recording and quickly move to the right side
of the bike and point the camera at the
clutch actuation lever on the right engine
cover. Have a helper put the transmission in
first gear and then slowly let out the clutch
lever to load the engine (without stalling it)
as shown in the Video Sample. Do this two
more times. Stop the recording shortly after
the third loading of the engine.
Copy the video from the camera to a com-
puter that is connected to the internet.
Rename the video file with the unit VIN.
2. E-mail your video to AHM TechLine as
follows:
• Type your dealer number, unit VIN and
mileage, and CBR#7 into the subject line of
your e-mail.
• Attach the video file (15 MB maximum) to
the e-mail and send it to:
mcdealersup@ahm.honda.com
• Make sure to include the name of your
dealership contact person in the e-mail.
3. TechLine will acknowledge your E-mail and
review the video within 24 hours (weekdays)

of receiving your e-mail. There is no need to
call TechLine before submitting your video.
• Call TechLine if you don’t receive a
response within 48 hours.
REPAIR VERIFICATION
Before you begin the repair procedure, check if
the repair has already been performed on the
unit. Repaired units can be identified by the
clutch lifter lever on the right crankcase cover.
See the IDENTIFICATION section of this Service
Bulletin for details.
If the unit has been previously repaired and
exhibits an abnormal primary drive gear noise
call TechLine at: (800) 421-1900, option 9.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
UPDATING THE CRANKSHAFT
Using the procedures in the Service Manual,
replace the crankshaft with the one in the appro-
priate parts kit for the unit model year.
Note the following when replacing the
crankshaft:
• Before engine removal, drain the coolant
into a clean container and save it for re-use
after engine installation.
• During crankcase disassembly, loosely
install three M6 x 35 mm bolts into the
clutch pressure plate as shown and
remove the clutch pack as a set. This will
speed clutch reassembly.

• It is not necessary to remove the cylinder
head or cylinders during this repair proce-
dure.
• Select the correct main journal bearings
and crankpin bearings using the proce-
dures in the Service Manual. Bearings are
not included in the parts kit for this bulletin.

UPDATING THE CLUTCH
1. Remove the three setting bolts (M6 x 35)
from the clutch disc assembly.

disc assembly.
Make sure to assemble the remainder of the
clutch with the updated clutch springs from
this bulletin. Pay close attention to the direc-
tion of bevels as shown.

NOTE: Main journal and crankpin bearings are not included in the Crankshaft Set. Follow these
steps to ensure a timely repair:
1. Order the correct Crankshaft Set for the affected unit model year.
2. When the parts kit arrives, record the main journal and crankpin O.D. codes from the new crankshaft.
Record the crankcase bearing support I.D. codes and connecting rod I.D. codes from the affected
unit. Using the bearing selection tables in the Service Manual, select the new main journal and crank-

WARRANTY EXTENSION NOTICE (related to abnormal crankshaft noise)

Dear CBR1000RR/RA Owner:

What is the reason for this notice?

American Honda Motor Co., Inc. is extending the warranty on 2008-2010 CBR1000RR/RA motorcycles for an
additional four (4) years over the original 12 month warranty period for abnormal crankshaft primary drive-gear noise.
If your motorcycle is affected, this noise emits from the lower right side of the engine (clutch area). Any other engine
noise or conditions are excluded from this warranty extension.

Note: All motorcycle engines emit a certain amount of normal mechanical noise. Abnormal crankshaft primary drive-
gear noise is most noticeable at idle speed when the transmission is in neutral. This abnormal noise is the result of a
certain type of usage, as described below.

What is the problem?

Only a small percentage of owners will experience this problem. Under a certain type of usage, severe or abrupt
clutch engagement can transmit shock loads that may deform the crankshaft primary drive-gear teeth. A deformed
crankshaft primary drive-gear will generate abnormal engine noise. Although this condition does not affect the
performance or reliability of the engine, revised crankshaft and clutch components are now available to repair engines
affected by abnormal crankshaft primary drive-gear noise.

What should you do?

If your motorcycle operates normally, and has normal engine noise, no action is necessary. However, if you feel your
CBR1000RR/RA has an unusual noise coming from the lower right side of the engine (clutch area), and your
motorcycle is within the extended warranty time period, take your motorcycle to an authorized Honda motorcycle
dealer, who will then determine if the noise falls within the terms of this warranty extension.

What if the dealer determines the abnormal noise falls within the terms of this warranty extension?
To ensure customer satisfaction, American Honda will advise the dealer to replace the crankshaft, certain clutch
components, and associated service parts in the engine of your motorcycle. This repair will be completed free of
charge for a period of five (5) years from the date the vehicle was sold to the first retail purchaser.
