LESSON TOPIC: Earth’s Four Interior Layers

Lesson
Goals: Student will need to understand the interior layers of
Earth’s surface in order to learn about tectonic plates,
Pangea, and how the Earth was formed.

LEARNING Students will be able to identify the different layers of

OBJECTIVES the Earth. Outline the characteristics of each of Earth's layers
: and create a model of the layers of the Earth.

TEKS: 6.1(A), 6.2(A), (C); 6.3(B), (C), (D),; 6.4(A), (B)

Build a model to illustrate the structural layers of Earth,
including the inner core, outer core, mantle, crust,
asthenosphere, and lithosphere.

ACADEMIC Crust, mantle, lithosphere, asthenosphere, core,

LANGUAGE: magnetosphere

MINI- Beginning of lesson: As a group, we will all review with a

LESSON: worksheet about the four layers of Earth. This will be a short
review from the previous day. The worksheets goes into
greater detail about each layer and informative aspects to
them. We will annotate the text to gain a better understanding
of what we are reading and answering. The worksheet comes
with a short 5 question quiz that we will do as a group.

MAIN
ACTIVITY: Students will be creating the Earth’s interior layers using
construction paper individually. I will have a completed model
for the students to reference when doing this project. I will
have pre-cut circles of construction paper for the students to
use. The students will be responsible for determining which
circle is what layer, writing in their own description (can be
found in the book or their worksheet and facts of each layer
and making a complete model. The students will also need to
add the continents on the outer layer themselves using the
model provided for them.

CLOSING:
Students will present their completed Earth (with the layers) to
the class. Each student in the audience will be expected to ask
one question to the presenter for participation credit.

ASSESSMENT: Check for understanding: What do you expect the conditions

would be at the Earth’s core? What kinds of materials would be
found?

Each student that is presenting will be expected to fluently

answer questions from their audience (peers). The student will
be able to answer what conditions are at the Earth’s core and
what types of materials would be found.

MODIFICATIONS: -one on one

-emphasizing important words and phrases
-modeling and demonstrating what is expected of the students’
project
-some pre-cut construction paper for their project
-extended time
-simplified written and verbal instructions
-small class setting (classroom only has 5 students)
CONNECTIO I will integrate English Language arts by group reading our
N TO OTHER handout on Earth’s Four Interior layers. We will highlight,
SUBJECTS underline important information from the text. We will be
reviewing vocabulary from Monday’s class.

MATERIALS Printed handouts, sheets of construction paper cut out into

: circles, and continents, brass paper fasteners, glue sticks,
textbooks and interactive notebooks

TECHNOLOGY: No technology will be used for this lesson day.
